I just stumbled on this thread and wow it is really educative. I want to venture into fish farming and I want to use Benuwats trampauline for 2 4,000lt tanks in Abuja. The area I stay has pipe Bourne water, is this ok for fish farming because almost everyone has been talking of borehole water. I also hope to start with 1,000 juveniles of catfish and would like to know the quantity of feed required till they reach table size.

I have been reading some ebooks and visited a farm but I would be grateful if the poster (who appears to have a lot of hands on experience) to help out. Especially the consumption rate for 1000 juves so I will know what to prepare my budget. Thanks!

Hi everyone and masters, I have an issue here, my 8 weeks cat fish in a concrete pond have not been showing so much interest in eating.

I initially thought it was the water even though I constantly drain it slightly and refill little by little. And on saturdays I drain it down, not completely and refill.

In the past few days they have all been placing their heads in upright position and not showing so much interest in the food. Though some of them stomach looks like they ate.

The challenge i have is that the local feed i am giving them is a sinking feed, so I cannot tell if they eat beneath th.e water, but what was obtainable before, once i start feeding, they all come rushing down

I suspect they have a bacteria infection. However try giving them a little floating feed to check their response. Also if you can look closely at them, observe if there are whitish colourations on their bodies or if they have white whiskers.

Some had white coloration, i saw a dead one, whiskers and eyes already turned white.In total saw 3 dead fishes, two where at the base and one floating. I was advised by a friend into the business to drain the water to a low level and add 4 covers of bottled water formalin into a full big custard bucket with water. And i should sprinkle half container with salt in a small custard bowl and leave them for 3hours.

He advised i dont feed them till tomorrow morning. I am open to criticism if this is wrong.

I recently added dry almond leaves into the pond, i read it boosts their immune system...

From your explanation, the fishes have bacteria infection. The water you are using is the problem. What you should do is to drain the water to 1/4 of the pond and get aquaceril. Empty one pack and leave for 24 hrs. Afterwards drain the water and add another and leave for another 24hrs, slowly introduce feed, not too much. One the third day add another but make the pond water at half tank. Lemme know how it goes.

Please don't use formalin. It is too strong and will most definitely kill the fish. I'm talking from experience.

If you want to sell your first for 4months, 10days then you need to use 50% fish meal in 100KG 2 times, move to 45% 2times, 40% 2 times, 35% 2 times, 30% 4 times then move to 30% in 300KG to the end.

Which part of Abuja are you? You have to be careful of chlorine in pipe borne water for young fish. 350k could feed to table size of average 800grams. My farm is in Abj. You are free to visit us

Before I received the reply I already did the salt and formalin mix, I didnt give them food yesterday, waited till this morning by 11am. They rushed the food, and I observed some still have white whiskers and white patches on them. Do you suggest I still go ahead with the aquaceril or I should be patient.

Secondly after applying the aquaceril, are you saying they wont eat for 3days? Or what will be the feeding pattern whilst treating them?

What floating feed can you recommend and how frequently do I feed them?

Like I said earlier on melange is catfish don't get it twisted.. Its just that at every stage in catfish life has a name.. So at the stage of 300gramms to 500 gramms it is called melange from 600 to 1kg is calles table size..
