From 1960 till roughly 1985, Nigeria's education system was modestly decent. However, the oil crises of early 80s plus the post-Babangida SAP years essentially underfunded the sector and rendered it prostrate. Many Nigerian professors who got their first degree and PhDs from Nigeria that are lecturing overseas are often from that period, 1960-1985. Those are the golden era.

However, how would a chemistry PhD, for instance, from Nigeria of today who has never SEEN not to talk of using such instruments as basic as SQUID, NMR Spectrometer, Xray Diffractometer, Mass Spectrometers etc be able to teach undergraduates in western countries who use these instruments on daily basis? The core of science and engineering training is "hands on" experience in designing and synthesizing especially at PhD level.

I'm currently in Alberta and my wife is a PHD student at one of the Unis.
Being accepted as a PHD candidate in Canada doesn't mean you are skipping MSC.
MSC students usually do about 5 to 9 taught courses after which they commence their research (6months research and 3 to 4 months report), while as a PHD student, you MUST still do the same courses within one or two years and then do your research for 2 to 3 years, and then write your report in 4-6 months. The only difference between MSC and PHD is the duration of your research( usually a difference of 2-3 years research). Remember you have to pass your candidacy exam immediately after your taught program(you are strongly advised to complete it in 1 year) before you are considered a PHD student. Your admission letter will have that conditional admission clause. If you don't pass your taught programs and then your candidacy, you will not be allowed to continue with your PHD.
Go and read up your Calculus, Advanced Thermodynamics, Heat transfer and Fluid Mechanics.

I appreciate your input bro. I think academically my supervisor knows a talent when he sees one. The guy is a professor emeritus. I think he's seeing what I'm not seeing yet. Don't you think someone can help you discover your destiny looking at your background. Talking about skipping MSc, I have a lot friends that have done it n came out successfully. My fear is i changed from Chemistry to Chemical Engineering and now about to skip MSc to PHD in Chemical Engineering. If it had been in Chemistry I for no bother. Don't say I'm confused cos I know what I want, in MSc I would be very comfortable and excel without fear but PhD, i don’t know what lies ahead for me. That's why I need advice from people who have schooled abroad. Thanks

I have a B.Sc Industrial Chemistry ( 4.01/5), Pgd Chemical Engineering ( Distinction ).

I applied for a Canadian admission for MSc.E Chemical Engineering. Normally for your admission to be successful you need to secure a supervisor whose research interest is similar to yours. I have done that and he encouraged me to apply. I submitted my application and after going through my application with other supporting documents like letter of motivation and others, he sent me a mail this afternoon that they want to consider me PhD instead of MSc I applied for. I'm very confused right now if to accept it or not considering high standard of education abroad as I use to hear, I haven't experienced foreign education before, this is my first. Please note my ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD. Please help me push to the front thread cos I need advice from experienced Nigerians who have studied abroad. Thanks. I appreciate

You don't always need masters to apply for PhD in UK for instance. A second class upper division like yours and above is all they need with the right motivation.

There are no major steps. The only thing you need to is to look for a supervisor and indicate your interest. That's all you need to do.
