Daily insight Foreign inflows into Nigerian equities jump 403.1% in May-17 The NSE recently published its Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) report for May-2017. According to the report, total market transactions from January to May surged 52.6% to N715.0bn compared to same period in 2016, driven by FPI transaction which rose 73.5% y/y to N328.7bn. Similarly, FPIs YTD participation rate increased from 40.4% in 2016 to 45.9% as at May 2017 slashing domestic participation to 54.0%. Expectedly, total transaction increased sharply in the month of May, thanks to the introduction of the I&E window by the CBN in April. FPI transactions expanded 3.2x from N22.5bn in April to N95.2bn in May. Domestic transaction also improved 38.4% in May but participation rate dropped sharply from 59.1% in April to 53.7%. Increased FPIs transaction in the local market confirms our earlier observation that renewed foreign interest in Nigerian equities has been responsible for the recent rally in equities. According to the NSE, monthly foreign inflows to equities jumped 4x to N73.0bn in May, outpacing outflows which rose 1.7x to N22.0bn. The All Share Index is up +23.8% YTD, +12.7% MTD and +3.6% WTD. We expect performance to remain stable in the interim. 2 Likes |
