************************************************************************** TWELVE Paul sat across from Dara, watching intently. Her textbook was opened to a page she didn’t even look at. Exam starts Monday and reading which used to come naturally now seem difficult. She sighed and shifted uncomfortably in her chair. Somehow, she has come to like Mrs Ella Williams, she liked the relationship between her and her father, but in times like this, she felt bad for Mrs Jayeola, just a little. Usually, she snapped out of it in no time. But her visit with Tobi made her feel some real pity. “Dara,” Paul said gently, “we’ve been through this before. This woman can never love you like your mother. She is just using you to get your father back. You can see the difference between how she treated you and how your own mother has been treating you since you reunited.” “I know we’ve talked about it, but it’s just Tobi that I miss. You know he is my only brother.” “Who told you your mother can’t give you another baby brother?” Paul asked with a smile. “after all, she still looks hot and young. And don’t forget what grandma said; that it was Mrs Liz that sent your mum away from your dad when she had you. You know she was their neighbour and she liked your father, as per fine boy corper.” “You are not serious, naughty boy.” She flung her textbook at him and smiled. “I want my dad, mum, myself and Tobi to live together jor.” “So, are we still going to shoprite?” “Shoprite ke? I have exams on Monday. I have not read a thing! You are in your third semester, no exams for you. Abeg, let me read.” “Okay, give me your debit card, I will go.” He rose on his feet and stretched his body. “I have to go now.” She opened her wallet and brought out the card, “Don’t go beyond 30k.” She said with a frown. “Fuelling of the car n ko?” “Including fuelling.” *************************************************************** |

*************************************************************** Liz and Dr Deji spent the evening talking. She let him baby and coddle her. She let him pour her a glass of wine and even made her pepper soup. She let him hover over her like a mother hen. He even held her and let her cry on his shoulder. She told him everything she was going through. Never one with a loose tongue, but the pressure has been too much lately, especially with the way Darasimi has behaved the last two times they met. “My mother will decide that, and you are not.” She had told her when she complained about her revealing dresses. That had broken her. Otunba has finally moved his things from the house, even his car. The marriage was over. It had been a joke to begin with; she saw that now. Another of her many failures. Deji Abiola was her first ever boyfriend. They had planned to get married upon her graduation from the school of nursing. Then came the corper and his baby girl saga. After her mother left, the baby lost so much weight and became so sickly she almost died. Not able to watch like the other tenants, she had broken his door and brought out the girl one fateful day, and that was it. “Please be her mother.” Corper had pleaded, with tears in his eyes, baby in hand. It was a big decision for her, too much sacrifice, her mother had said. Consider your happiness, not the corper’s baby, her brother and sister told her. You can’t leave me now, Deji had cried. “I’m a failure, a nothing.” She sobbed. “You know you are not, you are a kind hearted, selfless woman taken for granted. You are a rare gem.” “Don’t patronize me.” She sobbed continuously. “Divorce him and marry me.” Dr Deji’s voice jolted her back to reality. She was not surprised at his ‘proposal’, just plain indifferent. Deji had married and settled abroad after his internship. Ten years later and two kids, a boy and a girl, his wife had been killed by a drunk driver. They had met again at Agbowo as she was about to open her car door, after Dara had turned her back on her and Tobi. Liz made a choked sound. Deji cast a glance at her. She looked away. “I can’t.” Her eyes welled with tears. “So, you would rather live alone?” “With Tobi.” She said. “I’m also not giving up on Darasimi, I believe she will come back home. I am still her mother and I want her to meet me there if she ever needs me.” Dr Deji moved closer to her on the couch, “I respect your decision at this moment, but I will not give up. I havea boy and a girl, you have a boy. We can bring them up to...” “That’s it, Deji,” She cut him short, “I took care of another’s child for twenty one years. I’ve had enough of that. I want to take care of myself and my child now.” “Whatever you decide, I will always be there for you.” Deji assured her. He packed the soup bowl and headed for the kitchen. She stood up and wiped her tears. “Let me start going, I still have to go and pick Tobi from my brother’s house and it’s already 7pm.” “Let me change into a more comfortable footwear and we’ll set out.” **************************************************************** |

**************************************************************** THIRTEEN The phone awakened Paul from a deep sleep. It took him a moment to realize that the high, frightened voice on the other end of the line belonged to Darasimi. It took him more to comprehend what she was saying. When he did, he sat straight up, instantly alert. “Where are you, Dara?” “Carlton Clinic,” She whispered. “The reception.” “Just wait there.” He swung his legs over the side of the bed. “I’ll be with you in five minutes.” Paul dropped the phone on the reading table beside the bed and looked at Grace. She was awake. “I’ll be right back.” Grace was his fiancée, a corper, visiting from Lagos. “It’s that girl, isn’t it?” “Yeah, it’s Dara.” He pulled up his trouser and grabbed a red t-shirt from the hanger. Grace yawned and sat up. “I don’t think I can take this any longer, ok?” “Baby, please, try and understand that I need her help.” He pleaded. “But if I hadn’t caught you two red handed, you wouldn’t have told me you had a ‘helper’ here in Ibadan.” She accused him. “So, what does she want right now? And why the rush?” “She...em...em...didn’t take her...em...atm...” He blabbered. “Just cut it, ok? Go and sort whatever it is out and come back fast.” “Aiight.” He grabbed the car key and made for the door. “And while you are at it, remember to tell her you have a fiancée and a 2-yr-old daughter.” She called after him. ************************************************************************* |

Skimpledawg:M not too good in verbal explanation but i'll try. when most men know a woman loves them, they begin to misbehave. Even d Bible talk am "husbands love ur wives" n d women to submit. |
