Chapter 24

Feeling the sun on her face made Sam realise that she had fallen asleep.
The sound of the waves hitting the sand was very hypnotic, she could listen to it all day, if she was in a place like this, she thought.

The sun was still shining and the sea was still as blue green as ever, why hadn't she come her for a holiday before.

It was soo nice, the dolphins were still trying to catch her attention, she would go over and swim with them later she thought .

The water Michael had given her earlier had helped quench her thirst, but right now she was hungry, if only those waiters would come over.
They always studiously avoided her and it was irritating her.

She was about to get up and go look for Michael, when she heard a child laughing excitedly near the dolphins.
The little girl was wearing a yellow dress, she turned and smiled when she noticed Sam looking at her.

That child is going too close to the water, she thought.

She was definitely trying to get up when Michael appeared.

'Sam you can’t move, you might hurt yourself’ as he put a hand on her shoulder.

‘Michael that child needs help, she is too close to the water’

Michael looked over to where the girl was and looked back at Sam

‘Do you regret our decision not to have children Sam’ he asked her his eyes sad.

‘Of course not Michael, we both knew that our child would be born with life changing defects, we both came to the same conclusion’

‘We could have adopted’ Sam said.

She paused, she had just said, could have, instead of we can adopt.

‘Michael where am I?’ she asked him.

‘Where do you think’ he said, as he looked towards the mainland.

The child’s laughter broke into their conversation.

'You were once that child Sam, abandoned and alone. Help that girl to get a better earlier start in life than you had.' he implored.

'It’s soo peaceful here Michael, I just want to sleep and relax’ Sam said.

‘Well it’s not meant for you, we are full at the moment. You and the girl need to get out of here.'
‘Remi is a good guy you know. Blind but he is ok’ rolling his eyes.
‘For goodness sake how could he not know it was you!!’

‘I did change my voice and used a visual, that always tricks the layman’ she chuckled mischievously.

'She isn’t yours' he said, as he looked towards the girl.
'But she is going to rely and need you. Please Help her out.’ he said, as he turned around.

'I am going to make you some fish and then we need to get you out of here Miss.’ He said as he walked away.

If Micheal doesn't watch it, I'll give him a very slow and peaceful death.....after death.

Sam has to come back for sure, but she cant just earn a 100% happy ending no, I refuse. Either Mercy's pregnancy should be Remi's only child, with Sam being barren OR, they rescue Sam alive then she dies.

Bayo, after Micheal its you .

Micheal is a wise man, and he's not selfish.

He knows Sam doesn't belong there. Something similar happened to my Mum.

Chapter 25

dedicated to adetomdx Happy Birthday

Dr Vince Tanaka the Head of the Trauma Unit at Sakakibara Hosiptal, wished that it was the coffee stand in the canteen he was going to. Instead he went to the chart stand and looked over the charts of the patients he needed to review.
He was tired, he had slept at the hospital for two nights in a row, due to the attack, his hospital had been operating at full capacity. That meant more staff and more paper work, he sighed to himself.

They had been extraordinarily busy, people had been pulled off leave and came in to do the long shifts needed after such a catastrophic event.
All the incoming victims they had received had been identified save two.
One was now in the morgue and the other one was in a coma.

The lady in bed 10 had still not been identified, even though he had seen a man sitting with her twice, whenever he got to the room, to ask the man questions he had gone.
He asked one of the nurses to keep an eye out the next time the man visited.
She had given him a strange look, no one had been in there to see the woman she told him since she had arrived. The other nurses attested to that fact as well.
Vince knew what he saw and he was sure he had seen the same man there twice, sighing as he ran his hands through his hair.

He took her chart and went back to her bed, there were two beds in the room, the occupant of the other bed had passed away that morning, as a result of the trauma suffered from the attack.

When he thought about it, this was the last surviving victim that had been transferred to their hospital for treatment. He really hoped she made it, if only he knew her name.

He would be able to talk to her, but all he said was how are you today as he got on with the job of checking her vitals.
Even though she was in a coma, her vitals were good, but her injuries were very severe.

He sighed walked out and moved on to the next patient.

Remi looked at the text again sh!t, he thought.
Mercy I am away at the moment, can I call you shortly? He typed into whatsapp.
She wasn’t online so she would probably get it later, but he also decided to send her the same message by text.
He put his phone away and followed the rest of the group into the hospital, just like the other hospitals they had visited this one was bustling with people.

Yomi, walked up to the receptionist and gave her the name of the person who had called to tell them they might have a match to Sam, she directed them to the mortuary.

They all stopped when they heard the word mortuary and looked at each other.

Remi’s heart skipped a beat at the announcement, the receptionist must have said that soo many times she did not realise the effect it had on people.
For Remi he had received two pieces of potentially life altering news in one the same day.
They were all in quiet contemplation as they walked down the corridor, the stopped in the hallway as Yomi went in to identify the body.

Time stood still for everyone, Bayo stood on his own. David and Christopher stood together talking.
Remi was on his own.
He wondered how he would feel when Yomi came out, it was one the longest waits he had to endure.

Fifteen minutes late Yomi came out. His face was sombre.
‘It’s not her.’ He said, quietly.

The sigh of relief made by all of them was audible in the room.
However, there was still one question on everyone’s mind.

Where was she?

They decided to go back to their hotel room, as they walked to the lift to take them to the car park.

The lift opened, a doctor looking over charts was the sole occupant, he nodded to them as they got in. Well they did look an odd group, Remi thought to himself.
Four big black guys with a one Japanese guy amongst them.
They continued talking about the hospitals they should visit next, they would have to go back to all of them again and ask for Sam.

‘Hmm, Hi, sorry to intrude. But I wonder if you can help me’ the doctor turned to them.

‘Hi, I am Vince Tanaka, I am the head of the Trauma department’.

‘Your community here is quite small and in one way or the other you guys know each other, we have a lady here that I have been trying to identify.’ He looked at them earnestly.

No one has come forward to ask for her, it seems as if no one is looking for her. She is the only person left who we took in from the attack who has not been identified.’

‘I have seen a man sitting with her, but anytime I go to ask him her name he’s gone and the nurses have never seen him, they think I am crazy.’

It was obvious to Remi, that Yomi had just gone very still, as if a chill had just entered the lift.

‘Can you describe the man’ Yomi said, as the other guys also fell silent.

‘He is very light he had an Arsenal football shirt on, on both occasions and he looked tall’ the Doctor said.

‘Do you know him? The Doctor asked

‘Yes ‘ Yomi said, and nothing more.

The Doctor was expecting Yomi to say something, but he didn’t.

‘Uhm ok, let me take you to her’ the Doctor said.

'None of the people sent to this hospital made it, which is why I hoped she would when I saw the man watching over her.
It looked like he was.'

Remi found the phrase the doctor had used strange, Doctors were meant to believe in science not guardian angels.

The excitement amongst them was palpable in the quick long strides they took to follow the Doctor.

They walked into the room and they were met with a woman whose head was swathed in bandages.

Her arms had all kinds of tubes hanging off her.

Yomi went over to her and checked her wrist, the scar resulting from her opening a tin of corned beef the wrong way was there.

‘It’s Sam’ he said.

‘Let’s take her home’ his voice shaking but controlled.

They had found her and it was at that precise moment that all hell broke loose on the machines.

Chapter 26

Dr Tanaka moved swiftly to the machines to see what was going on, as he touched Sam’s pulse on her wrist.
Even though he wasn't a medical Doctor, Remi noticed that Dr Tanaka looked worried and tense.

Please, please don’t let Sam follow the same path the others had, Remi thought as he remembered the Dr’s words earlier.
‘Get me a crash cart in here stat’ Dr Tanaka shouted.

One of the nurses came running in through the door, to assist him with monitoring Sam’s vitals.

‘Page the head of Cardio to get here now’ the Doctor said while checking the monitors.
The machines were making warning noises, red lights flashing all over the place.

The second nurse who came in said, 'BR is dropping. Heart rate is dropping'. Watching the monitors, hoping and waiting for something to improve on the numbers she was looking at.

Another nurse came in with the crash cart and quickly pulled the defibrillator out of its packaging.

Dr Tanaka was about to put the put the defibrillator on Sam when he turned the nurse.

‘Get them out of here now’ pointing to the men in the room.
.
The nurse led them out into the seating area, her eyes were tense and weary.

The door had a window on the upper part of the door, which enabled Yomi and Remi to see what was going on. Bayo, couldn’t take it and went to sit by himself in the middle of the room.

The atmosphere had gone from hope to despair in the space of one hour, it was tense and the only thing holding all of them together was hope.

In Sam’s room Dr Tanaka placed the defibrillator on Sam’s chest, it jerked her up then back down, like a rag doll, the charge rushing through her to bring her heart to life.

‘Give me two hundred, clear’ Dr Tanaka said.

They could see on the machines the lines were still flat, nothing had moved.

‘Give me three hundred clear’

Remi could see the look the passed between the nurse and the doctor from the window.

This was real life, not the drama shows he watched sporadically when he couldn't sleep at night.
He had watched enough of them to know after two attempts with no response, it wasn't a good sign.

‘Give me five hundred clear.’ Dr Tanaka said.

Remi could not take it any-more and moved away from the door and started pacing the room, his eyes were pricking with the tears welling in his eyes.

Yomi stood by the door as if mesmerised by what was going on.

The head of Cardio arrived went into the room and told Yomi to move away from the door and the window.

One of the nurses came out to tell Yomi to move away from the door and window, but not before he saw them drop the defibrillator.
He moved and went to sit opposite Bayo, he wanted to be alone.

Dr Tanaka had hoped that the defibrillator would have worked.
‘Come on Sam’ he kept muttering
‘Come on’
‘Come on Sam’ he whispered.
‘Don’t make that man’s watching be for nothing’ he pleaded.

He threw the defibrillator to the ground and started on CPR.
‘One, two, three …thirty’

He tried again, until the head of Cardio told him to stop. She wasn’t coming back.
‘Vince, you need to call the time of death’ the head of Cardio told him, understanding in her eyes.

Samantha Nkechi Olaofe nee Ojukwu was declared dead at 22.14 Japan time 14.14 Lagos time.
Dr Tanaka pulled off his gloves to go and tell her family that she was gone.
