As much as splitting will be just one step toward a better tomorrow for present day Nigerians, I am not unaware of the short term turmoil it may most likely bring, but if we don't we'll only be putting a bandage over a gunshot wound...leaving room for continuing decay.

1. Our population is going off the roof and there are no policies or measures to keep that in check. That alone comes with a truck load of economic, social, financial and even security issues that will surpass what we are currently experiencing. I hope we understand that our children and grandchildren will have do clean up mess or add to the pile. Sigh.

2. Nigeria was never one country before the British colonists in 1914 had the terrible idea to merge people of different religions, cultures, ethnicities, values and languages. Although the union had big dreams, we have proved beyond reasonable doubt the the Nigerian people are definitely not one people. Expect when it's time to bash Ghana or talk our deplorable economy.

3. The yorubas are united united under traditional monarchies (royal family rulership), the Igbos are mostly democratic (small clan leadership without voting) and the Hausas have leaders who are caliphs (They basically double as traditional and religious *muslim* leaders). These styles of leadership show how different we are in our core. The Hausa majority obviously see no point in separating religion from state and this stems from their Islamic religion and this should be an important factor for a supposed "secular Nigerian state".

The above reasons are why I think a split would reduce the burden trying to lead over diverse 200 million people with stark contrasting views and values to leading more homogeneous states. Mind you, I am by no means a Biafra sympathizer, neither am I Igbo. These are coming from a very logical place.

I have a question though...Why do you strongly oppose the idea of a peaceful dissolution (through diplomatic agreements and/or referendum) of the Nigerian state?

Sensible replies only. Abeg.

You are wise.

There is no basis for a united Nigeria, especially the structure we are running today.

Currently only the Hausas and Yorubas wish to continue as one nation given their historic religious and cultural ties. The rest of the country simply wants out.

It looks to easy, but why those two tribes want to hold on to every other person remains a mystery. By virtue of the last 100 years as a nation they have gained more than they contributed from our commonwealth that you would expect they would be self sustaining by now.

But no, they shiver at the thought of any form of Balkanization and will be the first to call for the head of anyone seeking Biafra or Niger Delta Republic.

I will repeat the Hausas and Yorubas together have what it takes to make a strong nation. We need to help them see this.

I have a strong feeling that "One Nigerianists" will ignore this thread like they have been doing in the past when direct questions are posed to them.

I often hear Northerners say they provide food and they can support themselves in that regard and it's Southerners who need them...I somewhat agree but that wouldn't have been the case if not for specialization where we have reach region focusing on what it does "best" in the nation. They also think they don't need Southerners to survive...I wonder why they persist on keeping the union. They should come and answer.

Ask yourself if the real solution is dissolving the nation..,?

If 100+ years is not enough for you to realize that we are only getting even more lost as a nation, I wonder what will work.

At least with a peaceful dissolution, each region can effectively focus on its pressing issues without having to consider a thousand and one other issues.

You can't set such differences apart not when our tribes and religions come before our nationality. They are foundational differences...you can't ignore them.

and no be say dem go allow other people drink and keep cup! If there was equity and fairplay in the affairs of the country,..I don't think any1 will be talking about a split!

Imagine how fulani is massacring ppl up and down and the country is v cool widit, making occassional whinning and screeching sounds.

Let another tribe try a far lesser misanthropy and watch how the country descends on them and try 2 wipe dem out of the face of the earth

1) how can north be providing food for the south when we still import a lot of things we eat.

2) how can the north be providing food to the south when there is mass starvation in the north and almajiris begging for food everywhere

The north food production is a lie and a myth that needs to end.

Probably.
But you can't deny the yams, beef, onions, peppers and tomatoes southerners often rely on Northern farmers for. Don't get me wrong, that's by no means all the food we need but a sizable quantity does come from the north enough to upset prices in the south during Ramadan or religious crisis.

Those things can all grow in the south and has been done by many farmers. Even here on nairaland, you see farmers in the south posting pictures of growing those crops. How did you think our ancestors survived?

I didn't say they can't grow in the south. I'm saying that it's a fair claim going by what we see happening today. I also said it's as a result of specialization. Southerners produce oil and is home to budding industrialization. You can be proud.

"...This immense country NIGERIA, is artificial, a forced union of three major and hundreds of minor ethnic groups
speaking different languages, observing different legal codes and loyal to different tribal groups.
Nigeria’s cure will start when the ahistorical boundary cavalierly drawn on a map by
Britain’s colonial masters dissolves. The more coherent constituent nations to
merge — composed largely of the Igbo in the southeast, the Yoruba in the southwest and the Hausa
and Fulani in the north — would be less burdened by the many rivalries that now hobble
the central government, and better positioned to govern themselves...." (FINANCIAL POST)

There will never be a united Nigeria as far as we have muslims killing christians...

Its simple...Nigeria is divided by many factors... the division is common amongst the average and low class citizens while the rich class seal every deal with money and stay happy and push the sufferings down to the poorest class citizens....

We will keep making these mistakes as far as we take our PVCs to booting centers to vote out of tribal reasons with a dead-hope of benefiting in the future and at the pooling centers..of which who gives the highest money gets the highest votes...

Kanu and IPOB (the most logical organisation in Africa) are now making people ask the neccesary questions about why nigeria must exist at all cost.

Only hungry zombies who have thrown away their brains and children of politicians will refuse to ask this very important question- 'If bloody Nigeria peacefully dissolves. Will heaven fall?"

Most people support one Nigerea because they believe it is an opportunity for their region to rob the oil producing regions of their natural resources.

If true federalism were instituted in Nigeria, ALL the problems we face today of quota system only when the north is disadvantaged, falsification of census results, bias in distribution of federal allocations and projects to primarily favor the Fulani states, creation of multiple unviable states and LGAs in far northern desert region just to use them as extra units for cornering the federation allocation money derived from other areas etc will almost completely disappear.

Nigerea does not need to breakup to have peace. We just need to practice true fiscal federalism and all the quarrels from cheating happening now will disappear.
