The Northern Elders Forum has maintained that the North must retain the presidency if Buhari's failing health prevents him from seeking re-election in 2019.
While speaking in an exclusive interview with New Telegraph, the spokesman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi, disclosed that should President Muhammadu Buhari’s failing health prevents him from seeking re-election in 2019, the North must retain the presidency.

The elder statesman stressed that the region must be allowed to field a presidential candidate through the All Progressives Congress (APC), in 2019 should Buhari fail to seek re-election.

He said in the situation of any eventuality, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo should be allowed to complete the current tenure but will not be allowed to contest in 2019.

Abdullahi said, “The constitutional provision says that in the event that the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated for one reason or the other and cannot perform the duties of his office, he will be succeeded by the Vice president.

“But no one is in a position to know at what point he is going to recover fully and come back to office, or whether the unexpected could happen. The northern elders insist that Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019

“If the worst case scenario happens, and Buhari is not back on seat, the constitution is very clear that the vice president takes over.

“And what we then expect is that he will take that tenure to its logical end and from there, the politics of power sharing will take precedence over anything else.

“When the unexpected happens, in 2019 we will be back to our position that the north should be treated equitably and fairly. And we expect that another northern candidate will emerge as presidential candidate on the platform of APC.”

Abdullahi lamented that the north is still marginalized in spite of the fact that Buhari is president. “To be fair and truly honest, I will say that yes, our expectations have been far above what we saw on ground. Meaning that what we were expecting from this government in terms of equity and justice to the north has not materialized up till now,” he said.


According to him, the North is still being cheated in spite of the fact that one of its own is president.

“For example, if you look at both the 2016 and 2017 budgets, if you combine capital and recurrent expenditures for both years, the North took roughly 30 per cent in spite of the fact that everybody knows that even if it’s by one per cent, the north is more populated than the South. Even in terms of landmass, the North constitutes 75 per cent of the landmass of this country,” he pointed out.

The NEF spokesman blamed Buhari for giving key ministries in his administration to southerners “who don’t feel shy of looking after themselves first before the North, even if it’s on second thoughts.”

Abdullahi said that some of the projects that should improve the living standard in the North have been abandoned even by this administration.

“Take, for example, the Mambila Power Project, the dredging of River Niger, the Ajaokuta Steel and so on. Of course, you can also blame past northern leaders who were in power when these projects were just brushed

If the North forcefully decide to put a running mate in presidential position against the VP, am afraid the ticket will not sell.

Their coerce strategies for the VP to resign will end up hunting them but this is when he (the VP) should remain resolute and allow justice play it's course.

Indeed the cabals are crawling out from their caves knowing their master does not have the wilt to continue.

Note: I don't expect less from some people saying it's master-slave fight but they don't know this is pure politics at play as one or two of their people will b involved no matter what.

Southerners always indirectly giving these people the gut to behave as they like. At times I feel sad about the yorubas, because they are the people giving these Hausas the gut to be misbehaving while ignorantly claiming sophistication in politics. I am not a fan of Jonathan per say because he erred in many ways but 2015 would have been the best chance the igbos and the yorubas would have shown north that Nigeria is not their own. They threatened as they have started with osibanjo now that if power is not handed over to them heaven will fall, but the SW messed up forming sophistication and good political strategists. Had it been we shaked them then, they won't be threatening and talking rubbish again.

In a scenario where Buhari cannot continue in 2019 and Osinbajo is on the ticket for APC, let us look at what may happen;

1.) Lets assume the North feel they cant have their way, what can they do? They can refuse to vote for APC (Osinbajo).

2.) The South will Vote for APC.

3.) Now, the East, out of hatred, may not want to vote for a Yoruba (Osinbajo/APC).

4.) Ofcourse, PDP will not present an Igbo President, so it is safe to say they will present another Northerner.

5.) That Northerner in PDP, will get the North's Vote.

6.) The East/Igbos (unlike what Yorubas/West did in 2011, when they supported/voted Jonathan,an Eastern Candidate, based on "rationality and best interest", against this same Buhari) will rather vote a Northerner in PDP, ....meaning PDP can produce the next President but it will still be a Northerner.

But another crucial decider will be who each party, makes its VeePee.:

a.) If APC with Osinbajo, makes a Northerner its V.P, it may dilute the Northern vote a bit but knowing the North, they ar elike Sheep and treasure being the President more than anything, so they will stil vote the PDP, for a Northern President.

a1.) But if the APC/Osinbajo makes an Easterner its V.P, it may dilute the Eastern Vote for the PDP/Northerner President. How much this can sway the election will now depend on who the East trusts more, to achieve their own personal interest.
From what l know, the Northerner will NEVER allow an Igbo to be President, they still have the events of 1965 on their mind and have vowed that an Easterner must NEVER rule this country.

b.) If PDP/Northerner President, makes an Igbo its V.P. This will certainly add-up to the Northerner votes and may likely produce a winning ticket.
But it will still boils down to whether the Igbos will chose "their long term interest" or will take side with their "hatred for the West/Yorubas".

Long term interest of the Igbos can only be achieved with Yorubas on their side (reason Biafra has never been realisable is simply because Igbos have not had the sense to overcome their hatred for Yorubas.

Igbos/East FEAR the "The Northerners" but HATE the Yorubas.
Yorubas/West DISTRUST both the East and the North but still finds the North manageable, as long as it is not about "Political Power".
Northerners/Hausa/Fulani DETEST/LOATH the Igbos?East but holds the West/Yorubas in contempt, even though they still find them reasonable.

Thus, it is very obvious that Easterners hold the key in 2019 (if they dont "sell" their "influence' as is always the case!).
It will boil down to them deciding whether to vote for based on "Hatred" or to Vote based on "rationality and self preservation".

The above are my own permutations, l may be wrong though.
