I grew up on the farm and know what farming entails. Just like other professions require skills, farming itself require a level of skill with a lot of strength and stamina. If you have never been a farmer by some form of training and you venture into it, the chances you will tire out is high. A serious government should stop saying everyone should go and farm when discussion like this ensues. Let look for those who already have the stamina, energy and necessary level of skill, encourage them to remain on farm, give them incentives and invest in them.

On the issue of rice importation ban, I got your argument but a serious government needs to have a short term, medium term and long term plan. Until our policy makers start learning to use those articulated languages and stop all their braggado and fire brigade approach method to things, we aint go anywhere!
I also grew up working on farms. There are always two sides to a coin. This ban on importation through land border is the way to go. The moment we realise the damage this addictive need to import basic food materials does to the nations' socio economic framework of this country, then we would support this policy. Farmers can never compete with the cheaper imports. Many of them have been forced to abandon farms due to this, and flood the cities looking for menial jobs. Investors are not keen to invest in commercial production of rice in an import dependent economy. Unemployment soars. Youth restiveness. Loans can hardly be accessed by farmers because of the fear uneven competition. I interact with persons in the agro sector, so I believe am well informed. Many of the challenges in this sector are actually avenue for new business openings

The answer is a big YES!

Do u have in your farm at N5000 pre bag for poor masses of like 5million people to buy every month. I feel u will reason with my illustration which someone equally made on this platform minutes ago but reverse is the case. How many bags do u have in your house presently and how much does each cost.i hope you are not part of the ignoramus supporting all policy of this administration even when they are bad.

This so called uzor uzor must be an importer of rice.. i tot gov willie obiano said anambra state will soon be rice self sufficient... This uzor ouzo should go look for ways to support this current adminstration rather than looking for way to take the country back... No going back nigeria will soon start exportation of rice this one is talking about import....

How can a graduate make such statement..... God to farm to feed ur family. Are we to go into agriculture to feed our immediate family? Is dat d brain behind d return to agriculture slogan of dis govt? It clearly shows dat our generation is wack n don't ve anything to offer

My friend if you cant wait for local rice to penetrate d market, go n produce ur own n feed ur family, those days pple used to gave gardens at d back of their house, at d back of my house den we used to have lots of plantain trees, I remember wen we had those trees we never bot plantain n it was always n abundance even to d extent tht it used to get spoilt. We cut it down n used d space for something else.

Now go n price plantain n d market. Like I said back den pple had garden at d back of houses, were has that culture hone to, go abroad, ull still find pple having little garden were dey pick tomato, pepper, veg, maize .....so ders nuffn wrong n having a little farm to feed ur family

As i'm typing this, i'm dying of hunger and believe me, there's no money. The hike in price for rice is really unbearable. Poor man is dying of hunger! The banning shud hv been considered only when there has been plentiful local production.

Short term, medium term and long term plan the way to go. Ban, yes but gradual not outright when our local production can't yet meet our consumption. This whole idea of our policy makers muddling things up is sickening. If their is shortfall in local production too, demand exceed supply, price skyrockets and smuggling is encouraged. So government must come up with some form of control not outright ban but a tariff-controlled mechanism until we achieve sufficient production..

Do you farm yourself? You asked him to go and farm, assuming he goes into farming, subsistence farming; you think in this age and time and in a country of 180million people, subsistence farming is what will take the country out of this doldrums?
When I read comments like yours I am certain you are one of those who probably don't know what farming entails. Subsistence farming oga is not what the country needs to be food sufficient. We need massive investment in mechanised farming. With mechanised farming all Nigerians don't need to farm. 10% of our population doing that will feed everyone and we will still have left to export. It is what is obtained in developed society. That is why government needs to give incentives as the post suggests. Even constant power availability is needed. What happens when you produce so much and yet you can't preserve them? Only illiterate think everybody must be farmers. If we are all farmers, who will be mechanics, doctors, nurses, teachers, et al. You listen too much to ignorant people in government.
They are the ones who tell everyone to go and farm when they don't farm. They tell fresh graduates without experience, exposure and capital to not look for job but create one when with all the money they stole and opportunity they have had they haven't created one job themselves. Foolish leaders who look for ways to dodge their responsibility of first catering for their people.

God bless you bro

Govt has not said everybody should go to d farm, I was d one hu said that anybody clamouring for rice importation because the price of rice is too high nd der r hungry, dey should go n farm.

Govt has plans already we c wht is happening n Anambra, Even CBN has keyed into d anambra rice project, Lagos n Kebbi partnership...called Lake rice that would make local rice affordable n sustainable n Lagos.....Abakaliki is doing something similar...

So what more do u want d govt to do??,permit me to go into this.Pple said GEJ made giant strides n agriculture, where r d products??......

The problem is that we expect a miracle tp happen, we expect tht wen d govt does smtyn today den tomorrow we wud just start seeing local rice errywer n d market. It is not magic.

If u agree with me on importation then d only way is to produce our local rice, if u have d power to go into it u go weda its to feed ur family or commercialy, just go.........

U think govt will just start dashing pple moni to go n farm, if govt starts dashing out moni to pple like that how many pple do u tink wud actually go m farm with this moni....ull c pple buying flashy cars with d moni......

The govt has already made gaint strides n growing local rice let's support dem

The short term approach of lifting the ban for a short period time never yielded meaningful results in OBJ's tenure. Control mechanism presently in place is to allow importation through sea ports, where duties are collected. This leads to higher prices on imported rice, which ordinarily is good for local production. But smuggling thru land boarders, in order to evade duties is what govt is kicking against. This kills rice farmers. This ban on land border importation serves short, medium and long term issues.

There is Rice everywhere in the North and in IDP Camps to feed Bokoharam. Remember the Speech, "I will starve all the States that did not vote for me". And there is no Ban on Audu Ogbeh from importing Grass for Cattle Feeding. For some humans, no Rice, but for Cows, plenty of Grass to takeover. Democracy for Cattle, Feudalism for humans.

It seems it's you that is stupid and not the govt. Who told u Nigeria does not import rice? Why do some of you guys run your mouth without having your facts? 60-65% of rice we are consuming is being imported. The govt only banned rice importation through the borders.

Rice is still being imported through the ports for your information.

Brazil today is a net exporter of rice, because dey made the bold step to produce their own rice, bcomw self sufficient n exporters of rice. It took a decade 10 good yrs to achieve tht feat, do u think pple didn't suffer during that 10yr period. We only think of now, of ourselves, we never border to do things rite....Ebonyi state govt has banned eating of foreign rice so that abakaliki rice can thrive. Such policies should be encouraged . if u can't eat rice, if u can't eat beans, den go for garri. Atleast tht is made locally

The ban should be lifted for whatever reasons, our local productions must be encouraged if we want to diversify this economy,

The other time, rice worth $3billion is at different warehouses in Benin republic waiting to enter the shores, can u imagine what that amount can do to the pockets of local farmers? The employment it will create and then what it will do to our high demands on fx?

I don't like the way this administration is handling the economy, but that rice case is a step in good direction.

Nobody would go into producing local rice if you flood d market with imported rice...u dnt want to suffer but u want to just enjoy. It doesn't work that way. If I as a local farmer wants to produce rice n large quantity, do u know how much moni it would cost me, den wen I finish, ders nobody to buy my rice because d foreign one is all over d market..if we kip waiting for wen we have d local one in abundance bfre we now ban, we just b going round circles no head way.

Please be quiet and stop making noise. Local rice has long left that level of stones. There are no stones in abakaliki rice, neither in niger state rice. I sometimes buy mine directly from the mill but it is very much available in the market. And yes it is cheaper than the imported brand.

Two different things..Nigeria has more arid and farmable land than Countries like Thailand and Indonesia.. So who so ever gave you whatever impression that Nigeria can not feed itself gave a wrong idea...so go and farm and stop blaming government for everything.
