Informative thread. For the fact that my first degree is not from Nigeria and I also have more than 50 certificates outside Nigeria to the ones in Nigeria. I still see every reason to become an Entrepreneur all over again.

At some points, I was submitting CVs to different places and countries, got a job in Republic of Benin few months ago, the management was not able to pay for a month salary, then I came back to my country. By 2017, I want to go into fashion designing despite the fact that I can paint houses and buildings.

Both males and females are open to learning a handiwork, its very germane. I can never marry a lady who does not have a handiwork or plenty of it but solely relies on her paper qualifications. Who does that this day?

It's hightime we started building up our entrepreneurial skills and enterprise spirit to succeed in Nigeria and beyond. Our unborn children should be taught and exposed to vocational skills, business acquisition, making giant leaders out of them and business tycoons.

I want us to embrace hard work, skill-sets, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and vocational thirst for skills and acquisition.

Thank you all.
Well said,Everybody want to get employed, whats wrong about becoming your own Boss

Can someone please tell these third world countries that the world has moved on from paper certification to ability and professionalism
Masters degree?
Dude go and teach that's all that paper will qualify you for...
As a graduate...do not be in a rush....chase these things in this particular order.

1. God- without him you are nobody
2. Skill - better yourself PRACTICALLY in your field. Seek to learn from everywhere...not to be QUALIFIED but to KNOW and be relevant in the field.
3. Money- while you are waiting...baba go and learn money...jt is a course on its own entirely...its a rigorous course....its not about cash, its about creating wealth....

But sofar....all I see is...

1. Masters degree-
2. More masters degree-
3. phd-

And all those land you in the classroom as long as you READ with the target of paper certification you SHALL be in the classroom....

Only other option is to find connection, get into the civil service , look for pipe and start siphoning funds.....

I beg to differ. Maybe they don't know how to position themselves well for employment opportunities. Except if their village people are after them, foreign trained graduates have a better edge than locally educated ones in any corporate setting and no matter their grade. Some other things may be involved here.

Same thing happened to me. I did my masters in the UK and after 3 years of waiting doing jobs of 30-40k per month. I decided to go into Business and now I can tell you I make that salary in just one week. But I still pray I get a better paying job to do alongside the business and make more money for myself.

The moral of the story is that Nigeria of today is moving away from Paper qualification to what service can you offer me and I pay you in return. We don't value education in this country so there is no use studying abroad or getting higher educational degrees and returning back to Nigeria.

To me a foreign certificate isn't an advantage except you're attending a very top university or a school well recognized in a particular area.

Most students are after this certificate issue. Most students operate with the "read to pass" mentality. You read to pass and after the exam what you learnt is gone com'on, that means you just have a certificate to prove you went to school and not that you're a professional.

Therefore don't come here and give excuse on not finding a job. This world is a customer driven economy so find your way.

Employment in the Uk requires Visa and rights to work in the UK, so you can guess why that wont work even if the are the best in their class.
They can also apply for international Jobs as the UK cert is recognized world wide.I think who ever wrote the original article blew it outta proportion.

What Nigeria needs now is for all these people that got a m.sc or mba abroad to get creative based on their exposure. You cant stay in uk, u.s, canada for at least a year and say you didn't pick up something that can better the life of Nigerians. They should be the ones creating employment. I know some people will argue that they don't have capital to set up a business. If u can spend 6 million to get a m.sc or mba, you can also source for 2 or 3 million naira to better your life and that of Nigerians.

God will take control
Anybody who studied outside Nigeria and is jobless needs he's brain checked... There are over 1001 ways to be self employed while outside the country and once you dive into any returning to Nigeria to set up something shouldn't be hard. Why look for job when you can create one

[s]says who? Do you want to compare certificates from Birmingham with Harvard, UCL, MIT, UT etc? Naah, I beg to disagree. This is just a case of one out of hundred and Birmingham is just an upgrade on some of the Unis here if not on par, thus, it doesn't seem a valid argument. Make no mistake about it, foreign certificates; especially from ivy league schools in the UK, US and Canada are far better and secure job easily in Nigeria. [/s]

Another Ignorant Fellow on the verge of wasting millions of Naira!!

Guy - The possibility of relocating permanently should be the reason for travelling abroad to obtain a foreign degree. If you think a Foreign Certificate still has the same prestige in Nigeria as before, you are on a loooooooong thing.

I do not agree with you on that last paragraphs,Take the Uk as a case sturdy, they are more interested in waht you can do ratehr than your degree,Having that in mind, you are rated higher if you have a degree to back waht you are doing. But this brings back that fact that in the UK they go to school really early.U start with a low paying job to gain experience and you learn on teh JOB,Now we do not have that in Nigeria.
Besides, there are loads of other courses and training you undertake while in JOB and this is backed by training and development laws.

I have to agree with you on this one,Having a foreign degree should not be put in per as having an advantage over your peer in Nigeria rather seen as self development and positioning for the international JOB market.

The academic education system in practice (worldwide) - worst of all Nigeria - and a certificate gain from it only confers the holder a bragging right of having information within average of one's course of study - it never confers knowledge. This is why unemployment and by extension unproductivity is the order of the day/has always been/and will continue to be. In fact, the best means one can gloss his ignorance is through acquisition of a paper certificate and mastery of the nation's lingua franca. This academic educational setting in practice (specifically the tertiary level) is a scam - virtual and auditory systems of learning has done more bad than good to the world at large.

Knowledge which is the main thing doesn't really requires one to spend all his life cramming some irrelevant notes. One gains more through hands-on learning backed by self-continuous read/write education. Here you learn the relevant and updated things in your course of study and other areas of studies unrelated to your pursuit, while at the same time earn as you go (in most cases).

In summary, the world at large really need to do away with virtual and auditory systems of learning and embrace hands-on learning system. Hands-on learning system confers one instant knowledge, and its less rigorous and saves time and money.

Good choice, when you finish learning you can add the experience you already have in Biz as a finishing touch and you can do your own fasion Biz diff from everyone else. This is called Biz Module.

True, this is the reason most youth brake away from Nigeria and seek to find themselves somewhere else be it abroad or different region.I took that decision after my NYSC to go to the Uk and I'm damn glad I did when I did then.

The essence of Masters should never be about coming back for higher pay it should be because you are interested in a certain field and want to pursue to a higher degree for more knowledge, i don't have master not sure if i even intend to but i always read their books and all to keep updated. though if you want to work in Google and some top IT (PHD and Masters is good requirement).
