ModestGal...What do you need help with? How close is your exam?
I assume you have Manhattan books already. Be precise with what you need help with so folks can be of help.

For Vocab building, the Magoosh flashcard app does some good job, though you should be on the lookout for any new word you come across from reading blogs, papers, news, etc. You should have a dictionary app on your phone to always check and recheck words. Example: I learnt "recondite" from Nairaland when someone used it to describe RC passages. Sartorial was used to describe Mark Zuckerbergs' jacket when he met Buhari

In my case, I usually use the app when I'm saturated reading other Textbooks and doing those "funny" RC passages; it was my subtle way of cooling off. A good strategy in learning Vocab is association: after seeing the word, what looks strange to you about it? The meaning of the word...which friend or person you know has that characteristics? Peevish and Petulant describes some of my friends that are easily rankled...That way I always remember the meaning of the words.

Another way is to group similar words together eg Besmirch,Polemic, Diatribe, Lampoon, Lambast, Objurgate all have similar meaning. Once you've learnt a word, any new word you come across that have similar meaning, associate them! I'm sure you'd find a couple of them.

Lastly, words need practice. Always think about the new words you've learnt, how you can incorporate them into your regular vocab or even use it in your Issue or argument essay! Keep thinking, using and rechecking the meaning of the words. You can also taunt your friends with them, I almost lost some when I bombarded them with grandiloquence! At least, it made the words stick!

Keep practicing, it might take some time but you'd progressively improve.
My best wishes!

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Nobody: 10:29pm On Nov 16, 2016
Hi crowntoro
I heard there is an agency that offers vouchers to test writers at pretty
good prices. BY Outfit or something, not sure. I would implore that you
read previous pages of the thread. Another option is to ask someone in
the US or anywhere outside Nigeria to pay for the exam for you while
you reimburse the naira equivalent to him or her.

You can get started by visiting this link: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register/computer/
Before then, you need to have an ETS GRE account.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. smiley

Hi brothers and sisters, I just want to share a testimony so others may also benefit.

I took the advice of friends and many co-nairalanders to start contacting Profs prior to making applications. I think I mailed about 4 and even sent reminders but none of them responded. I gave up at some point to focus on preparing for my standardized tests. After my first GRE attempt, knowing I was going to retake, I started contacting grad coordinators about their multiple GRE policy. Only one grad coordinator was nice enough to respond - in addition to answering my question, basically told me how high their admissions standards are and how they rarely admit international students and that all their admits are exceptional students. I just went.....Ok blah blah. Granted Top 30ish school. Needless to say, I felt deflated. I was never going to waste my money and apply. I searched for a lower ranked school to replace it with. After my repeat GRE exam, I decided to start making my applications and I said to myself, drhopeful you are a fighter, you never give up trying, not now. I applied to that school amongst others. To my greatest surprise, a week after submitting my app, a prof from the said school mailed me. Someone I never contacted. And at this point, my application was still incomplete; I was still waiting on one letter of recommendation. So you can imagine the shock. The prof went on and on about how impressive my application was, and that he wants to skype asap shocked to discuss potential research topics shocked shocked and answer any questions I may have. Anyway, Skype conversation was two days after and might I say, the man seems the nicest advisor to work with.

Ok end of my story. I just needed to encourage someone. Good night guys.

Good day guys, Please a school I am applying to, is requesting for proof of financial statement in the application. I actually have a potential advisor in the school who has said he would check his whole pool of applicants and hope I get a TA, hence I get funded.

Please, my question his, has anyone faced such dilemma? How did you go about that in your application?

Thanks.

The school should be able to admit you or deny you without the financial statement. It's only when you're admitted that they'll need it to confirm if you can pay, if you are not getting any funding. To be sure, ask the grad prog coord.

That's a huge testimony @drhopeful. It's really encouraging. I've mailed more than 4 majority of which I got no reply despite reminders. I was priviledged to get a reply from one but unfortunately she is too swamped to take on new advisees at the moment. I'd keep trying and I'll also start praying for this kinda testimony. grin
All the best.

You seem to have forgotten in a hurry the directions I gave you. Try to read from the very first page of this thread. You'll gather a lot of information. so much so that you may not need to ask any question, as many of the questions you may have has been answered. The effort you put in to search for information about how to go bout graduate education will definitely come in handy when you begin your studies. When you do have questions, ask targeted or specific ones not some vague or general question okay?
I wish us all success in our endeavors.

It's good that you've picked yourself back up from drhopeful's post. Note that he didn't wait around to make sure everything is 'safe' like you're doing now. He simply took the plunge, put in the hard work and backed it with God. Why not do the same? Instead of waiting for someone to give you permission on how and where to apply, follow your guts, re-take the GRE (this would go a long way to boost your profile), shoot out smoking hot pre-app contact letters to profs and never be comfortable until something good happens.

What do you think?

What's weird is Drhopeful keeps saying she is a woman but people on here keep referring to her as him. That's on a lighter note.

Anyways, I was expecting my TOEFL score since Tuesday but my account reads "scores not available" and this is exactly 12 days after taking the test. Should I be worried?

Naa fam, you didn't read all the posts. You didn't even read any. You clicked the link that was posted on the USA student visa thread and it led you here. That's pretty disingenuous if you ask me. Most of the information you require is already on the first page or so. Take some time to glean through. It will help.
