I am a well known Nairalander having join the forum since the year 2007 and making valuable post and contributions, but for this thread I had to register a new moniker because of the shame I feel and also to avoid both shock and embarrassment some people will feel if I used my well known moniker here. My story is a bit long, emotionally charge, heart rending, sympathetic and sad. I crave all your indulgence to please read patiently to the end.

My name is Emmanuel Jimmy. I use to be a promising young professional with bright prospect and a budding career. Everything was going on well for me and just when I was about settling down as a man and start a family, hell broke loose.

I'm a sickler with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) otherwise known as SS genotype. And so I have been managing this abnormal blood condition all my life to the best of my ability with little complications until it throws out one of it rare but devastating and life stagnating problem at me.

Sometime in January 2010 I felt some itches around my left ankle and had the urge to scratch it and when I did I discover it was a tiny little rash. But to my amazement the following day what started out as a rash had blossom into a blister that kept increasing in size as time goes on. Since I have never experience a thing like this before I didn’t pay much thought to it, my thinking was that when it (the blister) busts the fluid in it would drain and it would dry up and that will be the end of it. Little did I know what started as a tiny rash on my left ankle will mark the beginning of the most horrible experience in my life that would keep me grounded for seven years now. The blister busted and became an open sore that refuse to heal despite all my effort at the chemist. It didn’t end there, another one started at my right ankle at exactly the same position as the one on the left ankle, that was when I decided it was time I see a doctor to find out what was happening to me. However, my fiancée then insisted she knew a local herbalist that treats this sort of thing and within a very short time too (mind you before this time I never had the slightest inkling that my SS blood status could be remotely connected to what I was passing through). So I consented to my ex-fiancée’s advise and we went to see the herbalist who after inspecting the wounds (which by the way have increase in sizes before now and became septic due to unsterilized dressings) gave me some concoctions to be drinking as many times as I can in a day saying it will deal with the wounds from the inside so that whatever medication is applied to it on the outside would be effective. He then told us to come the following morning to commence treatment, that’s after I have been made to part with the sum of fifty thousand naira for starters (lol). To cut my long story experience with the herbalist short, there was no remarkable improvement with my condition, instead another sore developed yet again directly opposite the previous one on my left ankle, which a Consultant will later referred to as a mirror image.

I then decided to count my losses with the herbalist and visit the hospital where I was diagnosed with chronic multiple bilateral ulcers and was placed on admission. The firm I was working for was very understanding, they granted me sick leave without any fuss and even went ahead to foot my bill at the hospital initially. When I was admitted, the initial plan of action by the doctors was to place me on vitamins, antibiotics and regular wound dressing to try to get the ulcers to heal naturally on their own and if that fail Skin Grafting will come in as a last option. After six months, there was still no remarkable improvement, the wound surfaces were not even red enough to consider it clean for skin grafting, hence, a VAC (vacuum assisted closure) machine was brought to my bedside and enclosed tightly over the wounds to suck up the bad fluid and dead tissues in order to force it clean and reddish in preparation for skin grafting. After ten days of using the VAC machine on me (5 days on each leg), skin graft was performed successfully on both ankles but that only mark the beginning of another failed battle and a journey of frustrations and stagnation.

Eight month after my admission in the hospital I was discharge with a skin graft on my ankles that looks good, strong and blended well with the surrounding skin of my legs. But barely three weeks after, tiny bit of the grafted skin started pilling off around the edges. I was alarm but could do nothing to prevent it and by the fourth week almost half of the grafted skin were off. I ran back to the hospital where I met another senior consultant who sat me down and explain that due to my type of genotype I was always lacking in adequate oxygen carrying blood and the lack of adequate oxygen carrying blood to supply my ankle area is what was responsible for the skin graft to fail and that is why they do not guarantee 100% sustenance of skin graft on sickle cell disease patient, reason why they try to ensure the wounds heal on their own.

After the breakage of the first skin graft I had done, I tried managing the wound by becoming an outdoor patient going for wound dressings every alternate days, taking antibiotics and vitamins and trying as much as I can to eat healthy foods and lots of fruits. Eventually I lost my job due to redundancy. Ofcourse I can’t blame my employers, they have tried their best to hold on to me that long despite my diminishing productivity, it wasn't my father’s business you know.

After battling for a long time trying to get the ulcers to heal with all manner both orthodox and alternative medicine to no avail, broke and out of a job with no prospect of getting another due to my present condition, I decided it was time to go home. When I said home I mean my ancestral home, by now I have lost hope and if I must die I should go and die in my village, that was my thought. So I told my fiancée who had stood by me all through these ordeal I was going home and she has my blessings to get herself another man. She would have none of it though but said she will stick by me to the end and even followed me to my village, this was in December 2012. But, she finally gave in to pressure from her parents and got married in October 2013 (who in their right senses would wait for or marry a liability that I had become) and gave birth to a set of twins in September 2014, but that’s a different story altogether.

Now after series of healing and breaking up of the ulcers I was admitted yet again in a reputable teaching hospital on the 26th of February 2015 where I was for ten months undergoing same treatment regime as before, only difference this time around was I was subjected to more than 10 pans of blood transfusion, intensive daily dressings and ensuing the ulcers healed and closed completely on their own. Two months after I was discharged from the hospital, the ulcers broke up yet again – first it started by the accumulation of little puss at the spot on my left ankle. When this happen I was advised to be on antibiotics same as those given to me last time I was in the hospital, but since they were so expensive I couldn’t keep taking the normal dosage as money was now a scarce resources for me. Even my last admission in the hospital if not for my mother I wouldn’t have been able to pull through financially. Need I tell you how she developed high blood pressure (HBP) because of me and suffered a major stroke as a result and was admitted as well even before I got discharged from the hospital without my knowledge. She didn’t want me to know in order for me not to leave the hospital prematurely until I get well (such a selfless mother). I only got to know the day I came back from the hospital. So for the wounds to break up again left a very bitter taste in my mouth, a heavy burden on my chest and a constant nauseating feeling that I begin to see death as the only way out. Though thoughts of committing suicide had crossed my mind a couple of times in the course of my grueling ordeal, I finally put my thoughts into action on the 17th and 20th of October 2016 by taking rat poison and ‘uta pia pia’ on the two days mention respectively. But to my surprise I’m still here, I don’t know what happen cause I took more than enough quantity that can knock down a camel stone cold on the two occasions, but here I am. Maybe is God I don’t know (maybe doctors would have an explanation to it, just maybe).

My hope was rekindled about two months ago precisely on the 6th of February, 2017. While accompanying my mother to the hospital for her physiotherapy (she is recovering gradually from the stroke she suffered last time I was admitted in the hospital) I bumped into one of the doctors that performed the first skin graft on me (he was actually the owner of the VAC machine used on me as well having brought it from his own clinic) and we got talking. I told him my experiences thus far - how the skin grafts failed and how the ulcers kept reoccurring subsequently. He told me there was a permanent solution (not death) but that it will cost money and it will be done outside the country. It was a plastic surgical procedure known as Apligraf which is simply a culture-derived human skin equivalent (HSE). He said being an artificial skin it would stay glued to my flesh with or without adequate supply of oxygenated blood around my ankle thus putting an end to constant breakage and reoccurring of the ulcers. When I asked how much it will involve, he put a called to one associate professor based in India right in my present to inquire the cost of the procedure on a sickle cell patient with multiple bilateral ankle ulcers from Nigeria. The Prof replied since it is a straight forward procedure and I wouldn't exceed maximum 8 weeks of stay in the hospital it will cost me about seven thousand dollars ($7000) comprising cost of operation, admission and feeding. When we did the conversion at official rate of N430 per dollar as at February 2017 and also adding my traveling expenses, we arrived at 3.5m naira, that is, N3,500,000.00. But now at the current rate of N370/$1 plus my traveling expenses, it will amount to three million naira (N3,000,000.00).

Out of the above amount my Church has already pledge to assist me with the sum of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000.00) meaning I'm left to raise 2.5million naira (N2,500,000.00). When I approach Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, they told me my case was beyond what they can handle at the foundation meaning funding is a major handicap there. That is why I'm using this medium to solicit for financial assistance from well meaning Nigerians in general and Nairalanders in particular to please come to my aid. I'm sorry if you feel offended by my strange method but I have no choice particularly now that I can see a ray of light at the end of the tunnel and is almost within my graps. I have no rich uncle or aunty anywhere, you people here are the only hope I have please help me. It will take only twenty five people to respond with N100,000.00 each and I will be good to go but if that's not possible no amount will be too small. As you show your sympathy for me by your generosity may God or whatever is it you belief in reward you abundantly.

I was 29 years old when this horrible challenge befell me. I'm about 36 and a half years old now, meaning I have not only been through excruciating pain, agonized and traumatized but have been stagnated for the pass 7 years!! Well, now that I see a ray of hope that will bring an end to my current grueling experience I need your help to have my life back. Like I said at the beginning of my story I was a promising young professional with bright prospect. I belief I can still impact positively on mankind God sparing my life and bringing to an end my present nightmare. I can't continue to waste away like this and the pain alone is something out of this world, hence, I have been living daily on not your across the counter kind of pain relief drugs but very strong prescription pain relief to ease my constant severe pains a little. So I beg of you PLEASE HELP ME to get my life back.

Thank you for your positive response and remain ever blessed.

Here are pictures of the current state of my lower limbs (ankle area), please viewer discretion is strongly advised.
