The real reason is This:
2019 is around the corner. They want to reduce our access to social the media and the explosive difference it will definitely make before and during the election .
Thier are other viable and vibrant options before the FG on the creation of more revenues. This is outrageous in all ramification.

If you are truly bent on lending a helping to new entrants, just reduce their tax or whatever fees they pay to NCC and FG, rather than the already overburdened populace bearing the cushion of someone's private business.

they want to please TY Danjuma(their paddy) the chairman of NTEL. Etisalat came in many years after MTN and AIRTEL, yet they face the challenge. Now they are rubbing shoulders. If he can't compete with others with all his money, he should give up. Let federal govt re-privatized NITEL or dash it to a Chinese company. Or maybe Danjuma bribed them.

He definitely did.

Either him or any of the other owners of the smaller telecommunication companies.

If the companies cannot compete then they should quit and start some other business. I don't see the sense in punishing over 100 million people just so that four or five weak companies can survive.

I am so pissed right now.
Re: Why NCC Directed Big Telcos To Increase Data Tariffs – official by frisky2good(m): 9:55am On Nov 30, 2016
When Glo wanted to enter the market, MTN and Econet were doing anyhow. Glo came up with cheaper rates and they are big now. When Etisalat wanted to come in, they used the same strategy. Why will I patronize a small company if the rates are the same? I will prefer to stick to my swift 4g of 30GB @ 7000 Naira than buy a new modem and switch to another network for the same amount. Every company should have a strategy. If the small players don't have survival strategy then why the f*ck did they bid for license? This all comes down to incompetence on the part of the government. Leave companies alone to do as they like. NCC should just ensure they offer quality services.

How will the useless small companies even try to compete with others like Airtel and MTN? It doesnt even make any sense.

And they were not even helping their case before, their charging was too exorbitant, selling ordinary 2.5gig for 4000, how will they survive in a country suffering recession and unemployment and all other sorts of hardship. Its just too bad that black people don't have the spirit of revolution in them if not this nonsense would not have happened. Nigerians will only complain and whine and insult politicians but still pay the expensive charges at the end of the day.

I'm suspecting the usual political suspects are behind the new entrants so the NCC wants to make things rosy for them to our detriment.

This was solely an Idea carved by the CBN to steal from the poor to fund a government that lacks any sensible direction and empathy for the pains of the ordinary Nigerian. They don't even care to know if at present we're Able to afford airtime or we can even afford when the increases come to full effect tomorrow.

Already in my area, for almost a month now many card vendors have increase #10 on every denomination of card you buy.

The whole propaganda is now backed by NCC as they are shamelessly crying on behalf of the small Telcoms, a story for the birds. When every wise Nigerian know that this government only aim is to capitalise on the sweat of the under paid masses, they are not worried about increasing salaries but ways to tap from our pockets by hook or by crook.

Who's voice really need to be heard in this time of hardship and recession? Is it that of the good people of Nigeria or the Useless small Telcom companies many Nigerians don't even know a thing about?

As an individual i usually don't speak against people in authority but i feel this Buhari government isn't taking proper advice
First we all know you want to increase revenue but why do that at the expense of depriving individuals access to knowledge(in case you dont know, internet has the potential to reduce illiteracy rate over time, at least individuals considered illiterates can learn about few things about through social media.
secondly this policy might slightly threaten mobile money platforms and other financial inclusion strategy.
Where in the world does government increase tax rates during recession
Does new companies should go and hire Mckinsey and BCG to help them navigate their pricing problems.

Must everyone be a data provider? If one market is saturated and you dont have a competitive edge to break in, find something else to do.

Let them revert back to per minute calls na..

Tah! If i hear Atiku, that old cargo. I know he would be thinking of contesting in 2019. And to imagine some of my colleagues are saying atiku is better than Buhari. Spits out! None is better than the other . All these old politicians should just retire and let young, vibrant, intelligent and sensible people lead this country.
Re: Why NCC Directed Big Telcos To Increase Data Tariffs – official by joshikenna1(m): 10:08am On Nov 30, 2016
Whatever made them increase the price of data was greatly contributed by MTN and probably Airtel. Why?

According to recent subscription statistics released by NCC, MTN has been losing data subscribers at a constant rate while Glo has been gaining massive new data subscribers on their network beceof their extra cheap data. MTN, Airtel and Etisalat and the majority of the smaller ISPs could not compete and therefore had to file complaints to NCC, lobbying them to initiate this new directive.

If you've noticed, both MTN and Airtel have been strongly informing their customers of the new NCC directive but Glo has refused to comment as they are not happy with this directive. why?

This is why. Glo's strong point has always been their cheap data. They even call themselves the 'grandmasters of data'. But unfortunately the quality of their network cannot compete with that of MTN. But still Nigerians have preferred Glo's cheap data with their fair network quality. If this new data floor price (minimum price every network must sell data) is implemented by NCC, Glo will lose hugely. Just take a scenario where both MTN and Glo are both offering #1000 for 1gb, more people will opt for MTN because of their quality network and Glo will wither in the long run.

What NCC wants in essence is 'completion in quality of network' and not completion for cheapest data. They want to level the playing field. Though, this was influenced by MTN and others.

On my part, I completely disagree with this move on NCC's part. They should leave the competition to the network operators. Afterall not everyone will use Glo as some people prefer quality over quantity and others prefer quantity over quality. It's a choice Nigerians should make not NCC. That's why it's called 'competition'

There needs to be a regulation to what telcos charge for data, I get where NCC are coming from, they claim they want to give small and new companies a chance to operate and still make profit.

So let's say they put the standard at N1,500 for 1gb. It would create a healthy competition, but then what stops MTN and other big companies from giving out bonus? They are capable of doing that and still make profit. So let's say NCC put N1,500 for 1gb, MTN can decide to give double bonus so at the end N1,500 still gives 2gb.. so how are the small companies NCC claim they are trying to encourage survive? NCC need to have a rentink

They have done it before. They will tell d big telcos to cut down on their bonus. Remember mtn used to do some crazy promos? they cautioned them.

For me, they are trying to make money for d govt.
