pseudomonas:anonimi: bros you still didn't answer the logical question i asked since. am sure you are not a microbiologist, you are probably angry at the system, accusing some who knows well in this field of Bluffing is the height of it. i will leave it at that. What most don't know of microbiology is that it is more of a practicability than theory. Being a makeup artist or a photographer or painter requires skills, so does microbiology. Most just read and cram and pour out in exams, when they are asked to practicalize what they have learnt it becomes difficult. funny enough, the first practical lesson on microbiology i learnt was taught to me by an accountant! I can't forget bro toyin, he can culture anything, he didn't get a job and he decided to try out in a medical lab close by my area i happen to be doing IT there at that time. funny enough the same thing you are saying of microbiology others too may be saying about their course becos they just didn't get a job immediately when they finished school. graduating from a course is one thing and knowing the practices of that course is another(am not saying those who graduated don't) but it takes more than presenting a certificate of graduation to get a job for certain profession. your first degree makes you a learned individual thats the truth most people don't want to accept. what happened to all the Engineering graduates in bank, do we now say enginerring is a useless course? even those who studied "bush burning and hunting" in university won't say the course is a useless one if they know the 'art' well that being said let me introduce myself Psuedomonas BSC microbiology UNAAB 2008( hello Disneylady SLT MAPOLY 2003 teacher/ researcher/technician/ federal training Institute (I just can't give the name out here) 2 Likes |

solatex02:weldone brother. There's just a whole lot for a microbiologist to do in our world today. Infact,i say this almost certainty: the future is for microbiologists and biotechnologists. This is because in our world today, there's the need for new improved ways of doing things and solving problems. The potentials of microbes are enormous, and in effect,a microbiologist. If you know how to manipulate microbes, you know how to research involving microbes, then my brother, you're practically unstoppable. In Environmental microbiology, the sky is just your starting point - you go beyond normal medical tests that med lab people may be able to do,into manipulating organisms and harnessing the beneficial ones. As a microbiologist, you know exactly why a particular microbe is resistant to a particular drug, and what you can do about it. Many microbiologists i know do freelance researches for companies and business owners who need them to test the effect of particular chemicals on the natural environment - and they get paid handsomely for that. This is just the tip. As a microbiologist, you're capable of designing better machines or models to do works. When you talk about green energy that the world is currently hyping about, microbiology stands shoulder high amongst with just a few other science courses. For you to be relevant in microbiology like i stated earlier, you must first of all be good at microbiology; you should understand the course very well. Even as Nigeria is facing serious pollution due to oil spillages and the rest,a microbiologist can easily sort it out and restore the place to it's natural condition before the pollution. 2 Likes |

[quote author=deltateam post=49971751] When an elder speaks its takes another elder to understand where he's coming from. I can relate with this insightful post. After having read Microbiology I discovered to my utmost dismay that there was a standing order that Microbiologist have no business in a laboratory in Nigeria. They will rather employ Science Laboratory Technologists. I can count the number of Microbiologists I know that are well paid. I met one of my colleagues and she is now working in a ba It's cold, it's bitter but it's d truth dt U hv jst said. I tried to avoid contributn bt can't hold back. @ mom007,i agree that some of the equipment one might need to carry out researches may be expensive, but it's the same with almost other professions. A practicing lawyer will need books worth almost hundreds of thousands of naira for his researches and to stay relevant in his field; a medical doc who wants to go into private practice will still need equipment that are expensive; an engineer will need equipment ( if he can't fabricate them himself) that are expensive too... Almost all other professions require costly materials. Why should it be different for a microbiologist? But a microbiologist has an advantage in the sense that microbes are ubiquitous. You already have the basic material you need. Other equipment can also be modified or fashioned by a microbiologist in worst case scenarios. What equipment do you think Louis Pasteur and Edward Jenner worked with in those days that they were able to achieve great feats? You don't necessarily need very expensive equipment for your pilot researches. As for biofuel production from waste materials, you can design a mini model for it,report your observations, make recommendations and then seek for sponsorship. Cheers. |

I'm sorry to say the bitter truth, there's no job for a Microbiologist in Nigeria unless you want to manage small pure water factory jobs where you are paid less than 50K. How many times have you seen adverts about microbiology? Very few will make it in microbiology but you have to pay the price of furthering your education to become mostly lecturers or professionals in related fields. Most make it outside microbiology. I won't advice any one to study microbiology except there's no better option. |

misscall247:Small boy, please calm down. You are an outsider and way too young and inexperienced , so let us who have made the mistake with microbiology and corrected our mistakes show others who are humble enough to learn the light. Microbiology is presently overrated and the way it's taught is too theoretical. It is not a professional course for Godsake so they don't enjoy good pay despite being experts in their own right. If for example, I was taught how to use my microbiology to build at least a small scale cheese making company from the scratch,I can at least use that as insurance in the event that I opt out from the other areas microbiologists play secondary roles. Not everyone is your mate so learn to show some respect. |

I have read almost every comment on this thread. Every one is complaining but no one is giving suggestions for microbiologists who have reached a dead end in practising what they studied. I believe SLT (Micro option.), Food Microbiologists, Environmental microbiologists, Med Lab Scientists (Micro specialists), and those who read just Microbiology in uni/poly are all microbiologists. What we need is deep collaboration amongst ourselves to help and develop each other. I am a Med Lab Scientist specialised in Microbiology. There are certain sectors where it is required by law to have certain certification before you can work. That is what Med Lab Science (Health sector) and SLT (industrial sector) is enjoying. But in ideal conditions, the jobs those sectors can provide is small compared to what can be gotten. In Nigeria, the gov't has not given any attention to research. Research has the opportunity to provide A LOT of jobs. Although the microbiology curriculum Nigeria offers is full of theory and no practicals (except for Med Lab Science curriculum), I believe if the jobs are created, the skills will be acquired through training and re-training by those who have it. What we need to do as microbiologists in general is to come together under one umbrella and make serious advocacy to the ministry of science and technology to create funding avenues for research. Research options are abound in Health, Agriculture, Bioremediation, Biogas, Pharmaceuticals, bioinformatics and biotechnology especially using molecular genetics and nano technological techniques. And only research brings advancement in every facet of human life. Multinational corporations in Nigeria prefer to support music than scientific research that can bring about national advancement. These companies, foundations, gov't and others should be made to pledge some sum of money to research annually. This same issue affects those who studied Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physiology. Those who read biochem and physiology are mostly pharmaceutical reps these days. They rarely practice what they studied. So my suggestion is creation of an umbrella that will go on a fruitful advocacy for microbiologists, irrespective of specialization, so as to create job opportunities for microbiologists especially in research and development. |

misscall247:Good. I'm sorry that I had to bully you with my age and experience. I just want to encourage everyone to quickly identify the knowledge gap in what you are being taught in the university and work hard to overcome that deficit.Ultimately,it will no longer matter how prestigious or not the course you studied is. I wish you best of luck bro |

microb: microb:There is no sin in you setting up your own laboratory as far as you are licensed. It all depends on your academic and research experience. To 90% BSc in Nigeria the practical aspect is alittle difficult just because of the limited exposure to practicals and some equipment but it is only a few of Polytechnic graduates who do not make their practical a point of duty will find having your laboratory difficult most especially if they thought they find themselves by mistake in the course. It is at the beginning of your class introduction in school you will be having interest in having your own lab or not and the fast area of your concentration must be identified based on your laboratory location. E. G Like my own now am not residing in an FMCG companies area and I look at the area of my research which based on Laboratory animal management/agro allied.with that I reside in an environment where many farms and agroallie business is their major concern and I begin my marketing awareness and under few weeks patronage comes and one thing about this area of specialisation is that you must be fast familiar with your microbes characterization off hand with limited practical to be able to reduce the cost expenses of your customer due to the kind of products they are having, what you need are just little and minimal apparatus which mostly run instant results under hours. The other related aspect is schools in which you will have to target every new session to have more new client most especially those that really just having senior classes in order to handle their laboratory construction and equipped this is not limited to that you extend to some micro production companies such as pure water, Feeds and food formulation companies like those just starting their coy to render some minimal food production technique, requirement and procedure for them as well as branding and packaging for NAFDAC approval. Other area that is even most profitable is having training school for the area you know the people of that your location needs help Inter of development of the community at large. With this little area you can go places. 2 Likes |
