Eni Njoku and Kennth Dike were made the VC's of University of Lagos and University of Ibadan not because they merited the position. Their appointment was based on nepotism and ethnic favoritism as instigated by Nnamdi Azikiwe who was the president. Professor Saburi Biobaku was meant to be the VC of Unilag instead of Eni Njoku.

When the ibo coupist struck in January 1966, Azikiwe was miraculously out of the country; Okpara was incidentally with the Cypriot Prme Minister. Very funny. Why did the ibo coupist kill Hajiat Latifat Ademulegun, the pregnant wife of Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun? The blood thirsty ibo coupist killed a pregnant and innocent Yoruba woman but they spared their own regional leaders, yet they want us to beilive that the coup was executed in good fate.
joeyfire:

I honestly can't say WHY those two Igbo men were appointed VC of UI and Unilag but I can ask WHY NOT? A fulani man was Mayor of Enugu at that same time as we all know. A Yoruba man was also chief accountant in Enugu at the time and of course there were qualified Igbo accountants for the job. Unless you can help me with facts as to the better qualified Yoruba sons who were intentionally left out I really can't answer that. I believe that Nigeria then was a very different load from the divided mess of today. I believe politicians like Akintola divided this country and prompted questions like what you have asked.

As for why the coupists (who were not all Igbo by the way) didn't kill Zik and Okpara, let us not forget that Zik was not in the country when the coup hit and Okpara didn't shoot at them, he was hosting the President of Cyprus when they came for him. You will be incorrect to allude to the fact that the coup plotters aimed to take out every single person in government. Not so. Read "Why we struck" by Ademoyega (one of the coupists) and you will get a clearer picture

I want to ask you a question, was Azikiwe not a ceremonial president?? Not even as powerful as a First Lady? What power would be have had to impose two unqualified Igbo men in the region of Awolowo that he respected and almost feared? You haven't given me the facts that I asked for by the way. You are only stating your theory not facts. Please don't overlook the fact that the mayor of our then capital was a fulani man and the chief accountant Mr. Willoughby was a Yoruba man.

So are you implying that Zik stayed away to avoid the coup? Well I can say this... If Zik was part of the coup then why did he need to "run away". He could as well have stayed knowing he wouldnt have been touched. You see, all conjecture and opinion but not facts. Are you also alluding to the fact that Okpara invited President Makarios to avoid the coupists?? These sorts of speculations can be twisted any way. Its unfortunate that politicians like Akintola and Ahmadu Bello polluted the air with all these types of prejudice and bigotry.

Akintola told lies in that his hate speech and its very unfortunate the type of legacy he left behind.

Eni Njoku was made the V.C of Unilag a year before Nigeria became a republic. The republic constitution was drafted in 1963. Before then, Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first and only Nigerian to be the Governor General of the country. By virtue of his position, he was the Head of State of Nigeria representing the Queen. Azikiwe used his position to promote ibo greed and nepotism.
The 1963 republican constitution gave Azikiwe the power to make some appointment with the approval of the Prime Minister. Azikiwe abused this powers in favour of his ibo kinsmen

Ibo coupist killed Samuel Ladoke Akintola

Ibo coupist killed Ralph Shodeinde

Ibo coupist killed Samuel Ademulegun

Ibo coupist killed Hajiat Latifat Ademulegun(a pregnant woman)

..... but the ibo coupist found it hard to kill their own ibo leaders, and they want us to belive that the coup was a genuine revolution. Hahahaaaaa. I laugh in marginalisation

There were more Ibo politicians in govt than Yoruba politicians so tell me how many of the Ibo politicians were gunned down

Nigeria had 4 regions. The premier's of the 2 non Ibo regions were killed, okpara and osadebey who were Ibo spared

The prime minister was killed, his deputy Azikwe was spared,

All the Ibo ministers were privy to the coup which was why some of them resigned from the govt 24hrs before the coup

One of those snakes called Jaja Wachukwu was even begged by Balewa not to quit and on the day of the coup while Ibo soldiers were killing other leaders. They got to Wachukwu house and told him he isn't one of their target.

Ifeajuna after killing Balewa and okotie-eboh was Hosted by Michael okpara for a job well done who facilitated his escape to Ghana

In the military hierarchy, Ironsi was spared but Maimalari Ademulegun, Sodeinde Lagerma Pam were all killed

What about the UI VC appointing 105 Igbos and just 3 Yorubas out of 108 staff?

Your posts are dripping with prejudice and malice but I honestly cant see any facts to back them up. Abeg help me with some of them:-

1. How could Okpara have hosted Ifeajuna when he was in detention in Enugu and how could he have helped him escape? According to Ademoyega (one of the coupists) Ifeajuna fled to Lagos after running to Enugu to meet up with Don Okafor and Chris Okigbo who drove him to Seme border

2. If you have your facts on the coup you will know that the coup plotters at NO time intended or even had the manpower to arrest every member of the 1st republic. Please give more details on the officers you said went to Jaja Wachuku's just to "inform" him that he wasnt a target grin

3. How many yoruba politicians were killed by the coupists? Why was Akintola killed and Fani Kayode spared? For purpose of clarity, Zik was not deputy prime minister, he was ceremonial president. Moreover he was not in the country so how did the coupists "spare" him?

4. You claim that all igbo ministers knew about the coup before and that some resigned. Please who were the ones that resigned 24hrs before the coup?

Can you imagine? You come to somebody's house, met 108 pieces of meat in his pot of soup and ate 105 of the meat. Telling the owner of the house to take 3 meat and go Bleep himself.

Mulikat was shunned by SW ACN, who chose Tambuwal instead.
What right do Yorubas have to complain thereafter?

Did ACN select any elected Igbo amongst them for post and Ndiigbo scuttled it?

How exactly was SW marginalized my GEJ?

By the way, I think the 1966 coup was an Awolowo( Yoruba) masterminded coup and here is why:

1. Fajuyi, a Yoruba, was a mentor to the likes of Nzeogwu and not only supported their coup, but also made inputs on how they should go about it. This was why he was marked for death by the counter coup northern junta. To conceal this and sell their Igbo coup propaganda, the Yoruba print media launched the falsehood of Fajuyi begging for IronsI life being the reason for his death, but we know better.

2. Up until 1967, Awolowo was the only Nigerian who had once plotted to usurp a seating government, ala civilian coup, he had antecedents. He would also attempt a second civilian coup later against IBB which culminated to his death.

3. The coup plotters listed Awolowo as the man they had in mind to install as the president should the coup have been successful.

4. The coup plotters carefully eliminated Awolowo main rival, Akintola, who had already emasculated Awolowo and rendered him powerless in Yorubaland, alongside his accomplices in Saraduna and Balewa. This was needed to create a vacancy that Awolowo could fill right after the coup.

It's as simple as it is, without the coup plotters striking and eliminating Akintola, Balewa and Saraduna, Awo would have rot in prison and if he managed to come out, would have seen Akintola completely consolidate on his powers in Yorubaland with active help of Balewa and Saraduna.
The rate Akintola was spreading his wings in SW, with active connivance of Balewa and Saraduna, Awo knew that he had to get out of prison as fast as possible or slip into political oblivion forever.
The Biggest winner from the coup was Awolowo, co incidence?
I don't think so.

Bottomline: Any one can make up conjectures based on gut feelings, once a conclusion had been reached, finding conjectures to serve as observations and inferences is not hard, and this is exactly what Yorubas had done with their Igbo coup propaganda in those pre internet age when they controlled the print media in Nigeria.

The position of Governor General and President under the 1960 and 1963 constitutions were the same except for the title. I checked the constitution and it does not grant any power to President to appoint VCs of Universities arbitrarily as you are alleging.

So you mean Zik did all that and nobody called him out for abuse of power that he did not have?

I guess you read the Aba made version of the constitution. The President, Azkiwe had the powers to make appointments. The constitution even gave him the powers to appiont Judges after the Privy Council In London ceasaed being the Highest Court of the land. Offcourse he was called out. Akintola pointed out Azikiwe's nepotism, that was why the latter was killed by the blood sucking bo coupists.

Whatever they say does not negate the fact that they killed the leaders of other regions and left theirs.

Also, it does not negate the fact that they rejoiced to high heavens when that useless Drunk master of Otuoke was marginalising the Yorubas.
