In as much as having popular votes doesn't translate to being the best candidate, it goes a very long way to saying a lot.
However, like u have said, i won't add more to this. . . .if u are an Easterner (if believe u are) and u live in Nigeria pls take a trip and return with ur verdict. . . i won't dispute.

Adigun
Do you know how many Ogun indigenes living in lagos because of the situation of Ogun?
Same applies to indigene of Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti and likes?
Are the Anambrarians living in Asaba more than those living in Lagos?
Aside Fashola, i don't think there is any siting Governor in a Yoruba State better than Peter Obi in terms of achievement!!
I stand to be corrected. Come with facts too. . . .I can bet you the Adigun guy have never been to Asaba talkless of Onitsha.
The nearest to Obi is Olusegun Mimiko and he is even yet to prove himself with just a little over 1 year in office.

Segun Oni? (Fayemi will send him packing soon)
Olagunsoye Oyinlola? (Obasanjo's thug?)
Gbenga Daniel? (When he's done commiting murder and destabilising his state Politically, we'll know)
Adebayo Alao Akala? (Grandson abi Godson of Amala Politics, even his Ogbomosho kindred are complaining)
Bukola Saraki? (Something is on ground for him but when he's done being the head of Yar'adua's cabal, then we'll take him seriously)

I hate making arguments along tribal lines and u are pushing me to but i won't.
Regardless, as long as u are not from Lagos state, u are not in any position to criticise the Anambra governor.
If you've lived in Anambra, pls come up with your grouse. . .

Onlytruth. . . .U have said it all. . . . . some people are scared!! Scared of their own failures!!

Kobojunkie:

Well, the most popular is not always the best. In fact, majority of the time, that is the case. That Obi got re-elected by the people does not in anyway infer Obi is the BEST GOVERNOR or is an excellent governor. You can see how that would not apply in other cases. Take for instance Yar adua's 2 terms as governor of katsina state. He was re-elected by the people DOES NOT mean he was really an excellent leader/governor. We all know the truth now as we are better able to judge his record during those 8 years. *** Gosh I really have a problem with this man being left to run a state for 8 solid years with next to no reasonable accomplishment in all that time, but then again, it is a nigeria-wide issue*** grin

Lady, the key words in your argument are 'not always'. . . . .we are yet to see If Obama was the best. Surely he was the most popular.
Two things though; What makes a particular candidate Popular?
How do we actually know the best?

Of course its not until s/he serves. . . hence if s/he doesn't serve, their is no way we term him the best.
By this i think i can deviate to some extent to say the most popular can be said to be the best until proven otherwise.
Most certainly by his acts in office will prove whether s/he is or not. . . . .i am still waiting for someone to tell me who was the best candidates in Anambra elections?
Of course if u go by the assertion above, i can say there was no one or that all of them are. . . . .unless the person is an Awolowo, who was the best President Nigeria never had

Again, comparing Obi to Yar'adua?
Pse, Peter Obi beats him hands down with just one term in office.
Yar'adua is a pathetic case of what Northern Oligarchy does to development. . . . . .his quiet and silent disposition helped in hiding him and his failings. . . .most of us didn't know much about him until his failures started manifesting as Nigeria's President.
I can bet you also that over 40% of voters in the 2007 Election didn't know who was Umaru Musa Yar'adua until the election campaigns proper. .
His imposition was one of the numerous sins of Obasanjo against this nation. . . . this guy has set this country back by 10yrs. . .in can't start counting. The most painful to me is the death of our foreign relations and policy. . .seems am drifting!!

Of course i can't say Obi is the 'BEST' or "Excellent" depending on the definition you give it. Its a relative term.
Cos going by western standards and the real definition of that those two words, NO Governor in Nigeria can qualify to be conferred with those Two words. . . . if you think so, lets compare with Ghana and maybe SA!!

That said, i grade Obi on three things, one is his contribution to santising the Political space in Anambra, his financial probity and making government not to look like an all comers affairs. . . . . 80% of Commissioners in Anambra State are not Partisan Politicians.
the Politicians amongst them have all resigned. . .i can't say much about the SAs and PAs. . . .again, a radical approach to development of all sectors of the State. . . . .and then, "By Nigerian standards", being very fair and open in Government business.

Pls anyone who know's, where is Emeka Etiaba? When i look at this guy's body language during and before the elections,
I weep for the Nigerian youth. . . . but i believe its all the same all round. . . .he is a true case of what disloyalty is.

I bet he must be licking his wounds wherever he is now!!

Kobo, i am ready to engage in more arguments over this. . . .as long as its devoid of any rancour!!

Having popular support is having popular support, does not mean the best. You don't know where I am from and it should not be an issue in the discourse. You are free to add more to the list of achievements, but what you have put altogether does not seem to warrant the review of "he's done more than a lot", I don't know if I would even give Fashola such a glowing review.

And you are right, Obama was the popular candidate, and you are right, we are yet to see what substance he brings with him. But that is another whole country and system from what we have to deal with in Nigeria.

Emperoh:

Two things though; What makes a particular candidate Popular?
How do we actually know the best?

Well, in Nigeria, it is definitely easier to become popular by exhibiting dubious character than by doing the right things. I mean we only need to look at the caliber of leaders we have in that country to know that to be the case. People will readily vote for a 419er just because his name is out there, and for the amount of money he has been able to amass during his many 419 runs than they would a serious member of the populate who has not only dedicated his life to serving his community but also building a solid reputable record as a true leader.

Dude, I hope you know that each individual has his or her own way of measuring achievement. You posted a list of things that IMPRESSED you of Obi, earlier, and to be honest with you, I would not consider a lot of what you have on that list when gauging the achievements of my governor, especially in the year 2010, and considering the allotment and funds available to the same government in the amount of time we are considering.

Emperoh:

Are you sure you can without a doubt conclude that Peter Obi beats Yar adua government hands down? We are talking of  Katsina, a state that produces next to nothing with a next to dirt poor populace, and Anambra, a state that remains center of commerce in the eastern belt earning 10’s of millions more in allotment each year from oil and other resources. Are you sure you assessment is an accurate one?

Excellence and Best now RELATIVE terms? I will ask that we desist from such as it is an unfair way to argue on this sort of issues. We are dealing with issues that concern HUMAN beings and last I checked those in the west ARE human beings. I don’t see why one group should aim for less than the other group. After all, would you send your children to a school that is considered only the best by Nigerian standards when you can send them to the best school by WORLD standards for free?  I know this logic of mine may seem a bit cockeyed, but the word globalization implies the world is turning from using such terms as WESTERN STANDARDS to applying GLOBAL STANDARDS when it comes to governance and all that applies to humans, or do you think this is a wrong way of looking at things even in AFRICA today?

Anambra is not amongst the States receiving the 13% Oil producing States Derivation fund.
Its IGR is not up to N1bn even though the potential to earn more than N1bn is there. . . .its amongst the lowest states in terms of Federal Allocation 26 out of 36 states. . . . . That said, i would wish we had someone who is familiar with Katsina State to give us some stats.

It is no secret that we have a collection of 419ers and corrupt individuals out there campaigning or occupying one leadership position or another. And we do have a way of making sure such people do not get to run for office, however, I think it will be unfair, and dishonest of us to pretend the blame is on these corrupt individual. I disagree with your assertion that there was absolutely nothing on ground when Obi first came in. We had laws on the books that worked way before Obi came in. Ngige did a good job with some of the basics in his short time before Obi. Obi did not come in to a state that has absolutely nothing; he came into an already developing state and so he had so many of the basics to work with.

Anambra does not have to be among the states receiving 13% oil funds each month; the state already has access to funds from resources and taxes, in addition to allocations, which cannot be compared to what Katsina receives now and even during Yar adua’s time as governor of the state. From what I have been able to glean from some of the online resources, Anambra state generates about 4 billion each year and it gets about 50 Billion from the federal government. I am enjoying your arguement with Emperoh but i disagree with the bolded.Having laws on gound is different from reality.

Ngige development was all about road and nothing else.No plan just build roads.

Simple state secretriate where government is supposed to be run was non existent and government activitis were run from villages.

Anambra a developng state before Obi?More like a chaotic state.

Re: Gov Peter Obi Sworn In For Second Term In Awka Anambra State by Kobojunkie: 11:03pm On Mar 19, 2010
@Asha80, when I say we had seriously good laws in the books long before Obi came in the picture, I mean all he had to do on the MOST part was look into implementation. We talk of government sometimes as if they are coming into a complete desert situation and have to look left and right for brand new ways of accomplishing goals. That is not the case; Has never “REALLY” been the case in Anambra(the state was created under military rule and thereby inherited military statutes that already existed in other states), and certainly not the case in any other state for the recent governors.

So, no, Obi did not have to RECREATE policies, let alone start from scratch as we assert here. He had something to work with; a lot of the basics were in place. And as you confirmed in your own post, he did not have to worry about building some of the roads since Ngige took it upon himself to focus his attention on a lot of those during his short time as governor of Anambra. Many of the roads, by the way, where left to decay under the last Obi administration, and some had to be REBUILT as a result of that.
Now, I don’t have much detail on other issues Ngige tackled, or attempted to, during his time as governor so we can maybe delve more into what was available for Obi to work with but I can confirm that he did work on roads as you stated.

On the issue of Anambra being a developing state before Obi came in as governor. I need clarification here please. If you confirm that Ngige spent time developing the much of the roads, how then can we not consider the state a developing state under Ngige?

I wish Mbadinuju,Etiaba(during her short spell)and Ngige(apart from roads) did that.

He had something to work with; a lot of the basics were in place.

Did you watch the videos  posted?Yes burnt down government house, judiciary, schools closed down for up to a year and no secretariate as good as any basics you can imagine.

I hope you know that most of the roads Ngige built are within Idemili axis of the state while other parts were left to suffer.

Obi left Ngige built roads to decay?Do you have proof? And who told you that the roads have decayed? Name the Ngige roads that decayed that Obi rebuilt.

Now, I don’t have much detail on other issues Ngige tackled,

Because there is nothing to detail

If you confirm that Ngige spent time developing the much of the roads, how then can we not consider the state a developing state under Ngige?

like i said above Ngige concetrated on the dmili axis f the state where he incidentaly is from so i do not know how that equates to much.Only idemili parts for 3 yrs? What happened to onitsha, nnewi, awka towns let alone inter town and village roads.

Yes t was developing in chaos.

As I told you earlier, your question was a silly one and thats why I deliberately ignored . Emperoh wasted his time to pen down some of Okwute's achievements;predictably, you didnt disappoint me as you kept on asking him thesame silly question.

LOL. If that is what you got from then thread then that is your own concern. You couldn't name even ONE, I repeat, ONE achievement, and now you are trying to feign some non chalant attitude of 'not willing to indulge my "silly questions"'. Highly amusing considering you seemed to have time to post lengthy replies that were devoid of reasons for your very high praise. It seems to me you did not know what you were talking about, so would it be out of order to say there was some element of 'blind followership' to it?  smiley I mean, how can you say something is the most amazing thing and not even give any reason why it is that way to you? You really just expect people to take your word for it? You didn't know what you were talking about, just let it go. Now when people ask you why Peter Obi might have been a candidate to root for after all, you can feign inherent knowledge and enlightenment about the issue by regurgitating @Emperoh's points smiley

I wish Mbadinuju,Etiaba(during her short spell)and Ngige(apart from roads) did that.
Sure, I wish too they did that but that is NO REASON why Obi should not have done it and cannot do it now.
asha 80:

Did you watch the videos posted?Yes burnt down government house, judiciary, schools closed down for up to a year and no secretariate as good as any basics you can imagine.
This happened, I believe in 2004; while Ngige was still governor, correct me if I am wrong please. I don’t see how a SECRETARIAT building constitutes BASIC for any government.
During his 34 months as Governor, Ngige may not have re-built the government house, but I would say he did show, even after the fires, that government can exist without the buildings you are concerned about. If you agree, then we can say that the buildings were NOT basics for government. Though necessary, they are not to be considered BASICS for good governance.

Essentially, I am not here trying to make Ngige the mark for measure. Definitely not! what I am trying to say, by constantly referring to him here, is that Obi did have basics to work with and so we ought to measure his government fairly rather than buying into the idea that he came into a desert, decrepit state.

asha 80:

I hope you know that most of the roads Ngige built are within Idemili axis of the state while other parts were left to suffer.
Does it really matter WHERE the roads were built? I thought we have established that he did build the roads. If you ask me, the man was there less than 2 years and we at least saw a start. I am not sure what the motive was behind the move and I cannot state for a fact that he did not do it for selfish reasons, considering he was fighting to stay governor during the same time.

asha 80:

Obi left Ngige built roads to decay?Do you have proof? And who told you that the roads have decayed? Name the Ngige roads that decayed that Obi rebuilt.
Because there is nothing to detail
Are all the roads in pristine condition? I am not able to get at information at this time but I can, at a later date, research this and get back to you with answers, but I do remember debating this a couple of months ago, actually when Soludo announced he would be running for governorship, and was presented details of this then. Like I said, I will hold on this until I can present you with info but I believe he did let some of the roads without maintenance.

asha 80:

First what the laws you feel Obi did not implement?

Alright tell me what u think are the basics for good governance.

Obi simply built the sectretariate because as u said it is NECESSARY for smooth running of government and not having govrnment agencies in far flung villages.

Yes government can exist without buildings but government work has to be done in an organised manner and not in a chaotic way.

Yes it might not be the basics for good governance but an atmosphere where government work is smoothly carried out is needed which the previous goveors failed to do to provide for the  basics that i want u to list for me.

Does it really matter WHERE the roads were built? I thought we have established that he did build the roads. If you ask me, the man was there less than 2 years and we at least saw a start. How is 34 months less than 2 yrs  .As for his motives i will not look beyod his fall out with his godfather Chris Uba and the sudden feeling that he had to bring the public to his side thereby embarking on what most anambrarian wanted at that time ROADS.

Are all the roads in pristine condition? If you are not sure of somethig please do not say it.If you are not sure then why did you state that

Many of the roads, by the way, where left to decay under the last Obi administration, and some had to be REBUILT as a result of that.

As per whether the roads are in pristine condition have u been there to know or are u relying on hear say?

Believe is different from reality. You of all people should know that.

Like I stated earlier, I am not concerned with where the Governor starts from as long as he starts something meaningful.

seems you have soft spot for ngige.

I am not sure this is about laws that have been implemented or not implemented. I believe I have been clear in stating that the reason for the references is to show clearly that the basics have been in place and not ABSENT as initially claimed.

asha 80:

Alright tell me what u think are the basics for good governance.
This is NOT about what I think are the basics for good governance. Again, I think I have been clear in stating with example that the basics for governance was in place, even after the fire of 2004, as we have on record that Ngige was still able to run the same state even after the fact.

asha 80:

Obi simply built the sectretariate because as u said it is NECESSARY for smooth running of government and not having govrnment agencies in far flung villages.
I DID NOT state that was it necessary for smooth running of government. I simply stated that a secretariat can be considered good for government, but the absence of one cannot be used as a valid reason for why a government failed in doing the job it was meant to.

asha 80:

Yes government can exist without buildings but government work has to be done in an organised manner and not in a chaotic way.

Sure, at least you agree that even in chaotic situations, government can still get the overarching job done.

asha 80:

Yes it might not be the basics for good governance but an atmosphere where government work is smoothly carried out is needed which the previous goveors failed to do to provide for the basics that i want u to list for me.
Yes, during his administration, the original buildings were burnt down, but that does not take away from the fact that he was still able to continue without.

asha 80:

How is 34 months less than 2 yrs .As for his motives i will not look beyod his fall out with his godfather Chris Uba and the sudden feeling that he had to bring the public to his side thereby embarking on what most anambrarian wanted at that time ROADS.
Maths error! I cannot comment much on the motive issue since I am even 70% on what it was.

asha 80:

If you are not sure of somethig please do not say it.If you are not sure then why did you state that

Oh, I am sure. I just do not have details to present in order to answer your question there. Two different things here! I could reverse the same question ” Do you have details that support the stance that Obi has actually worked on maintaining the roads that Ngige built?”, pose it to you and, you would maybe see how difficult it is sometimes to present facts when it comes to Nigerian issues such as the one you asked of. Shall we try it?

asha 80:

As per whether the roads are in pristine condition have u been there to know or are u relying on hear say? Believe is different from reality. You of all people should know that. seems you have soft spot for ngige.
My belief shapes my reality in all wise. I know he has not maintained all the roads built by his predecessor. I am not a stranger to Anambra state, neither am I new to the way people go gaga when politics is brought to the table.

I don’t have a soft spot for Ngige. If he were the subject of this discussion, I would axe him with the same fervor as I am going at claims of Obi being an excellent governor. You of all people on here should know I hold no soft spot for anyone when it comes to politics as I believe it should never be personal.
Ngige is an ex-governor. Obi has been governor for the past 46 months and is getting yet another term. I am more concerned about our making sure we get our money’s worth from these so-called leaders, rather than playing sides for no meaningful reason.

Asha80,

Thinks for coming in when i went on a hiatus. . . . I guess it gives me another perspective to argue from.

KJ
I really don't have so much time to analyse your statements one after the other.
I hate to try to compare Ngige and Obi cos there is a wide gulf in between them in terms of achievement assuming they are compared 34 months apiece. . . . . . . .his motive was very clear. . . .building just roads showed him as trying to buy public sentiments. . . .it was that clear

However, i am not after Ngige here. , i want to diffuse that notion that there something on ground for Obi to work with
I wonder if Roads alone consisted of something enough to start from? What of other sectors? Education, Health, Sanitation, Security?
What of macro-economic indices, developmental economics and the likes. . , i kept telling people that the true colour of Mr. Ngige will be known assuming he won the last elections. . . . . .its not gainsaying that he used that opportunity to launch himself into Political relevance

Having said that, i would appraciate it if u had told me that Ngige, regardless of his motives, initiated and waged the a very critical and important war against the charlatans and renegades that pummelled Anambra State financially. . . .I mean, Xris Uba had an IPO of N10m every month
not to talk of the security votes Mbadinuju gave him and all that?

has anyone actually asked How Uche Ekwunife came about her wealth? this is a story for another day. And like u said, its a clear case of 419ners parading as good people in order to get in power.

Haven said the above, Obi i know started most developmental indices in Anambra. . . . .Anambra was just an enitity with close to zilch going on!!

I will come back at a more relaxed time to pick on your posts one after the others!!!

Happy Wknd!!!

You sound biased and contradictory.
Firstly you said you are not here for Ngige and the you go ahead to talk of Ngiges true colors.
You talk of  Education, Health, Sanitation, Security shocked shocked?
What of macro-economic indices, developmental economics and the likes. .
Any proof on such indices ?
And how Obi improved it.

Give achievements like this
Before Ngige, teachers were owed 9 months salary areas.
Ngige cleared them.
Pensioners were hardly paid.
Ngige cleared them.
The state of roads in Anambra was worrysome.
Even the blind cannot deny Ngiges impact.

Give me figures, facts and proof to Obis imapact and stop being evasive.

Every governor since the inception of Anambra has always used this misconception that Anambra was a poor state.
Ngige debunked the claim.
And you are trying to parade such a lie.

Anambra has always been a state undermined by the outright insincerity/greed of its citizens.
Unfortunately, it will continue to be so for the next few years.
With what I can see in towns like Onitsha and Nnewi since Obis inception.
Some people can still come out to praise the guy.
It just goes to show how bereft of expectation the people of that state are.

However Oga, no one has as much time as u do, to solely go to Anambra and start taking pictures just to convince you.
If you sincerely wish to see Mr. Obi's achievement, kind leave what you are doing, get on a trip to Anambra and satisfy your yearnings.

Congrats to Obi.

But I dont see why his joy should be that of the masses.

He hasn't made any notable change in four years.

Not even one legacy.

I think the south-south are more ready.
