OGreene: Hmmmm.. Well you are right but let's reason and find the source of this because I believe CBN gave out official rate to embassies but some people somewhere or the banks are using it for business. I also noticed that few weeks or months to the expiring date of the exchange rate the US consulate posted on the website that the exchange rate will expire that's when CBN bring out new policy about exchange rate and visa fee will go up as well.. The million dollar questions are; 1, Why can't FG or CBN abolish BDC? 2, Why can't FG or CBN give official rate to foreign missions and embassies since FG have bilateral trade deals with US and other countries? 3, why can't FG or CBN make sure the difference between officiate rate and BDC is less than #10 that is was 3 years ago? |

adey2014: There are good grad schools that fit your profile. Ask the Chemistry dons on NL : OluDare01, curemorgan. On a general note, re-take the GRE. Score as high as you can. Find 3 profs who can write outstanding letters of recommendation for you. Start thinking hard about why you want a PhD. And your likely plans thereafter. Google "US chemistry graduate schools" and contact a few profs in those schools who're working in your research areas of interest. Start applying. |

fredoricko: I observed that few days to this revision of their rate that is when FG or CBN will bring new policy for exchange rate and visa fee always increased. I assumed US embassy wanted to recover their lost money back since they sold visa fee at 54,400 for weeks when BDC rate was 450 plus. |

I completely feel you. Think about it this way: If the US embassy decides to increase the visa fee from $160 to $200 or more regardless of the rate, would you still query them? Understand that they are running it like a business outfit generating money for the US government and people are not compelled to apply for their visa. Like it is said in Yoruba "Aje ko gba ni" (Take it or leave it). Energy should rather be channeled to increasing the value of our own naira. Reporting to the government or CBN won't change anything. Remember these same set of government officials apply for US visas too. LagosismyHome: |

djmakson: I do not agree with all the points you raised. Of course it is a business. And even when it was about 34k in 2015, they made millions daily. If they choose to increase the dollar fee of every category I wouldn't be concerned "cos na dem get yam na dem also get knife". But as long as the fee remains $160, then they should stick to CBN approved rates. Things will continue to go awry in Nigeria because of this " it won't change anything mentality " It's time we recognized our right and assert it. Sixty four thousand naira is just much much! 2 Likes |

Tunnyz7: What a big shame and slap to CBN. And the irony of it all is that this wouldn't obtain in the US. They have regulatory bodies for everything in the US that ensure the excesses of every organisation is checked. So isn't it logical to expect them to maintain the same high standard on foreign soil? 1 Like |

I think this visa fees argument here is not logical, before you complain about how much foreign embassies charge Nigerians for visa first of all find out how much Nigerian embassies in their own country charge their citizens. Nigerian embassy in US( Atlanta) charges $180 + $30 processing fees http://nigeria-consulate-atl.org/application-fees/

justwise: It is not the dollar value that is in question but the exchange rate used that is in question.... the embassy should not used an exchange rate even higher than black market ..... that is extortion 9 Likes |

LagosismyHome: You are wrong. Embassies uses reciprocity policy.(do me i do you God no go vex), but some Nigerians as usual will not be objective. What is Reciprocity? Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of reciprocity: when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas. https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/fees/reciprocity-by-country.html |

justwise: What has reciprocity got to do with "exchange rate" used ...... the fee is fixed yes at $160 based on "do me i do you ".... yes that not in debate . What i been going on about is the exchange rate used cannot be higher than even black market 2 Likes |
