Our flag honors those who have fought to
protect it.

You fought to keep Nigeria as one. Those that killed you in that bloody coup made you a hero, they gave you an Identity that is second to none.

You invented the phrase "fellow Nigerians" which is used widely today even by the descendants of your killers.

Your name shall ever remain in our history and your face shall always grace the hands of your enemies.

I don't like hearing that we must be one.. I love the diverse culture of Nigerians...and I appreciate us a lot...but as a young and energetic , educated, Democratic and peace loving person...I detest the words 'we must be one' or celebrate anyone who fought to keep us one..

For godsake...what is wrong wit some of us? I met a retired military man who only kept bragging how he fought to keep us united..during civil war..

I simply asked him...he looked poor...I asked him..and what is the gain of being one oga mi?

He looked at me...I said..sorry sorry...u are a taxi driver...after 35 years of service plus civil war fight and all the risks...someone somewhere might av swallowed ur entitlements..and u are here...what is the gain of the unity that u fought?

He kept quiet and looker sober...I left... After 50 years...if we are still like this and some people still celebrate those who fought for our unity, I SMH for u all.. There is no pride in that...our leaders have cheated us badly..

Nigeria can never be good as long as we keep celebrating evil people..
All the failed coupist were killed and their history closed by Nigeria government but the succeeded ones are celebrated like some are calling this man a hero, rapist, murderer, coup plotter and so on a hero??..

No wonder corruption is growing in Nigeria because Nigeria honours succeeded corrupt politicians..

I quite agree with you that our leaders have cheated and continue to embezzle funds meant for the physical and social development of our nation.

However, if The ikemba of nnewi could be celebrated for a failed quest then I think it is not a crime to celebrate someone who has laid down his life for the unity of this country.

Should we rather cast Murtala Muhammad for his selfless service?

Fate has brought us together 'as one' but if we must part ways, so be it. After all most nations were built on the basis of blood, passion, honour and liberty.

Its because many Nigerians dont know their history that a man like murtala Ramat mohammed still has not just a place of honour on the 20 Naira note, but also has an International Airport and many other landmarks named after him. How is this possible? Or is it that no one cares about history any more? How can such a controversial character still be accorded such recognition?
The sins of murtala:

1] Led the counter coup and superviced the killing of over 300 fellow officers. murtala led other northern elements (including the then Lt Buhari) to commit this murderous act in retaliation for what they tagged an "Igbo coup". For me,a coup plotter, wether Nzeogwu or Murutala has any place in history. It should also be noted that everyone who participated in the first coup were punished at the end of the war while Murutala and co who committed far worse atrocities got off scot-free.

2]Troops under murtala's command committed genocide in Asaba when they entered the city at the start of the civil war. Over 700 defenceless civilians who came to welcome the federal troops were gunned down in cold blood. Wether this happend on Murutala's orders or not is immaterial. His troops killed people and he should bear responsibility for the conduct of his men.

3]murtala,in direct contravention of orders and sound advice led thousands of Nigerian soldiers to their deaths trying to cross the river Niger (in 3 separate attempts) into Onitsha all in his vain attempt to increase his popularity. His troops would later be destroyed at Abagana and he was recalled from the war and sent to London while many of his men lay dead under the River Niger.

4]murtala came to represent the face of northern domination. He kicked out Gowon, seized power, retired everyone who was above him in rank and in one of the worst acts of military indecipline,he triple promoted himself from a one star Brigadier to a full 4 star General. Murutala was the first military officer to conduct a coup in other to take political power. Even Nzeogwu and co had no intention to take power for themselves.

murtala mohammed was a failed soldier,a sociopath, mass murderer and accomplished coup plotter. Because of him, many people needlessly died.

Ironically, during the massacre of Asaba, he protected PCK Nzeogwu's mother. He made sure no harm came to her..

Murtala was originally from Plateau State...

Even in other countries. Sunday is generally a work free day.

Why didn't you a dress the murder if thousands of civilians mentioned in his post?

If there was one man that had a profound effect on our history, perhaps more than any other, it was Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed. Sadly he was assassinated 40 years ago, on February 13th 1976. In a clime and a nation in which there are few true heroes, he was certainly one of them.

Dont compare Ojukwu and Murtala Mohammed. Murtala was killing people long before Biafra or the war. Ojukwu was never involved in any coup that killed hundreds of people, Ojukwu never ordered the killing of innocent people. All Ojukwu did was fight a war of independence to free his people. Murtala Mohammed was a cold blooded murderer.

you are a bad student of history! you need to study the events that took place before and after the 1966 bloody coup. I still repeat it! Ojukwu fought a fruitless war. Indeed ojukwu is a selfless visionary leader, but the truth is that he ran away when his people needed him most.

What events are you talking about? Ojukwu was commanding Kano Garrison when the first coup occured. Nzeogwu phoned him and asked him to join the uprising, he refused.

Contrast that to Murtala Mohammed that led a coup which killed over 300 officers, mostly from the Eastern Region.

Ojukwu fought a war to free his people from Northern controlled Nigeria. Wether the war was fruitless or not is not the important thing. The important thing is why he did it. People fight wars of liberation all the time, America did it against Britain, Eitheria did against Ethiopia and so on. People fight to be free, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesnt as in the case of Ojukwu. However, Ojukwu fought a noble cause which his people appreciate. The fact that he lost is not as important as what he fought for. No pain, no gain.

Murtala Mohammed only ever fought for his fellow Northerners to have control of Nigeria and have access to Oil and Sea port.
