For the pm process,all you do is reply the mail sent you from nairaland.A simple hi as response is fine.That way the person who sent the mail receives your reply and gets your email address.

Weldone chief, to add a bit to what tyosho said, that mail you will respond to would have landed in your regular email account. So all you need do is open it & respond like you're responding to regular email.
