Hello,

I am extremely grateful for all the support I have received from this Nairaland family especially @Baeboss, @Nef and @Princeadeade.

I flew British Airways at 32 weeks plus on 14th June, ( My Uncle in the US booked my flight with his dollar card as the equivalent I got from travel agencies wasn't less than a million naira).

Before travelling, I ensured I did the following:

1) Paid my entire hospital bills( Dr+Hospital) using Form A and Dr Z.
2) Wrote a letter of Change of intent to the embassy about 3 times(lol).Got a generic response as well as a personalised one acknowledging receipt of email.
3) Received a letter of acceptance from the Gynaecologist showing receipt of payment which was meant for the POE.
4) Ran all necessary tests/ got my medical records as well as fit to fly from hospital back in Nigeria.
5) Carried adequate cash to sustain me during my stay( Applied for PTA at Skye bank, received dollar equivalent the following day. Also got additional dollars from a friend who didn't exhaust his PTA).
6) Jotted down the contact details of my host and pre informed her of the date and time of entry into the US.
7) Carried vital documents as well as change of clothes and shoes in my carry on bag.
cool Booked for a wheel chair( Made things so easy for me).

Finally, here is my Point of Entry/Travel experience(POE=Dallas, Final Destination=Houston):

I got special assistance as I was wheeled towards the self service machine.
The guy did everything for me. We immediately proceeded to the CBP officer because my luggage had not come in( BA(Los)-AA(LHR)-AA(DFW)-IAH).

CBP: How are you doing Ma'am?
Me: Fine, thank you.
CBP :Do you have over ten thousand dollars on you?
Me: No, I don't.
CBP:What are you coming to do in the US?
Me: To rest and most importantly for Childbirth.
CBP: Oh, you are pregnant!
Me: Yes Sir.
CBP: When are you due?
Me: July/August
CBP:Stamps me in for 6 months and says,
"Welcome to the United States and I wish you safe delivery".
Me: Thank you.

I spent about 2 minutes with the CBP officer.

Thank you all for the wealth of knowledge as well as pieces of advice.

My appointment is tomorrow and as my delivery day draws near I pray God almighty grants me as well as other Moms-to-be 'Supernatural Delivery'.
I shall come back to testify and share more beautiful experiences with you all.
Love.

Anyways, quite shocked to see questions on how to rectify not telling the VO at the interview 'we' were pregnant (or they didn't ask 'us' about it) pop up here still. Una get mind oh, that ought to be an abomination by now! Make una coolu-coolu, coolu temper joor.... On leave and holidaying, will just do some catch up on this thread sha.

abujaniv:
Hello. We don’t normally post in this thread, but it seemed worthwhile to drop in and correct some misconceptions. We say this a lot, but it bears repeating: Birth tourism is legal in the US provided the applicant is open about their intention and pays the medical expenses in full. This means that the applicant should declare any such intention they have at the Embassy/Consulate and again at the port of entry.

If it happens that the applicant gets pregnant well after the initial visa interview, they will have the opportunity to make their intention, medical preparations and financial resources known at the POE. However, it will remain up to Customs and Border Patrol whether to allow that applicant into the country. Some are not, and they are put on the next flight home. This must be extremely uncomfortable for a heavily pregnant person, to spend 15-20 hours on a flight to America, several more hours being questioned, then another 15-20 hours on a plane home. This is what we want to avoid.

Onto some other misconceptions:
The concept of the “change of intent” letter is not valid. These e-mails are not read nor correlated with the applicant’s file. Some people who send such letters may get a form letter in response, but it is informational in nature and in no way confers permission to amend the declared purpose of travel. What matters is what you declare at the Embassy/Consulate and at the POE. After the fact e-mails do not carry any weight.

Some applicants say, “I applied for only the B2 visa to declare my medical intent.” The B1/B2 visa categories are conjoined, so applying for only one does not make any difference. Other applicants say, “I appeared at the window with a big belly,” as if this alone is enough to declare their medical intent. Again, the responsibility is on the applicant to be honest about what they plan to do in the US.

Other considerations:
Medical care is expensive in the US, and costs can escalate dramatically if there are complications.
Credibility is paramount in the US visa process. If visa officers detect any deception or obfuscation, no amount of excuses, documents or receipts will make up for the loss of credibility.

Good Morning,

So I got my B1/B2 visa. Never lied at the interview. I was just asked if i was going on holiday and about my work. I said yes.

Travelling to have my baby was never even on the plan until a few weeks ago due to need for better medical attention and I was not satisfied with the hospital i was using even though i had changed hospitals twice. and asides that my MIL who would ordinarily help out has been in the US for a while now and asked that i come rather than be here without help as she wont be able to make it down to Nigeria before my EDD due to the fact that she is undergoing treatment.

I was searching for something else and i stumbled on this platform. So after reading extensively, i called the embassy and asked if i could have my baby in the US tho i didnt state earlier, they asked for my passport details to verify. The lady who answered me said she could not give information as regards that but referred me to the CBP website to read up on the risks.
Do you think i have complicated the situation by calling the embassy?
Kindly advise.
I have all my funds and have booked a Dr's appointment.

Thank you.

Really? I honestly do not believe this. If you didn't have the visa, would your MIL still have told you to come to the US so she can help take care of the baby? I am saying all of this because if I had a US visa and I know I can birth an American citizen using that visa....Heck yeah!! I am gonna do that. Were you pregnant before the interview?

I am assuming yo were pregnant during interview, because u left that out.

In my opinion, go for your holiday, visit your mother in law and take tours of the hosp and the doctor's office (you already have Dr's appointment sef). Return to work and then travel back for birthing, then you have not lied.

That better medical care can be found in lagos and abuja hospitals, so make up your mind on ur main reason for travelling to the US to birth your baby.

Hi,
I opened an account with Bank of America 2 days ago and they only requested for my international passport with visa in it.
Maybe you should try another branch.
Are you in Houston?
Maybe it depends on your location.
