The truth is this and it's very simple: it's all in what Abraham Maslow described as the "hierarchy of needs".

Have you ever wondered (like a lot of people) why it seems as if people in the developed world have better brains than people in the third world (Africans generally and Nigeria specifically)? Why people over there come out with amazing inventions everyday while we over here seem not to be doing so well?
