This Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare thinks he is smarter than the other commissioners before him who overlooked these houses.

Being overzealous doesn't pay in this country.
Dora Akunyili learnt that the hard way.

I'd advise he thinks about his life and family first before he thinks of the Lagos flood.

After all,
Water will always find it's level.

Comments and people thinking like this is the reason why Nigeria is not growing.. Renew your thought process bro.m.

Headline is misleading.

Since when did Lekki, ikoyi, ogombo become estates?

And for the records, nobody can knock down any of the estates mentioned above. Not in a million years. Not on the days of sunday. Never!

I think this is an over simplistic look at a serious problem.

Every year rain falls in Lagos but there has been no devastating floods except the flash floods of 2011. Why are things different now?

Could this be flash floods- when too much rains falls all of a sudden?

Could it be an increasing rainfall pattern caused global warming? There were also serious floods in Benin and parts of the middle belt..

Could it be the sandfilling going on at Oworonsoki?

Could it be a pile up of several issues such as property built on drainages and so on?

Government needs to take an in depth look at worrisome flooding and come up with effective solutions.

You have only cited possible reasons for the floods but still have not come up with a better solution. Now, Sir/Madam, what in your opinion should government do? We need solutions and not theories.

Lol...these idio.ts are always acting like jesters. Didn't they collet tenement rates from all the houses in the estates mentioned? They didn't kn all along that the lands were drainage land? Stup.id 419 animals. Go a demolish make people sidon dey look you. Ordinary simple small pot holes, the idio.ts cannot fill but they want to break people's houses because of flood. So if to say flood no happen, them no go know say the buildings dey on top drainage or canal. Let them add banana island and eko Atlantic to the list.

It's simple.... Sue the government now!

Before any building is erected, their are requirements laid out by the government and by this, the government should be aware of the area the building is sited, check if it is in compliance with the existing standard and many more....

Who gave them the go ahead in the first place? STATE GOVT

Who verified the building plan and approved it? STATE GOVT

Who collected multiple taxes just for erecting a building? STATE GOVT

Who approved the C of O for the buildings? STATE GOVT

Who demolished poorman's building on flimsy excuse only to give the land to the rich for building? STATE GOVT

Who has been collecting land tenement rate as tax from the owners of the buildings? STATE GOVT

THERE ARE MANY MORE.... JUST SUE THE GOVERNMENT, CHIKENA!

I try to imagine your kind of person. Your comments are often subjective, negative, uninformed, hateful, and filled with pessimism ... Your kind are very hard to work with in a team due to their pessimistic and negative viewpoint to issues. As a Boss/CEO, you may not do well running an organization. Where do you work, Sir, because I noticed that you're always quick to shove your warped viewpoints down our throats on Nairaland. Change your mindset, please,if you must progress in life. Be more open-minded and objective in your reasoning. Good luck!

A lot of people just read headlines they don't read the content.

Its a pity.

I am still looking for where it was written that the whole eastate will be destroyed. Its houses that are built on canals or drainages in those areas that will be destroyed.

Story for the gods!!!

What was the government doing when these structures were being erected?

Maybe it was busy collecting all sorts of levies from same people that erected the structures and became blindfolded in performing it's own duty.

Take VGC as an instance; there is a natural and major drainage way or canal that is by the filling station by VGC were water was channeled to follow to the lagoon by same government but because of negligence on the side of the some government officials certain approvals was given to certain up coming estate to sand-fill or reclaim their properties.

In the process, because it wasn't supervised by appropriate person, even the water ways or canal were sand fill causing the whole water to return back to the entrance of VGC because water must find its level.

Also remember that during the construction of the new traffic light by VGC, that point was raised higher than it was before causing water to find it level at the VGC entrance that leads to the already blocked drainage.

SOLUTION: UNTIL APPRECIATE AUTHORITIES TAKE RESPONSIBILITY TO SUPERVISE AND MAKE SURE THINGS ARE DONE ACCORDINGLY AND NOT GET BLINDFOLDED BY REVENUES THAT WOULD BE GENERATED FROM THESE PEOPLE, WE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THESE SAME PROBLEM REPEATEDLY.

froz:
The Lagos State Government has ordered owners of buildings erected on drainage alignments and channels in several upscale areas to vacate their properties or face forceful demolition.

Some of the affected areas include:

1. Dolphin Estate,

2. Osborne Foreshore Estate,

3. Lekki,

4. Osapa London,

5. Ikota,

6. Ogombo and

7. Ikoyi.

The announcement given by the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, comes as the aftermath of devastating floods that put several lives in danger and wrecked severe damage on properties in the state a few weeks ago.

However, this step coming several weeks after the damage caused by the floods raises questions about the issue of regulation of construction in the state.

Several of the affected buildings have been erected for years, with no one bothering to ascertain their compliance with existing regulations. Instead, Governor Ambode came out to blame the low tax compliance level for government’s inability to control the situation.

While the orders, if followed thoroughly, might solve the issue of flooding, it only goes on to increase fears about the likelihood of other disasters happening due to delayed government

That is what El-rufai did in Abuja when he was FCT minister. That's why you hardly have flood issues in Abuja. All houses on flood plains and drainage were demolished.
