Read a book or something. Customs collected 8M for the car that was fronted to get the papers. Only for Saraki to use the same paper(S) for a car he bought for 298M Naira.
use your sense too. How did the car bought for 298million scaled through customs ? sarski did not manufacture it in his bedroom. this news is just vendetta. As recently as two weeks ago, I wanted to buy a Nigerian used 2014 ford explorer . The seller is a young naval officer. the car was cleared via cotonue with no duty paid whatsoever. the man said nobody would disturb me once I tell them he was the first user in nigeria that military men no dey pay duty. How could I buy a vehicle for 8.5million only to be telling customs it was used by a naval officer. na so I quick go buy tokunbo jeje with 10 5million even though na 2013. so the bottom line is all the men in uniform and in high places including custom officials no dey pay duty. Lawless country

So it's now a case of 'your bad is worse than mine'? Very funny! That's d reason y'all support the nepotism and one sided display we see in the name of fighting corruption..such a pity.
I don't care about one-sided displays and nepotism. If you dipped your hands into the murky waters of corruption you should be brazen enough to face the consequences regardless of if you were singled out in the midst of other corrupt people. I mean, does a thief have the right to say "why are you arresting me am I the only thief?"

Stop asking stupid questions. The car was not purchased when Hameed Ali was the CGC so Mr Saraki was free to do anything. Under the Colonel, the car was routinely stopped to check for proper documentation which the driver couldn't provide so it was confiscated. When the driver presented the papers for the car, it was a fake, seeing that the duties paid were far less than the valuation of the car - more so, the paper presented was issued for another less expensive car and not the one that is currently owned by Saraki.

Read a book.

That's why it's better Ali wears the uniform and continue to do his work without fear or favor and let's see what other excuse they will come up with.

you are the one making stupid assertion here. govt and it's agencies is a continum . Where is the paper used to clear saraki vehicle? custom should have records . who cleared it? why clear it without collecting proper duty? I am not a custom officer so it is not my duty to ensure I pay proper duty cos I don't even know proper duty. it is the duty of fraudulent custom officers so Ali should rather deal with corrupt custom officers and all these will stop. If I buy a vehicle from a dealer it is expected the dealer paid duty. I can't be punished for an offence committed by customs themselves. that is what we are saying mr

You don't get it do you? When you have made up your mind to hang your dog any thread will be good enough.

It is more than wearing a uniform. It is about attempting to beat him into shape. It will start as wearing a uniform (useless because he had visited them on many occasions and it was never brought up) then it will graduate into "let my Rolls Royce come into the country free", " give my son the job", "divert these funds back to the senate committee on Customs" etc.

If Hameed Ali needed confirmation now like Magu does, they would have cooked up flimsy reports through their cronies in the DSS like they have done to Magu.

They are lucky PMB is a proponent of separation of powers.

[quote author=freeze001 post=54719772]I think that if Mr Ali was convinced of the propriety of the suspended policy to impound vehicles with insufficient duty payment, he ought not to have cancelled or suspended it at least until he had addressed the Senate who summoned him to explain the policy. I also don't think that appearing in the uniform of the CG of Customs as required by the Senate should be too much for one who supposedly has d interest of Nigeria at heart.

Why did he hurriedly suspend d policy if it was well thought out? Why are we hearing this news now? This happened in January, why was it hushed? Is it some kind of smear campaign? Ali's pride stands larger than his diminutive self and that is what d Senate has sniffed out n latched upon if this story is anything to go by. If he'd published this incident of importation of a car with false documents by the Senate president and calmly worn his uniform when summoned, he'd be like d stuff heroes are made of. Unfortunately, they're all freaking dirt

Your stoopidity knows no bounds. All the questions you are asking are the questions that made Customs confiscate the car I.e because they saw that the previous govt or better still sullied customs officials did a botched job and let Saraki go free with financial criminality. This new govt or CGC has decided to correct the ills by making sure Saraki pays the correct duty that behoves the car in question.

Stop trying to force me into educating you. Ask kindly and I would oblige.

you are a fool now I know. After confiscating the vehicle, in your well cooked sahara report , how many officers were arrested as accomplice after confiscating the vehicle? If I have 5 million and I buy a vehicle from a car vendor and I don't have any other money and they now confiscate my vehicle for an offence committed by a custom officer is that justice? what kind of society are we running self with fools like you having access to internet. nigeria is doomed. once again Mr, you dont confiscate vehicles from end users after you failed in your work as a custom officer. purge the bad eggs in your system and things work out smoothly. ode

suspending the policy, no matter how well though out, in line with the directive of the Senate, pending his(Ali's) appearance b4 the house, was the wise tin to do.
There's nothing to be gained portraying the Custom as obstinate when he has been given an opportunity to appear b4 the house to justify and substantiate his position.
Don't forget that the Senate, not withstanding the intentions and motives, is the highest law making organ of govt and as such deserves to be respected by all agencies under the executive arm of govt. In saner climes that is where the beauty of democracy lies.
Then on the issue of smear campaign.
Before this news came out I had always been very convinced that the Senators re actually the ones not only on smear campaign but also on a vengeful vindictive witch-hunting campaign. If not so why the unnecessary focus on the issue of uniform? Doesn't that amaze u? Why take it to such personal level?
Although,if I was in his position I wud simply put aside my pride and don the uniform. He has nothing to loose.
There is a time to fight, and a time to be wise to know when not to fight.

So teachers shoulder also be deployed in the industries to test for their students who escaped with undeserved grades.
If the custom really want to do their job they should man the borders properly and network with vehicle registration outfits, not to come to road to terrorise the populace and subject them to undeserved intimidations.
Going by your logic, there's no need to report stolen goods to the police. The police should have prevented the thieves from stealing it in the same place.

The Ali policy would drastically reduce smuggling because people would know that you car can be reposed any time for missing customs paper.

So you people are saying it is better to check vehicle import duties on the road than at the ports?
and also to subject vehicles more than 20 years old to custom checks.

Customs should do their work st their duty posts.
Mr man wash your brain please. That's not what people are saying, what we are saying is that what Mr. A paid should be applicable to Mr. B

i won't be tired of educating you. if police is guarding a car and the car is stolen, the first person that will be arrested is the police officer guarding it. your logic is defective that is even if you did one in school. the custom officer in this case is an accomplice by accepting to collect lesser duty. in the case of a missing vehicle police is not there. So these are two separate issues. moreso, the custom officers deliberately allowed the duty to be stolen because it is impossible to clear the vehicle from the port without an accomplice in custom. so unlike police and car theft, duty theft can be 100 percent eradicated simply by flushing out corrupt custom officers. you got it dunce?

Our investigators discovered that Nigerian Customs
officers in Lagos had on January 11, 2017
intercepted and impounded a Range Rover SUV
which carried documents that claimed its chassis
number was “SALGV3TF3EA190243.” Customs
sources told our correspondent that the value of
the car was N298 million, which meant that
customs duty of N74 million should have been paid on the car.

Read and digest first, then come back to comment.

Since Nigerians are now watching the second dismal series of the "Return Of The Saint Muhammadu Buhari", when are the customs authorities and Sahara Reporters crack investigative journalists going to show Nigerians a real scoop, for example they can make a start with the paid import duty certificate of that multi-million dollar Mobile Motorized Clinic (Intensive Care Life Support) Vehicle that "Saint" Aisha Buhari's "accountable" Future Assured "charity" commissioned recently "to provide medical services to displaced persons in north-east nigeria". Whether Saint Aisha imported that vehicle recently, or acquired it locally, or even commandeered it whenever from wherever by whatever means, with this unstellar piece of abhorrently retrospective piece of customs and excise policy, everybody and nobody in Nigeria deserves to know the cost of that vehicle, it's year and locale of manufacture, when it was imported into Nigeria by and for Saint Aisha's Future Assured, and how much import duty was paid. Anything short of that is sheer hypocrisy, and corruption, from the highest of low places in the public polity.
Re: Customs Seized Senator Saraki’s Range Rover (Photos) by ray48: 10:49am On Mar 19, 2017
Fake news. Why is this coming out now? Was d senate instrumental to the clearance of the container load of arms & ammunition the Customs arrested last month? Is d Senate responsible to d loads and loads of containers of rice dat enter into Nigeria thru d land borders? Take a visit to any of our border crossings esp Seme or Idiroko and see what is happening there. You ll weep for our dear nation. Is the Senate responsible for that one too?
The bottom line is that the system as presently constituted is failing. The Govt needs to be on their toes and rejig these Govt agencies whether it's Customs, NAFDAC, SON etc.
They should be made to be answerable to the people.
