The attack in the Maiduguri killed both the girls and one other person and left another 18 injured.

Same to me that leg doesn't look bad enough for amputation. Maybe the story is put to attract sympathy and deter criticism and later it would be cited as a great miracle that his leg which was to be amputated got healed through his powers.
