Hello samyfreshsmooth welcome to the club.
Drinks on the house for you grin

I know the club activities have been a bit slow since Sam is slightly incapacitated at the moment.

Update will be Tuesday.

In the meantime please drink and enjoy the fantastic popcorn provided by Adesina12.

However seating arrangements might be a bit fraught.

The club is split each side vying for Remi’s attention.

I leave you to decide. But bear with me. ..

But thank you for stopping and commenting, very nice cheesy

Happy Boxing Day....

Chapter 35

Remi sat back in his seat and watched as the New York lights got dimmer as the plane continued on its ascent for the flight back to Lagos. He really had a lot of thinking to do as he stared at the clouds, without a doubt he wanted to be with Sam. But he realised the chances of her wanting to be with him now that Mercy was on the scene looked negligible and almost impossible.

It was obvious to the two of them that there was something between them, but whether it would happen was anyone’s guess. Sam had been insistent on him looking after Mercy and doing the right thing.

‘But what was the right thing?’ he thought to himself. Mercy had made it crystal clear that she was not interested in marrying him, she wouldn’t do it for the child either. There was no point of going into a marriage of convenience if one party so was vehemently against it. It would also have been a sham marriage, one of them would eventually file for divorce once the child was born. If he had to lay odds on it, that person would most probably be him.

The other thing that troubled him on a very strange male base level was the fact that Mercy could still be sleeping with other men while his baby was growing in her. He groaned at the thought and put his head in his hands, trying to get rid of that image from his head.

Sam had not come out to say that she wouldn’t talk to him anymore, but she just insisted they take each day as it comes. She was leaving the hospital that week and they decided they would see how things panned out when she got back to Nigeria.

The air hostess came over, ‘would you like a drink, Sir?’ She asked him, while gazing at him with interest.

‘Can I have a brandy please?’ he asked, while he pulled the tray from the back of the seat in front of him.

She handed him his drink of brandy and ice and moved on to the next passenger.

His first point of call when he landed was to go and see Mercy, he had tried calling her after her email, but she had sent him a text back that she was with her boyfriend so could not talk to him.

Was that a real Boyfriend or her Sugar Daddy, he thought to himself.

The whole thing was ridiculous he thought, how in God’s name had he managed to get into such a tangled web? He really wished he could take the baby out and incubate it out of Mercy’s womb.

But the question he could not answer was, why was he so attached to this baby? He had never been the broody type, men never were. But something about this child had stopped him in his tracks. It was like the baby already had him wound round its little finger.

He pulled himself out of his thoughts and concentrated on the drive to Mercy’s flat.

The email she had sent still sent shockwaves through him. Why wouldn’t a woman want to keep her own child? It just didn’t sound right.
The other thing that was also going through his mind that made his heart race every time he thought about it, would Mercy take very good care of herself to ensure that the baby was healthy?

That was the question going through Remi’s mind when he knocked on Mercy’s door.

Mercy opened the door after his third round of knocks on the door.

She finally opened the door, she was wearing jeans and a pink t-shirt, her make-up and hair in place. Any other time he would have commented that she looked flawless, he was not in the mood to dole out compliments today.

He had to admit that she looked really well for a pregnant lady and she hadn’t started showing yet.

‘Hello Remi come in.’ She said, as she opened the door further for him to come into her home.

‘Mercy what’s the meaning of the email you sent me’, Remi burst out, without even saying hello to her.

‘Remi, I meant everything I said in there, you want the baby you look after it. I don’t want it. I don’t know what came over me in the first place to tell you about it as I would normally have taken care of it.’ Mercy replied, as she walked into her living room.

Remi blanched at the thought, how many abortions had she done?

‘But how can you just give up your motherly duties, it is not natural.’ he said, as he paced in her living room.

‘Is it natural for men to abandon their children Remi?’ she asked him, staring at him scornfully.

‘Remi, there are loads of mothers out there who hate their children, but are forced to look after them. Is that natural? They beat the living daylights out of the kids or maltreat them. Is that right and natural? So please don’t tell me what is natural or unnatural’ she said to him as she sat down on a chair.

‘I will rent a place in a quiet location up north, as long as I have an internet connection, electricity and water I will be fine.’ She said.

‘What we do need to decide on though, is the hospital where I will give birth to the child. We also need to factor in how long it will take you to get there. As I mentioned you will be the one going home with the baby not me.’ She said, staring at him.

‘Would you like anything to drink Remi?’ she asked him as he continued pacing in her living room.

‘No thank you’ he said, as he stopped pacing.

‘I need to leave now, I will be back tomorrow Mercy.’ He said, as he walked out of her house.

He got into his car and decided it was about time to go and see his parents and face the music and their disapproval.

He sent a text message to his Mum that he was on his way to see them i.e. the two of them.

Remi pulled into his childhood home and sat in the car for a few minutes while he tried to gather his thoughts together and ready himself for the verbal assault he knew he was going to get from his parents.

He used his keys to open the door and heard them talking in the dining room.

‘Good evening Mum and Dad’ he said, as he walked into the room.

‘Kabo Remi,’ his Mum said, ‘how was your trip?’ she asked, as she paused eating.

His father looked up from the paper he was reading ‘Hello Remi, welcome home, how was your trip?’ as he went back to the paper he was reading.

‘It was fine thank you. I have something to discuss with the two you. ‘ He said, as he pulled out a chair near the table and sat on it facing his parents.

‘Mum, I am…ehm… I am having a baby.’ Remi said, as he stared at his hands on the table.

‘A baby?’ His Mother questioned.

‘Yes, Mum.’

‘Yes someone is pregnant with my child, I have done all the tests and the baby is mine. We had an accident and she got pregnant’ he told them.
‘What do you mean, you had an accident?’ she asked him, shock in her voice.

‘Who is this someone?’ she asked him.

‘A casual friend, we were never in a relationship.’ Remi said, as he looked up at his Mum.

‘Is it Sam?’ his mother asked, hope apparent in her voice.

Damn, he thought, if it had been Sam. She would be on her phone now organising a wedding he thought to himself.

‘No, Mother it is not Sam.’ He answered her question. He could see the disappointment in her eyes.

‘It is someone else Mum. Her name is Mercy. She is in a relationship with someone else.’ He said, as he sighed heavily.

‘So how does Sam fit into all of this because I am confused o. Kay, Baba Remi aren’t you going to join this conversation? I know you are pretending to be engrossed in your paper.’ She said, as she looked at him and nudged her husband in the ribs.

'I have made a mess of things Mum. I never believed things between myself and Mercy could ever become this complicated.’

‘I do like Sam my wish is to be with Sam if I had the chance. I want to take my chances with her and I saw her over the weekend Mum. I told her about the situation I currently find myself in. I don’t know how she took it as she hasn’t fully regained all of her memory.’ Remi said.

His Mother looked at him, consternation in her eyes.

‘Who is this girl that is pregnant for you Remi, do you like her?’ his Dad asked.

‘Not like Sam Dad, Mercy was meant to be a….’ he hesitated as he looked for the right word.

‘A friend with benefits? Is that what you were trying to say?’ his Father asked him.

Remi was shocked.

‘You kids need to know there is nothing new under the sun, nothing. All the things you are doing we have done before and our grandfathers before us. So remember that.’ His Father said, as his Father folded his newspaper and looked at him.

‘So what do you want to do?’ His Father asked him.
‘I want to listen to what you have to say, before I castigate you.’ His Father said.

Remi hesitated, he had been lucky to have great parents, even though he could tell they were not pleased with him right now, he knew they always had his back. Which made him wander what kind of parents Mercy had.

He decided to show his Father the email he had received from Mercy.

He could see the thunder appear on his Father’s face by the time he finished reading it. His Father stood up went to the fridge and poured himself a glass of cold water. He came back to the table and handed over Remi’s phone to his Mum, as expected she flew off the handle.

‘What! I can't believe what I am reading. What kind of woman is this? Remi where in God’s name did you find this woman?’ his Mother asked him.

Mercy was lucky she was not standing in front of his Mother at that moment he thought. She might have ended up receiving a slap from his Mother.

His Father calmed her down, but she started pacing the kitchen and rained all kinds of insults on Mercy’s head.

‘Bose, please calm down and let us talk this through with our son. The damage has been done, so let us find a way to resolve the situation we currently find ourselves in. Or rather Remi finds himself in’ His Father pleaded to his Mother.

‘Ok Remi, from what I can read this Mercy woman is serious. Is Sam aware of what is going on? Since it is obvious that this Mercy lady is not interested in you either.‘ His Father asked, looking at Remi.

‘Sam is aware of it Dad. Sam said I should concentrate on Mercy at the moment as she is the mother of my child. But Mercy is involved with someone else too, who she wants to hold on to.’ Remi sighed heavily.

‘Remi this is a complete mess you know’ his Mum told him.

‘How can she want to hold onto her man while carrying someone else’s child? I really don’t understand you kids of today o.’ His Mother added.

Tell me about it, he thought to himself. He had really managed to balls things up big time. But he was determined to go ahead with it, he wanted to keep the baby.

‘My first grandchild is going to be mired in a lot of controversy, but it seems that the child is determined to come as this Mercy girl could have terminated the pregnancy without you knowing. Why did she tell you anyway, was she trying to blackmail you?’ His Mother asked him.

She was about to go into another bout of questioning when his Father interrupted her.

‘Bose, now is not the time for if, why and what could have been. We need to start thinking about what Remi is going to do. More along the lines of how is he going to look after a new born on his own.’ His Father said as he stared at him.

His Father the eternal pragmatist, got down to business and steered them and the conversation down the path of reality, as the enormity of the task Remi was embarking on finally sunk in.

His Mother reluctantly accepted the situation, she wasn’t happy, but she told Remi that she was happy that he had taken a stand and would look after his child.

‘Don’t worry Remi.’ his Mum said. ‘We will do what we can to help, but at the end of the day, that baby is your responsibility.’

‘If the baby is staying with you Remi, then you better get yourself ready for the arrival of your child. This Mercy woman seems serious, if she wants to visit her child she will have every right to visit. I will start looking around for help. You will need a full time live-in Nanny to help you as a single father.’

‘Leave it with me, I will help you find a Nanny as soon as possible.’ His Mother said, as she pulled her two phones out of her handbag and scrolled through her contacts.
