Maybe soon doctors, nurses, teachers, lectures, traders, lawyers will all start carrying arms to work too.Since they suffer attack by unruly motorists why not add some strike force from the police or army or civil defence to their team when on duty instead of giving them arms.

It's a pity a number of these officials die in active service but then allowing them to carry arms will further compound the problem as commercial drivers too will carry arms in case things become a bit heated when with the Marshal.
I have a number of them as friends but their aim is to generate revenue and not to check cars, they only stop rickety buses to collect the 200 naira and that's all. Even when then the bus is overloaded and non road worthy.
Imagine being accused of an offence for wearing sunshades because you have Apollo, after they can't find anything to charge you with

It's unfortunate that people have been killed doing their jobs but what of the farmers who have been slaughtered in the North and Middle Belt?

Why is their no response from this government on this matter...

Why is a midget in Kaduna talking about paying off criminals to murder Nigerian citizens?

I don't understand why we Nigerians will know d truth and refuse to say it. According to their boss, He said about 70 personnel were lost ONLY IN 2016 due to drivers' recklessness and wickedness.
Are these 70 personnel animals? Imagine the psychological trauma their families will be undergoing for loosing their loved ones, or may be their breadwinner.
I also had a friend who happened to be one of the 70 lost officers of FRSC.
Do we expect their boss or the FG to fold their arms while these people keep dieing like fouls?
It's we Nigerians (motorists) that need to check ourselves and do the right thing.

THE Federal Government has approved arms-bearing for the men and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps following upsurge in violent attacks and killing of some of its operatives during legitimate duties.

This is coming on the sad revelation that the Corps has lost over 70 of its personnel in 2016 alone as a result of violent attacks by motorists at the course of duties on highways.

Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, made this known on Friday in Abuja at the end of year management strategy session as a way to assess the Corps stewardship as well as ensuring effective service delivery.

He noted that the FRSC Establishment Act gives power to the corps to bear arms and that the Federal Government had earlier approved that, with about 5,000 personnel already undergoing training on firearms.

The Federal Government has however approved the recruitment of about 450 personnel to beef up the operational capacity of FRSC in prompt rescue operations and enforcement drive.

Oyeyemi said: “The Act gives power to the Corps to bear arms and 5,000 of our personnel have been trained. We are just waiting for the validation of the earlier approval.

“Sadly, within the one year, we have lost 70 personnel. It is sad to note that some killing and maiming of operatives, including one from a sister agency in close collaboration with the Corps were in the course of official duties.

“A recent occurrence was the happening in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State where a motorist ran into the Mobile Court in session, killing three operatives almost instantly while a Civil Defence operative died later as a result of injuries sustained in the dastardly act.

He, however, declared that the Corps would not give up, ensuring that the mandate of making Nigerian highways safer is achieved.

The Corps Marshal said he had since last year raised the alarm that some Nigerian motorists were becoming unusually violent, following rising cases of wilful killings of some of the Corps’ operatives on official duties.

He also revealed that at the end of week 47 of 2016, road crashes claimed the lives of 4,005 persons in Nigeria from 7,657 crashes as recorded by the Corps.

He, however, pointed out that the Corps has recorded 15 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes and 25 per cent in fatality rate, during the third quarter of 2016, saying this was an indication that the Corps is making progress in the campaigns.

He said: “For instance, as at September this year, we have achieved 77.19 per cent of the expectation in RTC reduction while 83.33 per cent was archived in respect of fatality rate. We will not only keep momentum but further accelerate achievement of goals,” he said.

He also disclosed that the Corps has sacked 66 personnel (10 officers and 56 marshals) on issues bothering on indiscipline, particularly inducement of operatives by motorists to evade arrest and outright extortion by operatives.

Oyeyemi added that 33 other personnel were had their ranks reduced or lost of seniority as part of disciplinary action on them.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engineer Babachir Lawal, reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government in supporting FRSC in achieving its mandate of making Nigerian roads safe for the citizens.

He said the government has accordingly approved the recruitment of 4350 personnel to boost the operational capacity of the Corps.

Lawal who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs, Ambassador Olukunle Gbangbose, said the Federal Government would ensure that FRSC is properly equipped for effective service delivery while calling on the top management of the Corps to begin to think out of the box in addressing challenges faced.

That is why you need a traffic police officer to work with you. You are not a crime fighting squad. So, how many FRSC officers have been killed while checking drivers license? Howmany havebbeen shot on aczive duty? How many die on active duty compared to police men? The moment you start carrying guns, that is the moment you become marked by criminal road users.
Guns would not save you, guns would mark you as a potential enemy.
If not for the fact that naija is a jagajaga country, simply taking down the car number and color you could report to the police and they take up the mater from their. But naija government like to solve problem from bottom up. They build a house before buying the land on which the house would sit

Oga, FRSC is not traffic police. They are not there to bust crimes or look for criminals using our roads. Plus most officers do not face threat by fire arms. Most that die were struck down during car chase. They do not face any threat that would cause them to carry arms. Worse case, pepper spray and tasser. NOT Guns.
So you are saying they should carry guns so as to shoot anyone that doesn't stop for search or?

My people perish for lack of knowledge. FRSC establishment act 2007 already empowered them to bear arms. You can find this in section 19 of the FRSC Establishment act 2007

If only u know what FRSC personnels pass through on the road, u will be the ones to recommend arms bearing for them.

Take it or leave it, those making unguarded comments are those guilty of hitting, manhandling, insulting or even hitting FRSC officials on the road
Re: FRSC Now To Bear Firearms – Oyeyemi by optimusprime2(m): 3:19pm On Dec 03, 2016
ShootToKill:
These Frsc guys will become uncivil animals if allowed to bear arms. They are already powerful enough.

Their primary job is to check if you have safety tools like Caution sign, Fire extinguisher, working trafficator lights, Brake lights. etc.

Now that they'll bear arms, expect them to start asking you for custom papers that has no business with them. Also expect more extra-judicial killings of motorists.

I'll suggest that they should bear arms, rather when they set up check points, an armed policeman should be with them.

Man o war and peace corps (that haven't been fully rationalized) are already asking for arms. The country is a jungle.
I really think they ought to bear arms, infact their cause has more priority & security urgency as compared to the Civil defence corps.
Why you may ask?
They do alot of highway patrols which exposes them to high risks such as
1-Bumping into heavily armed Highway robbers, escaping highway robbers or Highway Robberies in progress... many times they are forced to flee from such dangers because they are unarmed ( what a pity as they are supposed to be law enforcement officials)
2- Bumping into armed Kidnappers/Ritualists on highways *as stated above*
3- with the state of Nigerias insecurity, what happens if they cross paths with one of the insurgents on a lonely federal highway while on duty patrol e.g Boko Haram motorcade or Fulani Herdsmen interception... what do you want them to dohuh Runhuh As law enforcement officials how are they even contributing to National security on such occasionshuh
4- Many instances Road Safety corps patrol border highways and come across illegal smuggling activities as uniformed people, what sort of authority can they command for acknowledgment on such occasions... na with mouth??

I truly understand how many of them get killed in service and really I think they need to be Heavily armed and heavily trained. Afterall they are law enforcement officials technically.
As the saying goes; "If you must a eat a frog, eat a fat one".

I personally experienced some Road safety officials fleeing the scene of a Highway robbery in progress once as a youth corper.... just because they were unarmed- personally, I think they should even be given Machine guns (M-4 rifles) as standard issue alongside grenades and they should be given bullet proof patrol cars as well.

Those guys face very High risks and I really admire their service despite these risks.

I don't believe arming the FRSC is the best. Why not equip them with non-lethals, such as Mace or Tazers.
