I read Microbiology from Nnamdi Azikiwe University some years back.. Truth be told....there are very few career paths in this discipline...I fought tooth and nail hoping to get a job in either Nestle or NBL but to no avail.. I moved on....went for PGD, MBA and found my self in a New generation bank.... I still found out i was not cut out for banking...today am on my own doing my thing... I want to encourage undergraduates and recent graduates to start looking outwards... Most especially dont joke with any thing that will enable you to become an entrepreneur..... I must be here MRDOJO Grad Student (Environmental Microbiology). Special interest in water contamination and oil pollution... Microbiology is a very good course to study, just that Nigeria as made it very very difficult for Microbiologist to do well...I encourage all microbiologist out there to create a Niche for themselves in a particular option(s), I believe if you are the best at what you do, you'll surely make progress and stand out, its also important that as a microbiologist you do not limit your self..(Be a specialist in more than one option from: Food to Medical to Virology). Let's all not forget that we need to apply the great knowledge given to us in ways which can benefit mankind....( And our pocket ) Great Microbiologist......Exploring the World of Microbes.... 5 Likes |

Disneylady: Is that not true for many Nigerians who WASTE their own (and their parents') time, money, talent and efforts for at least four years simply because they want to be on campus. Is it not better to identify one's passion early and go to a vocational training and technical school of six months and more to start with and begin work, gaining practical experience with exposure before deciding to get more formal education Certificates na PAPER and it is quite different from the knowledge and skills acquired in training. www.nairaland.com/attachments/2920815_fbimg1443594726987_jpegc00071cb2902eb1726fe8107c3b2dbb6 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Franklin Ifeanyi santino Michael okpara uni of agriculture Nysc intern Well i can't say i regret studying microbiology coz most courses are becoming irrelevant and as a graduate one can fit in anywhere. but truth be told, microbiology is outdated, medical lab science n science lab tech is better currently as they aren't discriminated. However, more recently nano tech is the future. 1 Like |

Industrial chemistry is not microbiology and cannot replace it. It is what it is concerning microbiology.... So ask your direct question. Ask me that question that will help you take a decision or clarify a disturbing information. I sincerely understand career things that might be of help to all of us..... So keep the questions coming. ipledge10: |

lol I almost did microbiology in uni till I met a doctor who advices me to go for biotechnology instead..study biotechnology and then major in embryology he said. Got a place in uni then I decided it wasn't for me, the future prospects of an embryologist in naija looks bleak still so now I'm into IT hoping to run my own biz. My advice to mcb graduates is, speak to a professional (probably not Nigerian, they're a bit narrow minded no offence) or just further your studies in something outside but related to MCB. That's the sad truth yo |

Please we still urge those dat have grown in the field or outside to advice the new lads in d field, not all dis derogatory comments dat I'm seeing... Believe me mcb is not as bad as some courses, but with direction nd commitment u can still do something worthwhile out of it.. So all d senior men who has Bsc/HND mcb should advice us on things to do like d OP highlighted... Thank u |

Shammak UI NYSC Intern Working as a Microbiologist (Medical) at a state hospital in Kwara state. I have had interest in microbiology since my first biology class in my high school so I find it interesting (maybe because of the passion). I didn't study microbiology just because I had no choice (in fact, there were many "better" alternatives). I studied microbiology because I CHOSE it. Now I feel fulfilled as I made the right choice! My advice... Know the things you are passionate about Discover your strengths Have a goal and walk/work towards it **One of the reasons I studied microbiology** It is a step to reaching my goal.. 3 Likes |

I think the greatest opportunity for microbiologist is in food microbiology. The other fields have licensed professionals to oversea them for example, in pharmaceutical, he works under the pharmacist, in lab, he will work under the pathologist or med lab scientist and if he goes into environmental, there are water engineers/environmental health officers and public analyst(a microbiologist who can pass the ipan exams can be a public analyst though) who are licensed professionals. In food, they can produce fermented condiments, cheese, yoghurt ,beverages, bakery and largescale yeast manufacturing. I think the course should have more of practical entrepreneurial content it's presently too theoretical in Nigeria. Truth be told, it's overrated and except those in charge of training of microbiologist act fast, they will soon be another Zoology. In the teaching of Biology, I will prefer a Zoologist or biochemist anyday. Most of the content of university Microbiology is not relevant to secondary school biology teaching 3 Likes |

I'll suggest you graduate with a good grade and go for your MSc. right now am thinking of diversifying into gender and development for my MSc, it fits more into my plans.... 2 Likes |

Nice thread. Microbiology? Although I was trained in the field of Microbiology, I obtained another utme when I was in my final yr...... currently in a medical school now. Medical laboratory Science is even a better option. Microbiologists 've limited space in food n pharmaceutical industries because of some courses like industrial chemistry, food technology, nutrition and dietics, biochemistry etc. Microbiologists 're not even employed in a standard secondary school because Microbiology is not the same thing wif Biology education. I want to encourage fresh graduates to start thinking outside the box. |

I see a lot of people are disillusioned about Microbiology. Infact, many people don't know why they studied Microbiology or what it even means to be a microbiologist. Let me briefly open your eyes. As a microbiologist, you're first of all, trained to be independent. You must be able to carry out researches with little or no supervision. Even if you don't get a paid job, there are so many things you can do as a microbiologist. For examples, you can culture helpful microbes, package them and sell to organic farmers and many others who need them; you can develop new antibiotics and other chemicals; you can develop biosurfactants that are highly needed by many industries; you can develop biofuels and help the energy situation of the country; you can bioengineer new organisms to develop better products... The list is endless. Microbiology is one of the best science courses out there, and it cuts across both biological and physical science. For you to find your feet in microbiology as a career, you must first of all be good at it. 12 Likes 2 Shares |

WOW WOW WOW... I see a lot of frustration on the path of certain people who probably haven't found their feet solidly in the feild of microbiology in Nigeria. Admittedly, the NSM (Nigerian Society of Microbiology) is yet to gain grounds in terms of recognition and have full authority, which i know for sure they are working towards, that doesn't mean microbiology is useless as a course in Nigeria. infact i just saw some organization asking for microbiologist (though with experience ) and are paying well. The problem with us most times is we don't always want to start small, thats what is making course like it sell well. Paid/no pay internship, summer jobs is a way to boost ur CV as a microbiologist while in school, I tell you no employer will employe you now when you cant even operate a microscope to start with. Well maybe i will use this forum to enlighten us more on the field of mcb and oputunity that abound. Other courses such as Medical lab and co are almost taking our place but the field is so large. am a practising microbiologist 4 Likes 1 Share |
