Tradition...
Freda was so excited. She had finalised every other formalities with the Igwe and all that was left was the marriage to hold in two days! Very soon, just very soon, she was going to become a Lolo's mother. It meant more wealth, more respect and more prestige! She was just so happy.

'you seem very excited today mum' Shiv commented as they sat together on Freda's bed.

Freda pulled her to myself, resting her head on her shoulders 'i am very excited indeed. You dont understand'

'lemme guess, you were awarded a new contract'

'even if i were to be awarded eleven contracts at a go, it wont surpass the joy i'm feeling right now! I met with the Igwe today and i'm so happy to inform you that all the procedures and formalities has been finalised!'

She noticed her daughter's sudden stiffness.

'whats wrong?' She slowly raised her daughter's face from her chest.

Shiv shook her head.

'dont shake your head for me. Aint you happy?'

'its not as if i'm not happy. I just..i..was just wondering mum...well, if...'

'are you developing cold feet already?' her mother cut in and laughed 'dont worry, its only natural'

'this is not about me developing cold feet 'bout the wedding. This is me considering the fact if i would be happy in this marriage or not' She tried to sound as polite as possible.

'what did you say?' A frown appeared on her mother's face.

'nothing. Sorry' She looked down.

'Shiv look at me this instant' The warning on her mother's face didnt go unnoticed. She raised her head 'you're going to tell me what you meant by that and you're going to do it right now!'

'its nothing mum. I was just wondering if i was making the right decision. Mia thinks its a foolhardy thing to do. Disappointing Choudhary. She feels he's the right man for me and to a certain extent, i feel she's right. Choudhary and i has been through a lot together, we overcame so many obstacles for us to be together and now i'm not so certain if breaking the engagement with him is a right idea. Besides, i dont even like this Dike man. I met with him today and he was...he was a first class jerk! How am i supposed to leave in the same house with such a man mum?'

'the same way the other wives has been leaving with him' Then her mother stood up and inhaled 'so this is all about Mia right? This is all about what Mia said. Mia again!'

'mum' She too stood up 'thats not what i meant'

'Shiv cant you see that Mia's just jealous of you? Cant you see that she desires everything you have and will ever have? Cant you see she's being envious of you and all she wants is for you to marry Choudhary so she could have Dike to herself? Cant you see?!'

Shivani shook her head 'Mia's not like that. I understand that she wants the best for me'

'and me?' Her mother spurred around 'i want the worst for you right? Thats what you're insinuating right?'

'no mum! I know you would never want the worst for me. You want the best for me more than every other person in this world' She held both her mother's arms.

'it has gotten so bad that Mia's words makes more sense to you than your mother's'
Shivani noticed her mother's voice had become shaky and it sounded hurt. When she looked into her eyes, she felt worse. Her mother was crying again.
'i, your mother, no longer have a say in your life. Your sister does right now' She sniffed.

'mum, please dont. Dont cry. I'll marry Dike if thats what you want. Mia dont...matter to...me' Mia did matter to her. Mia was her sister. But she just had to say it to please her mum. She quickly embraced her mum to hide her tears.

Freda wrapped her hands around her 'its really painful when a child doesnt see what her mother sees. I know whats going to be good for you Shiv. I know what you deserve as my child. I would have easily chosen Mia, but i knew she wasnt the best candidate for the crown prince. And so i chose you. Choudhary or whoever, should be in your past. He's nobody to you. Dike is your present now. Forget about your life in the US'

Shivani sobbed 'okay mum'

'forget about Mia as well. She's nothing but a bunch of senseless plantains. She's free to live her life anyway she wants but you....you're royalty. You're destined to be greater than her. She's going to remain under you forever'

'okay mum' Shivani didnt like the way her mum was sounding. Everyone was destined to do greater things in his/her own way. Thinking Mia wouldnt go anywhere in life wasnt a right thinking but she wasnt about to say that.

Freda smiled inwardly. When it came to Shivani, things were always easy.

Mia stood just outside the door listening to their conversation. Tears glistened in her eyes. Her mum thought she wasnt destined for greater things as well right? Well, she was going to prove her wrong. She was done tolerating everything.

She was done!

Question everyone:
Do you think Mia's to blame for the way she's acting? Do you think she doesnt have the right to fight for what she feels belongs to her as well? Dont you think she has a right to prove her mother wrong?

Nope.............mia isn't to blame for d way she is acting.

Her mom should take every blame.
Re: Tradition - A Story by ashatoda: 8:08am On Mar 13, 2017
but some parents are truly like Freda always selfish and self conceited they think about themselves first not minding the feelings of others. Mia is beautiful and intelligent she should try and overlook what her mother says and.go for her desire. keep it up Chumzypinky

I don't blame Mia one bit. She is only been human. I still prefer her a million times to Shiv who has no mind of her own.

Thank God I don't have a manipulative parent. Even if I do, I can not be manipulated. As much as I love my family esp my mum, I do my things my way. Explain to each other and we see reasons with each other.

Even the bible says, 'Love your neighbor as yourself'. If considering myself means selfishness, I will rather be selfish.

well to me she is to blame yes to blame if ur mom don't like you u don't have to take the wrong routes to prove u are greater like hell do it the right way. What I can say is she is more like her mom than shivani, heartless, cunning and manipulative just like her mom who does that. OK she wants dike she could just tell her sis she loves him instead she is guilt-tripping the sis that's not right. Yes she can fight for what belongs to her in the right way this is a wrong route she wants to take na.
Re: Tradition - A Story by Nnnena(f): 8:56am On Mar 13, 2017
The best character so far is,shivani she is her mother daughter and her sister pleaser.she is,trying so hard to be the best daughter for her mother and also trying to please herself and her sister. Let's put ourselves in her shoe even if we say we are not being manipulated by our mother we are in one way or the other.if our mother told us to do things for her even if we don't want to do it there would be a way they would tell us we,would surely do it. That also go to Dike he is his mother son. This is my opinion anyone can criticise or contradict

Freda is a horrible mother! She's succeeded in twisting Mia psychologically. I don't blame Mia, she's every right to fight for what she wants! A patient dog eats no bone! U gotta fight for what U want. Mia has every right to fight for a greater destiny.
I don't like Shiv. She's too weak and easily manipulated just like Jolade of Red Ashes. Too spineless.

Speak for yourself dear. I am not a people pleaser. I don't do things to please anybody whether d person is my Mum or my sibling. There's a limit to everything and choosing a spouse is completely off limits for any of my family members.

somehow i agree wit u dear. To me oo, Mia is not really to be blamed for whats happening to her. But den, on d final day, judgement day, everyone's gonna take responsibility for his/her own actions. No one's gonna say "Mia, i understand that everything you did, you did because of how your mother treated you. Its not ur fault"
even in d court of law, no one's gonna pardon her for killing someone because they feel her mother is to blame.
Wrapping everything up, everyone is responsible for his/her own actions... Shikena

Well when you put it that way I guess I can see where she's coming from. There's no way anyone could grow up around such negativity and not retaliate. And putting myself in Shivani's shoes, I understand why her mother approval means so much to her. Her mother is a chief, not her father, and it just goes to show that her mother has been the one providing for the family so she sees obeying Freda as an obligation to make up for all the years she inconvenienced herself for the sake of her family.

Tradition...
Dike found his wives sitting on the sofas in the living room, their gazes focused on the 25inches plasma TV. He walked past them and funny enough, no one uttered a greeting. Not even Dora.

He didnt care anyway. Maybe they finally realised he didnt care so much about 'em now. But heck, even Dora? Or was it that she was so engrossed in the Big Brother Africa they were watching that she hadnt noticed his presence?

As he climbed the stairs, he looked back to see if she'd noticed him but her gaze was still on the television.

After taking a fifteen minute shower he decided to come down for supper. He was dead tired and hungry. He found them in the same position which he had left them.

He approached the dinning section making sure he dragged his feet on the floor so they could notice him and bring over his food. When he saw no one raised her head, he pulled a chair making sure it made so much noise. Then he sat down.

No one looked up as well.

Then he lost it 'will y'all get your dirty behinds off that sofa and go get me my food?!' He bawled angrily.

This time Dora looked at him but she quickly looked away. He saw Adanna and Chinny exchange glances and he knew it immediately. Chinny was the mastermind.

'Chinemerem! Chinemerem!'

She looked at him casually 'any problem?'

'come here' he gestured.

'sorry, i'm busy'

He heard Dora wince.

'i'm not gonna repeat myself'

Flora gestured at her and she stood up, dragging her feet 'what is it?'

'come closer' he beckoned.

She went closer.

'go and get me my food now!'

She scoffed 'do we look like cooks to you? There's no food in this house. You should have dropped by a restaurant before coming'

'what did i just hear you say?' He had gotten the attention of everyone by now 'i'm supposed to drop by a restaurant when i have some lazy ass wives a' home?'

'and so we're supposed to slave ourselves in da kitchen for a less-caring nonchalant husband? Well, sorry. Because we grew wiser this time. If you aint gonna treat us as wives, then you'd better get ready to patronise a restaurant every other day'

Dike was visibly shaking with anger now 'Chinemerem, i wont repeat myself again. Get me my food or....'

'why me? Why must you ask me? Why not ask someone else? Please and please Dike, lets respect ourselves, leave me alone in peace' She started walking away.

He lost it again. He knew he was going to do something he'd regret but he was past caring. He stood up from his chair quickly and grabbed her arm.

'ouch! Let go of me!'

He dragged her to the kitchen and he heard the footsteps of the others as they followed suit.

'leave me alone you ill-mannered bastard! Let go of me now!' Chinny shouted.

'where's my food?' He dragged her to the sink and turned on the tap 'where's my food?' he asked again then splashed water on her face.

'Dike, stop it!' Dora panicked.

'stay away from this!' Dike pointed a warning finger.

Dora placed a hand on her forehead. She knew this was going to happen but Chinny would never lis'en, now look. Gosh! She didnt like this at all.

'Dike, leave me alone!' Chinny cried. He splashed water on her face again.

'so you're aint gonna feed me this night right? Well, enjoy the consequences' He blocked the sink to prevent water from rushing down. And when the sink basin was filled, he dipped her face into the water. Chinny's arms struggled in the air.

Dora couldnt stand the sight of it any longer. She ran away from the kitchen.

Chinny made gurgling sounds. By the time he raised her head, her eyes were red 'Dike, please, i beg you. Leave....'

He shoved her back into the water 'you fink you're smart aint it? Lets see who's smarter'

'Dike stop!' Adanna said firmly. Dike looked at her. She was holding a plate of jollof rice and meat 'all this because of food? Let her go now because food's here?'

He smirked 'over here'

She was hesitant for a while before she finally went to him.

'hand it over'

She placed the plate gingerly on his palms. Then without warning, he threw it on her face.

'ouch!'

A gasp escaped every of their lips including Chinny's who Dike had managed to remove from the water.

'so there was food and you all were busy giving me attitude right? Y'all are gonna pay for this today. Where's Dora? Call her! You're all dead'

Flora and Edna exchanged glances 'are you finkin' what i'm finkin'?' Flora whispered.
Edna nodded. And they immediately took their heels rushing to their rooms, Benita followed suit as screams from Adanna and Chinny filled the kitchen and the house. They didnt know what Dike was doing to them but it wasnt something pleasurable.

'this is not good! Someone would have to stand up to Dike someday' Flora said to Edna.

'and standing up to Dike, is what does two are suffering from' Edna replied panting.

Flora bit her fingers in anguish.
