JUST IN: Commercial plane with 111 people on board hijacked, hijackers threaten to blow it up


Latest reports inform that a plane on an internal flight in Libya has been hijacked and forced to land in Malta with 118 people on board.

Two hijackers on board the state-owned Afriqiyah Airways plane have hand grenades and are threatening to blow up the aircraft, according to Malta state television.

It was gathered from local media in Malta that one of the hijackers said he was “pro-Gaddafi” and would release all passengers, but not the crew, if demands were accepted.

As of the time of compiling this report the hijackers have not stated their demands and no passengers have been seen leaving the Airbus A320.

However, the Maltese Prime Minister said negotiating teams were on standby, while the plane could be seen on the tarmac at Valletta surrounded by military vehicles.

The Malta airport authority said all emergency teams had been dispatched to the site of what it called an “unlawful interference” on the airport tarmac.

Libya has been in a state of chaos since the 2011 overthrow of Col Muammar Gaddafi left warring militias battling for control of different parts of the country.

Forces loyal to a fledgling national unity government recently took control of the coastal city of Sirte, which had been a bastion for the Islamic State group since June 2015.

Look at what happened today, the play that was hijacked where gaddafi's sympathiser and we should except more of such in the nearest future because lybians are not happy with the present situation in there country.

France honours former AU mission commander Okonkwo

France has conferred on the former Commander of the African Union (Peacekeeping) Mission in Sudan (AMIS), Nigerian Major General Festus Okechukwu Okonkwo the French National Order of Merit Award with rank of Commander for his contributions to peace in Sudan and Liberia.
In a citation read at the ceremony at the French Embassy in Abuja Sunday, French ambassador Yves Gandeul said the award recognises Gen.
Okonkwo's "prominent roles" in peacekeeping operations, especially in Liberia, under the Economic Community of West African States peacekeeping force (ECOMOG) between 1994 and 1996, which earned him the nickname 'hurricane' for his "outstanding professional and personal qualities".
The citation also recognised the Nigerian General's role during the ECOMIL and UNMIL operations in 2003 and 2004.
"Everybody can be proud of your action focused on the establishment of peace in a country torn apart by war.
Your success in achieving this was an indispensable step for the reconciliation of the warring factions and paved the way for the presidential elections held in Liberia at the end of last year," the Ambassador said.
He also said: "I could not forget the key role you prayed during the AMIS peacekeeping operation in Darfur as Commander of the entire force between 2005 and 2006.
These operational commands you had in Liberia and Sudan during peacekeeping and often peace enforcing operations contributed to your own prestige and that of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
" Gandeul noted that the contribution of Gen.
Okonkwo, now serving as Commander, Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army, had made him a "real expert in this type (peacekeeping and peace enforcement) of operations.
" The decoration, the Ambassador stated, "reflects your long and deep commitment during your various appointments for the service of the Nigerian Army and the over all Armed Forces.
" At the ceremony attended by senior military officers of the Nigerian Army, Gen.
Okonkwo said that from his experience, "the Darfur issue is complex.
The deployment of the AMIS really saved the situation with the men on the ground.
" The first batch of 500 Nigerian troops landed in Darfur, Sudan, in August 2005 amidst protest from the Sudanese government and militias believed to be loyal to it.
The Nigerian troops had to fight their way against the Sudanese- backed supporter of APC militia to deploy in the troubled Western region.
The AU currently has 7,000 troops in Darfur.
Gen.
Okonkwo said the high point of his tour of duty in Darfur was during the first deployment, when they had to deploy under fire.
But he regretted the death of four Nigerian troops in the peace efforts in Darfur, describing it as the low point in the area of operation.
"The low point of my tour of duty was at the time we lost our troops.
It was really very painful.
When you are commanding troops and you lose four soldiers in a row, you can't but reel in pains," he said.
The President of France, Jacques Chirac signed the decree for the award on 25 August 2005.
One of the highest award in the French decorating system for deserving military and civilian personnel, the French National Order of Merit Award was created by former French President Charles De Gaulle, in 1963.

Gambia crisis: Senegal troops 'on alert' if Jammeh stays on


Senegal's troops are on alert to intervene in The Gambia if President Yahya Jammeh refuses to step down next month, the regional bloc Ecowas says.
Mr Jammeh initially accepted defeat in the 1 December poll, but later said it was flawed.

There are new variants of that same Chinese IFV with "V" shaped bottom to protect personnel from the blast effect of I.E.D.

In my own opinion too I think the army is left behind when it comes to acquisition of hardware but on the other side the army has a tight budget considering they are the major player in the CION.

No news yet on the army air wing .

yes algeria bought more than 70 units of mi 24 V/D in the past , they upgraded only 40 or 42 into MK III super hind . and with the 42 mi 28 NE entring service , we will have a very good attack helicopter capacity
