Very popular among yoruba folks. I've seen a baby cry her lungs out while her mom "fed" her akanmu through "all channels" grin.

......and by "all channels", I mean her mouth and her NOSE!

this is more than child abuse. Its attempted murder. Even after forcing d food on d child, he/she will still vomit it. I don't know why some mothers could be this wicked. Lord have Mercy

It depends on where you come from; to the yoolobas its not child abuse because that is how they turn children upside down to force feed them.
To the SS/SE people, this is pure child abuse, tney will wonder: 'how in the world can you turn a child upside down to force feed him? Do you want him to choke on that sludge?'

If you don't know that force feeding a child, is for the sole purpose of getting the child to eat, then you shouldn't be on this thread or even on NL.

Abeg while trying to sound sophisticated or whatever, let's try to use common sense, insulting a mother who only wants her child to eat, is just really shallow.

Btw, so far as we know, no child has died from getting fed like that, turn on your brain before commenting next time, you talk crap a lot and I say that with no intent to disrespect you.

I grew up watching mothers feed their babies like this, and I always felt uncomfortable with it. Even me, I knw I might be fed like this too.

Some children are very stubborn. They just won't eat no matter what u do n that's where ds force feeding comes in...most of us grew up wt it watching our siblings force fed while leaking catarrh, kicking n screaming! The downside of ds is,the food can go through d wrong passage n d baby can choke to death! How else do u really make a stubborn baby eat?
Omg just look at the child in this picture, he looks so helpless like they r going to kill him.. I pity him for real cry

Now there is a genuine debate on the appropriateness of this kind of feeding method.
So let's discuss, is dis child abuse??

The scary part is that the child can't cry out for help and even if he tries to gasp for air, hot akamu is forced down his throat cry

If you take this picture without context, you might get it wrong. Hot akamu and air are actually not mutually exclusive, i.e you can breathe in and swallow liquid food at the same time, through the same passage way. try it.

As a small boy i observed the process to see how it was done and to be sure whether or not it was safe, and i discovered it was reasonably safe. The women doing it might belong to a lower economic class but they are not quite dummies.

From my observation, the child is always able to breathe well during the process. Which is only logical otherwise they would suffocate and die, but since we don't hear about many such cases, we can infer positively as to safety of the procedure (at least when carried out by skilled hands).

It is astounding to see ignorant comments from "educated young Nigerian folks"

Have any of you tried eating like this. Try it out and tell me how comfortable it is.

Using the word ''Abuse'' is wrong.. I grew up to witness this in my neighbourhood. & it's done only to those stubborn children who always refuse to eat. & never have i heard of any casualties through such method.

As far as you know!!!

Force feeding is a very common cause of pneumonia.

And this automatically makes every case of pneumonia a result of force feeding?

I think we have all agreed it is not a feeding method to be encouraged, that comment was directed at the poster sounding like the women who employed such method set out to kill their kids.

So, can you tell me why it is discouraged

Sometimes, people have good intentions but are misinformed about the consequences.

How is this different from rubbing cow feces on a wound in order to heal it.

That is why "educated" people should be at the forefront of discouraging these harmful practices and not defending it.

Sometimes, we cause harm to people we love by the things we do to them.

That was how my mother fed me and all my siblings. And looking back at those glorious days, I say a million thank you to my loving mother. For those screaming child abuse, how I wish I recorded the way our parents bathed us when we were babies?....Holding by the leg upside down, throwing into the air..................it was fun!

There is something mother do not know, if the food is tasteless, the child will not eat it,after my last baby, the nurse asked me to make pap as sweet as possible if I want the child to eat it,with plenty milk n sugar! Yes sugar!she told me that babies have taste buds too,but we feel they don't need sugar,if your child does not like her food or pap,add sugar n milk n u will see the difference, I tried it and it worked
Please this method of feeding babies is DEADLY,make the food tasty, the child will eat,our parents were just ignorant, who knows how many babies died unexplained deaths!
