Bro... you just don't get it. Is it a Chinese loan?....and how would the factory expand the local industry?....do you have any idea why the factory in Aba would be given the contracts instead of those in Mexico etc?.... and is this what Aba is looking forward to?...to have giant foreign owned factories?..Really?...is this something to make you proudly beat your chest?.... or shouldn't it really make you bow your head in shame? The first time they came and took us away as slaves in foreign lands..... now we have gone away to invite them to make us slaves in our own land. History has a way of repeating itself.
He will soon insult you and call you Afonja....... Someone is saying 'partnership'. I wonder when giving a loan becomes partnership.
Let me come and be going, before I will be told my life history on NL.

I'm amazed at the level of reasoning here. I want to believe people still have the ability to comprehend and analyze simple information.

FYI:

1. This deal, if it pulls through, would be a major FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) for the state. Like any FDI, the bigger share of the profits would be repatriated home but hey, if you have a problem with that why haven't you yourself invested in something like this all this while? We need more of this kind of investment.

2. The shoes produced would be for export. That's a source of revenue for our economy. 5000 shoes per day for export is not beans!! Do you know how much the country stands to make from this alone?

3. 10,000 people off the streets and unemployment market is not such a bad idea.

4. It would help open up the hide and skin industry in Kano as they would seek to source their raw materials locally.

5. A project valued at $1.5B is a lifeline for any economy. Why do you think Trump has been clamouring for returning jobs to the US and slamming 45% tariffs on Chinese products?

Seriously, this deal is much better than hiding money in forests, burial grounds, towers and all those other bad bad places.

Good one OVI.

Actually that could be impressive if they could tell us the actual amount definitely not $1.5b in a shoe making factory. Please ask questions cos what I see if that amount is real is a state about to be sold lies for cheap political points.
Kudos to him on that initiative but I disagree with the deal value.

What other service can function around it. See michelin was in p.h once they closed it ended the manufacture of tire in nigreria this factory will hang around for three years then close by then all skilled craftmen would be rendered useless and we have no choice but to import from china.
I understand your fears bro, but it's my hope that the Abia state govt lures more indigenous investors to set up leather tanneries & factories to produce soles, laces, adhesives. The local tanneries can be supplied by small holder ranches & piggeries.

China is obviously looking for cheap labor, granted they are going to create jobs in the process just like the same company did in Ethiopia, but the spent $250 million on a cluster of 80 factories and industrial park in Ethiopia so the $1.5 billion sounds way way off mark us usual with Nigerian journalism deceptive Nigerian politicians.

This is probably going to be $15m or $150m.

These guys will bring in machinery where every point of production will be full automated needing only a few hands to operate the machinery rendering the laval ones useless

Does everyone just ignore those pictures where a line of shoe parts is laid beside a machine

Aba guys don't need a yellow man to put them through these things

Procure these machines for them

Anyway this is another way to score cheap political point

I believe the $1.5B is the expected product output. But don't be surprised, the dailymail of UK says the company has a $1B facility in Ethiopia.

Saw what coming? What are you? 12? Do you think this is the first time states have been partnering with foreign countries in Nigeria? Nigeria and by extension Nigerians are too decadent, corrupt and selfish to maintain or start anything good. If it were you would have seen the effect in your lives from decades of partnering with countries.

This will render local shoe producers at Aba jobless! Aba is number one in shoe production in Nigeria and it already employed thousands of Nigerians.

So bringing the Chinese to takeover shoe production is not called "bringing investment"! St*upid clueless governor!

A smart governor would prefer investment in stuff we don't have or we're far behind in, like production of Solar cells or a factory that produces any type of car parts. Imagine what any of these two businesses would do for Abians and Nigerians as a whole!

We've useless people in government who only know how to loot public funds!

How will you get it when you are an Afonja. The Chinese loan is simply to expand the industry and meet global demand. The labor force will still be locally filled Aba crafters. The goal is to to take design orders from Wal-Mart, Target , Sears, e.t.c., and mass produce whatever they demand. Right now these giant retail products are being made in Mexico, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Malaysia because they have giant factories to meet their demands. That's what Aba is looking forward to. Instead of small individual shops, they can harness them all into giant factories with mechanized equipment to mass produce. The ingenuity and design will still be Aba!

why all dis story? when u hav nt even seen d foundation of d industry. Nigerian politician, Lai Mohammed is still a learner. I say wait until u see d industry, just my reasonable advice nd view.

This company is actually already in Ethiopia. They will employ local labor for sure but independent shoe makers in Aba will automatically become their competitors. There are advantages and there are disadvantages but I think this is a good development above all.

How does this help Abians this will never happen in Anambra. Just imagine the governor bringing in your competitor dashing him free land e.t.c the only way this makes sense to the Governor himself is if this factory belongs to the governor and just fronting this stuff.

The 10000 staff are factory cleaners and security men. (Mordern Robotic factory) All the local shoe entraprenaurs in aba will be made jobless. Why are our governors more destructive than creative. They should bring in hightech companies from japan and germany and stop this rubbish.

China may have tried to send shoes to Nigeria but cant compete while kill our local advantage is that what they made him Governor for. So a local business man cant buy machines to do this job you want tobring in china that has easy access to Capital to come and kill our local market.

Governor we need hightech factories that is what produces Jobs for our youths like solarwafer factory, synthetic hair factory, pharmacetical drug makers, modular refinaries. HEY NOT SHOE NOT SHOE the only thing poor man they take chop HEY

Nice explanation

But do you know all over the world the Chinese flourish with cheap labour..Have you ever considered that the abians they will employ we be paid pea nuts and most of the money will go to the Chinese..

What I think is needed is technology transfer.

An arrangement in which aba shoemakers can be merged into one big factory and government support them with funding to get lastest equipment for large scale production
