WOW WOW WOW... I see a lot of frustration on the path of certain people who probably haven't found their feet solidly in the feild of microbiology in Nigeria. Admittedly, the NSM (Nigerian Society of Microbiology) is yet to gain grounds in terms of recognition and have full authority, which i know for sure they are working towards, that doesn't mean microbiology is useless as a course in Nigeria. infact i just saw some organization asking for microbiologist (though with experience ) and are paying well. The problem with us most times is we don't always want to start small, thats what is making course like it sell well. Paid/no pay internship, summer jobs is a way to boost ur CV as a microbiologist while in school, I tell you no employer will employe you now when you cant even operate a microscope to start with. Well maybe i will use this forum to enlighten us more on the field of mcb and oputunity that abound. Other courses such as Medical lab and co are almost taking our place but the field is so large.
am a practising microbiologist

[quote author=michelz post=49960687]I see a lot of people are disillusioned about Microbiology. Infact, many people don't know why they studied Microbiology or what it even means to be a microbiologist. Let me briefly open your eyes. As a microbiologist, you're first of all, trained to be independent. You must be able to carry out researches with little or no supervision. Even if you don't get a paid job, there are so many things you can do as a microbiologist. For examples, you can culture helpful microbes, package them and sell to organic farmers and many others who need them; you can develop new antibiotics and other chemicals; you can develop biosurfactants that are highly needed by many industries; you can develop biofuels and help the energy situation of the country; you can bioengineer new organisms to develop better products... The list is endless. Microbiology is one of the best science courses out there, and it cuts across both biological and physical science. For you to find your feet in microbiology as a career, you must first of all be good at it.[/quote
Your imputs/Suggestions assume that these research and inventions can be carried out in isolation or in the comfort of one's sitting room! That is simply not true. For any of your above suggestions to be carried out, there has to be an enabling environment, a standard facility with all the relevant equipment, such which is not even found in the universities from which most of us graduated. A while ago I was making research into how to make biofuel from natural wastes and sewage. the cost implications of such a 'simple' project was staggering! I had to discard or at least pend the idea. As a fresh graduate for example, where am I supposed to get the millions needed to fund and implement my research? Much less one for which you need incubators and autoclaves and all sorts of growth media and all the sterile environment and all that. I don't mean to disenfranchise anyone but mcb in Nigeria is almost a wasted effort, unless you just want to have the degree then veer into something else. I say this for the upcoming folks who can still switch to a more productive course like med lab science and biochemistry.

Is that not true for many Nigerians who WASTE their own (and their parents') time, money, talent and efforts for at least four years simply because they want to be on campus.
Is it not better to identify one's passion early and go to a vocational training and technical school of six months and more to start with and begin work, gaining practical experience with exposure before deciding to get more formal education
Certificates na PAPER and it is quite different from the knowledge and skills acquired in training.

Realistically, I should say it's a waste of time....had to learn this artisan job to keep myself. why are we even going to these higher institutions for God's sake? You spend 4 years or more in school, go for one useless National Service, and what does one gets after, sits at home all day. I went to learn 'handwork' as a layman would call it when I got tired of sitting at home....it can be frustrating, that's when some family members would come visit and be discussing with you some nonsense talks; for the ladies, they will be like, "when are you getting married? "....so so annoying angry

My younger sis studied History and International relations and graduated with a good grade. She hasn't worked one day with her degree. Now she's into makeup/photography and doing very well. Does that make her course irrelevant? No
because You ain't practising doesn't mean its not worth the effort/time

Words of thought from the thread
1. Are we being prepared for the future
2. Are we loaded with practical knowledge
3. Do we knw what nanotechnology is
4. Are we looking outwards I mean plan for alternative s
5. Do we have direction and commitment
6. Are we boosting our CV
7. Do we like to start small

Despite this, many are still continuing on the WASTEFUL path.
Many churches are setting up universities instead of setting up vocational centres and technical schools.
There must be something wrong with us oh!

Please can you explain HOW/WHY the four years (or more due to strikes etc) paying for and studying History & International Relations is relevant to her make-up/photography work?
Thanks.

I studied Microbiology . Loved the course however I will say the lecturers and NSM are not playing their parts well to make sure that the graduate they send out each year are being relevant in that field. The medical lab science have taken over the medical microbiology aspects now the science lab tech have taken over the industry and institutional laboratory. So if you are having just BSc on microbiology the society is making it difficult for you to fit in, and nsm isn't doing much. I hv an MSc in microbiology, went for an interview in one of the federal universities to work in the microbiology laboratory I did well in the exams and interviews but was denied employment because I didn't have science lab technology certification or license. I been making moves to write the professional exam for slt but the body in Ibadan have been posting me saying the adimission forms are not yet out.

so becos she's not practising means her course of study is irrelevant or useless in Nigeria sir/ma. Lets not start this here. The point is we all don't get head start the same time and that's largely or in most case due to our actions or in actions while in school.

you might think the "degree" BSC is useless but the course Microbiology isn't useless. there are so many others too who studied a particular course as undergraduate but who are in a totally different field. that's my point.

its like you just spew the beans! Coliform test is too much. Let them just focus the microscope on a prepare a slide.

You CANNOT show the relevance of her four years (or more) WASTED money, efforts, talents etc on campus to her make-up/photography work.
If you can, start and state the relevance here.
Otherwise it is obvious you were bluffing about something you know NOTHING about.

i totally agree with you. a whole lot has not gone into professionalism of the course. Hands on expertise is one and having certification to back up is another

microbiology....... a wasted effort in Nigeria. not to make anyone feel bad but that's the fact. we thought we could fit in most places but truth is out there, we belong almost nowhere in particular.

my advice after school, it's either you get a life outside microbiology or go for MSc so you'd become a lecturer and train more microbiologist into this facade of a life.

I read microbiology tho and I know what I'm saying
I agree with you on the fact that its hard to fit in,but not on the part of it been a wasted effort..that's pretty muCH like throwing your life away..no effort is wasted, especially not after the exams, and IT, SEMInar defence, project practicals,e.t.c.. No effort is wasted in life,it'll bear fruit one day,one way or the other.. GREAT MICROBIOLOGISTS.. I read microbiology too.
