A woman from New York:

Disappointment is not the emotion here.

As a nurse, I think back to a day of a 29 year old dad in an isolation bed on an oncology unit I needed to see because of his insurance. He had two small kids on his bed. His condition was critical.

His insurance was through his employer.

But, I wonder if he lost his job, lost his coverage along the way, he could still get coverage through the ACA, Obamacare, because he would have no worry about pre-existing conditions, nor would he have to be concerned about lifetime caps.

Today that changes. Today he can indeed be worried. Republicans have tossed his life aside hither skither. The very people elected to protect this young man may have thoughtlessly left him helpless.

And what about those two little kids, now a little older. Would they lose their daddy? Would they live a life of angst and poverty because at twenty nine years old their dad had cancer and may still or once again need treatment?

And what do these legislators do? They sing "hey, hey, hey good bye" and go party in the Rose Garden at the White House with Donald Trump, a billionaire.

Today's emotion? Devastation.

If you loose your job you don't loose your insurance if you enroll to COBRA and it will cover the same thing that was covered when you are employed So, if your medical conditions were covered under that plan they will continue to be covered under COBRA

Rhode Island

I pay federal income taxes just like you. However, I am also sick. As a child I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition which renders me unable to produce the hormone insulin. Thus, I rely on injections and daily blood testing to keep myself alive. Without insurance, I need to pay over $20,000 per year to survive. I have no other choice. Without insulin, I die. That's an unreasonable economic burden for a 24-year-old--frankly, for anyone.

The fact is, there is nothing I could have done to stop myself getting sick, just like those with cancer or many other illnesses. I was simply healthy, then I wasn't. The healthcare market is not a free market because we, the sick, are held captive to our bodies and the medical costs that price us out of living.

A more economic example: I cover my home in case of fire, and I hope I never have to call up the insurance company. Yet, I still pay in to the system to protect my property. Hopefully, I will never have to use that money, and it will be used to pay off some other person’s insured and destroyed home instead. With healthcare, why is it any different? We pay in, hoping never to have to use the benefits, while the money goes to another. You, like me, could wake up one day and find yourself stuck with a pre-existing condition. This is why we have insurance and need the protections of the ACA.

I am self-employed, and pretty healthy, so I paid for my own health care; the Obamacare options didn't work for me: too high a deductible, and too high a premium. However, I had no problem paying the tax penalty to keep the system working. It wasn't too painful, and it meant that the poor and the very sick would get care, without losing all they had, or relying on the dismal experience (and expense to the rest of us) of an emergency room. They actually could have doctors, just like rich people! To me , the penalty was my payback for being lucky enough not to require extensive health care. Now we're back to the bad old days, only worse. The rich get richer, the poor get sicker and die.

It's clear that we need a public option if a single-payer system ain't feasible.

At the very least, the government insurance (which could be known as Medicare-For-All) would provide some competition to the private insurance companies. It could result in a reduction in the average monthly premiums.

I don't believe tax hikes would be needed to fund a Medicare For All program. Redirecting monies from wasteful programs, and taxing Wall Street speculation could raise enough money to fund the program every year.

I also agree that barriers to the importation of medication from some other countries, such as the UK and Canada, that meet the strict guidelines of the FDA, should be encouraged. People shouldn't go bankrupt due to unnecessary excessive healthcare costs. I'd admit that Senator Booker goofed when he and some other Dem senators voted against a similar measure in January.

From Australia:

I have always failed to understand the American mentality on health. This whole debate is about insurance. I wouldn't want health insurance, I'd want health care. This is one reason I'm ever so glad I live in Australia. Heath care in Australia is guaranteed by the state.

Australia is a wealthy first world nation. That means that the nation has certain social conventions. One of those is that most health costs are covered as a social service, like roads, education, defense.

This debate about health insurance ignores the real problem, health care is unreachable for many in America, and your law makers seem to think that's just fine.

You nailed it. Do you see them advocating Medicaid for children born with diabetics or Autism or hole in the heart. Listening to this guys makes me feel like puking. I guess they want America to be like the old country they left behind. Republicons have a way of damaging some people's brains. How come a lot of Republican Senators are coming out against the bill?. They would never answer that.

Ever since they created the mess in Iraq and the region surrounding it, based on lies of weapons of mass destruction, and against the standing of the United Nations, I have been very suspicious of them. Fighting AlQaida, they created ISIS. They did not solve any problem, they made them bigger.

My comfort is that their inhuman healthcare laws do not affect me. And more than ever I am glad to live in a beautiful place in Europe. But I feel for people like you.

Got you. It's not even about me because I have what we call Cadillac Heathcare and I am very fortunate that I have good health due to my genes and healthy habits and vigorous workout. It's about millions of less fortunate Americans. America is the only developed country in the world where her citizens declare bankruptcies because of sickness. A country that can spend Trillions of $ on war equipments and can't give basic care to her less fortunate citizens. That reminds me of Nigeria. Like I said before, I grew up under Reagan and I thought I have seen the worst of republicanism but these bunch are scary.

Tell that to the people that always gobble up republican junks without critical thinking. How could any sane person advocate for children born with Autism, Diabetics or Hole in the Heart to go on Medicaid which republicans have cut by Hundreds of billions of $. President Trump met with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull where he praised the country's health-care system, shortly after House Republicans passed a bill to overhaul the U.S. health-care system.

Australian health funds generally impose a 12 month waiting period before you can claim on a pre-existing condition.

Is it evil if patients wait for a year before claiming benefits?. Irony is laughing at you

Wailing over issues that have nothing to do with you.

Another first by our Bigoted President. We have something called Cinco De Mayo which is Fifth of May that is celebrated by Mexicans in America. It's been an official celebration since 16 years ago in the White House by George W. Now the clown in chief put a stop to it to appease his white nationalists supporters. A cabinet that has only one black and no Hispanics in a diverse and multicultural country. What a shame.

Are Australians with a better health care system evil for mandating a one year waiting period for people with pre existing conditions which can lead to their death?

The cuts to Medicare in order to compensate for the proposed cut in the corporate tax rate is crazy. The corporations already pay an effective tax rate of 12%, which is similar to the rate in Ireland.

Anyway, all I want is competition in the marketplace. Something has to be done to bring down the soaring cost of premiums
