The new school curriculum is really generating a lot of heat as many prominent Nigerians are speaking up against it. The curriculum removes Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) from schools and made its study as only a theme, while it Introduces Islamic Arabic Studies alongside French as subjects.

With the new arrangement, a pupil would have to study either of Islamic Arabic Studies or French, pointing out that the end result is that a Christian student will be left with no option than to settle for Islamic Arabic Studies since French teachers are more or less non-existent in secondary schools. – thisday

1. @OP, Why did you not inform your readers that what is currently being implemented was the recommendation of an Educational Summit in 2014 made through National Educational in 2014 (NES 2014). That one of the recommendation of this summit was that students were taking too many subjects (15-18 in extreme cases) and this was affecting their performances in exams. The recommendation was that these subjects be reduced to a maximum 10 and minimum 8. The summit recommendation was endorsed for execution by GEJ.

2. Subjects were "affinity-grouped" together to be able to streamline them to the target maximum of 10. As such when subject as grouped like these, each of the former subjects are then classified into themes which the provision for students to pick their preferred theme. I think it is only reasonable and responsible that you report the truth, anything short is irresponsibility and senselessness. Both CRK and IRK are classified under various themes. Students can then choose their preferred theme. There was nothing done to CRK that same was not done to IRK. Both CRK and IRK are classified under the subject Religion and National Values (RNV). on the NERDC website http://www.nerdc.org.ng/eCurriculum/CurriculumSTructure.aspx, it was clearly stated that Separate classes should be run for CRS theme and IS theme

3. I passed through secondary school in the late 80s and early 90s. Even as at then, the options were Arabic Studies/French. There is nothing called Islamic Arabic Studies. Arabic Studies as always been known as Arabic Studies.

5. CAN or political CAN is becoming more of an embarrassment, and will soon be confined to oblivion. One will expect a serious body like can to seek understanding on one part, before jumping into embarrasing conclusions. On the other, I would have expected can to be one of the pressure groups pressing for improved quality of education, addressing infrastructural deficits in govt schools, working with govt to increase enrollment rates. It would seem to me that CAN's evangelism strategy is to adopt negative propaganda.............

Arabic is just a language, one of the most spoken in the world. I have nonblood related uncle in an Arab country who is not a Muslim, is a doctor but yet understands Arabic. Again I did Arabic in school, I have Arabic textbooks and they have nothing to do with Islam. You can choose to remain in denial, I don't give two cents, that's what you are good at.

The truth alwaus remain the truth, you can try twist it to deceive gullible people but I'm not one of them. I did French, I did Arabic and I did religious studies, I know the differences between each of them. Go to school and study it, you might know the difference too, there's still hope.

Only the new testament was written in Greek as was reported. The ones before was Aramaic and Hebrew. But to look at it critically, the original language of the Jews is Hebrew which is where Jesus, Moses and the rest originated from. That makes Hebrew of more sentimental values to Christians. But still, its just a language.

The reason people are against Arabic is because that's the language of the prophet, who was an Arab, and the language the Quran was written in. But what they fail to understand is that Arabic is still just a language. There are Arabic bibles too so what's the big deal?

Personally, I did Arabic in school and it was in no way related to religious studies. Just same as learning French, my name is this, this is a book, that is a house and stuffs like that. I would have loved to learn many more languages, I'm even interested in Hebrew but that won't make me a Jew nor will it mean adding it to our curriculum is having an ulterior motives for something else.

In Africa alone, Arabic is one of the most spoken languages, including French which is already in our curriculum and Swahili. If you want them to add more alternative, say so not shouting about an ulterior motive.

You got the last phase of your writeup wrong actually. He did speak Aramaic but the original language of the Jews, which is what they all were is Hebrews. And please if you like, you can conduct a research and you will see that Christians actually favour hebrews.

Thank you for mentioning that Arabic has been in the curiculum for long, but only muslim schools do it over french. So how would you know if it has actually helped if you dont live around those that did it. I know personally those who did it and it helped them when they got jobs in Arabic speaking countries, and i dont mean religion related business like doctors, enginerrs, oil sector workers, etc
