heappyday:

I'm facing the same issue currently. But, I have tried treat it as a numbers game. You win some, you lose some. I discovered grad school coordinators are more apt to reply promptly compared to faculty members. And the higher their rank, the lesser the chance they'll get back to you. I e-mailed 6 of them, only one Prof replied me consistently. Others went blank. Though I started during the summer break.

- It may be that the profs are not currently accepting new students
- Or that they got your mail, are interested in replying, but just plainly forgot to do so!
- Or they may feel you've not understood their research interests enough for them to pay attention to you, and reply you
- Or your mails just got dumped in the spam folder, since they are cold emails

Whatever it may be, I've discovered that most are situations completely outside our control.

This worked for me though. A sample of the first email I sent.

Subject: I'm highly interested in (your request) in your (Prof's field) lab

Prof's Name:

Hello Sir/Ma,

My name is XXXX, and I have completed SO SO SO degree from XYZ school.

I'm highly interested in joining your research lab focused on developing and optimizing cutting-edge approaches to delivering drugs and genes in humans for better living conditions.

I'm currently working at AAA (briefly explain your profile here, and how you think you'll be beneficial to him/her).

I completed my BSc with a (GPA), and (your brief achievements, one line at most).

I'm passionate about SO SO , and would love to (what you want to know/ask) + (Indicate a sense of urgency to show seriousness).

Thanks for your anticipated and favourable response.

No response.

So, I sent the same email four days after, also on a week day, with a Re: I'm highly interested in (your request) in your (Prof's field) lab subject, and started with this note.

Hello Prof ABC,

Hope you're doing great? Just sending you a gentle reminder on the request for contact for research studies at ABC.

[Former email]

Closing: I'm sure you must be really busy, and I don't want to seem interrupting.

Hope you can find a few minutes on this. I appreciate your reply.

Regards.

Alert! I got a reply that same day, and she's been responding since then.

Are Professors are address as Dr. Or Prof. When mailing.... Because I use Dr. Everytime.....
Anyone is fine but preferably Dr. What i have noticed here is that any faculty lecturing is a prof whether associate or assistant unlike Nigeria where you get your PH.d first then you become a reader then later a prof. Additionally i saw your post about mailing faculties. Its not easy i must tell you, i am sure you have not sent as much emails as i sent then. The number of emails i sent this year alone is more than the total i have sent since i opened my email account in 2005. In summary, don't give up. some will reply some wont. Some might want to reply but forgot. You can send a reminder after 48hrs, that's the rule here, also you can use your discretion and send a reminder after 4 days. Some people do say don't attach transcript and resume to the first email but i noticed that's what some faculties are looking for. so what works for Taye might not work for Kenny, but if you ask me i would say you should attach them but don't talk about funding in the first email (i made this mistake).

You'll understand them cos you watch their movies. They are not used to the accent. With time you'll be fine. For now, talk slowly and pick your words.

Hahaha, it happened to me when I first got here. I was finally told the reason. It's not like they don't understand you, you need to increase the volume of your speech. Americans almost yell, and talk loudly so you have to speak a bit louder for them to hear you. Do they try to move their ears towards you when they ask you to repeat yourself? Don't know about the city you're in sha but that's what I was told here and since then, they understand me more now. I repeat myself less now, I still have a long way to go though but it's getting better. Now they tell me "Your English is so good" as if they were expecting so little from Africans.

I'm not saying I scream till they go deaf ooooo hahahaha, I just turn the volume up a bit. I was talking to my classmate today and the guy had to ask me whether I was born in America or not. I don dey blend small small with their pronunciation and all that. He was shocked when I told him I've only been in America for 1 month. The guy no believe. Gradually, we're all going to grow into the system and blend. Try this suggestion out, I hope it works.

Again, people are different. Some people are going to understand you better and faster than the others. It's just that way and with time, the adjustment and blending will sort itself out. Always remember... Fake it till you get it. wink

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. I hope you've all been doing great? I have come here to share my experience again. As usual, please if you have a problem with me, just scroll up or down and ignore this post cheesy cheesy cheesy Same way I have ignored most of the things I don't like for days and left people to carry on doing their stuff how they like it, Please ignore this one too... THANKS. Now for the patient people who don't have a P reading my epistles, relax and lemme tell you my story so far. Monday made it one month since I got to God's own country. Now let's get down to business:

In fact, I have changed my mind, In summary... America is the place to be... SIMPLE. cheesy cheesy cheesy In addition to preparing for how to pass your visa interview, go and learn how to be caring, interesting to talk to and romantic. Also, if you're a guy, go in front of a mirror... remove everything you're wearing. Look at what you have between your legs, if it is big/long enough... say to yourself confidently: I will make it in America. Forget OPT and 4.0 cgpa... Shine your eyes.

I'm kidding ooo.

Hope you're all fine? God will bless everyone of us. Keep the dream alive and remember to be kind to others.

Finally, don't say to anyone what you can't say to your mother or speak to them the way you won't speak to your mother. Respect is reciprocal, a little kindness goes a long way. Life dey sweet me dey go. cheesy cheesy cheesy God will bless that guy that approved my visa on the 29th of July 2016 and grant all his heart desires. I say a prayer for the guy every time he crosses my mind. The last 1 month has been the happiest period of my life and long may the happiness continue.

In conclusion: SSN... done, Driver's license... done. New job... done. lectures... going well, new friends... making sense, babes... excellent (I seem to be very successful with American girls - them like me no be small... one has already invited me... make we go Missouri for Christmas, she get private cabin for lake, I dey do shakara sef), General happiness... Excellent, What I think of the future... BRIGHT! Has it been very easy? Nope... It's not easy anywhere. What's my message to prospective applicants? See, give it all you've got. You're going to be very happy here if you roll with people who are happy. Stay away from negative people who want you to fail so that they can say: you see? I told you, you didn't listen. Move with those who are going to see your failures and encourage you to be better next time. God bless America!!! (No, I'm not bragging... I'm only trying to tell you how happy I am)

Oh, I forget sef... I do test for class today, lmao... I can't get more than 2/10. I wasn't even bothered cheesy cheesy cheesy I reach house, I no even shake... cos assignments, more tests and exam still dey ahead to make up for it. You know why I'm not worried? Worrying won't change the score of the test. I just have to be better prepared for next ones. cheesy cheesy cheesy I have come here to be happy, I no fit kill myself. Some people have not gained admission sef, they're worrying about OPT and what to do after visa expire, Please don't put yourself under too much pressure, it's going to make you really unhappy. I have a very encouraging family and friends. To the NLers on my bbm, God bless you all. Very positive people... Keep the ginger going. PEACE.

Okay, thanks. Download a sense of humour tho, I was kidding. I've stayed for one month, and I know people like you... expecting things to go bad so you'd say "see? I warned you". No matter the good things I write, you will be there waiting and hoping it goes bad. hahaha, wrong target bro. I am being positive no matter what. I tire for Naija people lol. Biko, move along... If you will keep attacking me with pessimism.

@Bold, I will come back to withdraw my statements and say Nigeria is better than America? Lol, if you are so pessimistic, why not go back to Nigeria and enjoy the milk and honey that's flowing there? You should call your friends or family in Nigeria and tell them to gist you about the present situation there. Life is tough everywhere bro, I have decided to see my cup as half full, not half empty. onward and upward. cheesy cheesy cheesy

And just to add, I'm not even a sex person. I've said no to sex many times since I got here, I'm only writing what I've seen and trying to share the experience. Sex isn't a contest sir, Na something to enjoy... them no dey give trophy. "fcuukk the whole life out of you and tell you to call your friends?" you probably think having a big D means you should drill a girl like you're drilling a well, looking for water. LMAO... make I just go sleep.

Okay, sleep hasn't come... I'll just write something new. I always say: stay away from pessimistic people, you may not know how strong this advice is, trust me... It's the best thing you could do if you want progress in your life. There is a difference between being pessimistic and being critical. If you have a friend who sees an error in what you're doing or about to do and constructively criticizes you, suggests a better way to go about it, without trying to put you down and make you feel like a bad person, that's fantastic. If the only thing the person does is to see the bad in everything and doesn't even tell you how to do good... be VERY CAREFUL.

I have a friend. The most pessimistic person I know in this life. I graduated with a 2.1, he had 2.2. He kept saying life is cruel cos final result doesn't mean anything, How can someone who's less brilliant that he is have 2.1 and he, 2.2. I got a job and got my apartment, got my car... again, he was so bitter, kept saying crap about how everything must have worked through nepotism. Whenever I met a beautiful girl, he would complain... what are the girls seeing in you? It's because of your car... bla bla bla, If not for your car, no girl's going to look at you cos you're too skinny. Now I'm working out in the gym, the guy keeps being negative (It's easy to build muscles abroad, anybody can get it; he said)

I get admission for yankee, the only thing he kept saying: Admission no mean anything, anybody can get it, Na visa be the koko. I get visa, again the only thing he said was... American visa kuku easy to get, people dey get am anyhow, their questions are easy to answer. Visa no mean anything. Dem fit still bounce you for POE, make you no dey happy. I told him I was trying to cut costs so I'd be flying Royal Air Maroc, you won't believe the only thing the guy was telling me for 2 days straight was how the plane could crash, how Islamic terrorists could attack us in Morocco, etc. After I cross POE, all he could think of was... I just hope you're able to pay your school fees and survive. The guy sees nothing good in all I've done so far. The only thing he talks about now... earthquake, shooting, Trump. Dude was asking me how I'll cope with Trump as president. Me wey I be legal student lol.

I won't be surprised if the guy is secretly waiting for something bad so that he can be right for once about all his predictions and wishes. God no go let anything bad happen to me. I still talk to him sha because I've known him for over 9 years, plus... I'm kinda strong mentally. Moreover, I think I can help the guy. I don't even know why I'm writing this epistle, I just think it's cool to share. Stay away from people who won't see anything good in what you're doing. Those ones that'll be secretly waiting for failure. This isn't an attack on anyone o, I just want to post what's on my mind. I never saw it anywhere that life's going to be 100% smooth and easy. May God help all of us. cheesy cheesy cheesy

Be careful though, it's a very small world. Some people you call boss, boss and tell everything about your life, share secrets with are only so nice until you start to excel more than them. If you hear stories about how jealous Naija people dey fccuukk themselves up abroad, omo... you go smart up.

If you read this whole thing till the end... omo, you try o. loooooooool. Sorry for wasting your time with my nonsense cheesy cheesy cheesy
