Hello Good People. Kindly help me on this matter as my case is quite unique and i'm still amazed as to the refusal.
i intend on attending a uni in the abroad( for laughs USA), i wrote this year's toefl and SAT and had scores of 96 and 1140 respectively and this is for someone that hasn't been in a classroom for 7years ( i graduated from secondary school in 2010 and i have been working since then,i have managed to own to branding offices here in yaba, i import flex and flock material for branding wears. sadly i haven't registered my company and that i intend on doing ASAP , about schooling in nigeria, i honestly feel its a waste of time as i have friends that are now learning tailoring four years after graduating , hence why i chose to just focus on my business and be dedicated ) fast forward to jan 2017, oribamishey i was lucky to meet an american online ( dont overthink it, its not a scam ) whom was super impressed as to my 'resilience' because i lost my mom right after highschool and dad has never been there, she paid for my sat tuition and toefl as well, anyways fast forward again to monday aug 7th, i went for a visa interview with her bank statement and sponsor's letter which she mailed to nigeria and also to the us consulate in lagos , clearly she has over $400,000 in her active bank account signed by CHASE , she declared her asset to be over $3M on her sponsor's letter and lo and behold the VO said '' i am not convinced by your ability to afford your school fees'' , he asked every question and i answered confidently with impeccable grammar ( not like it was needed or anything lol , just to impress him) , i told him i lost my mom right out of high school ( i suspect this to be the cause as he might feel i dont have any parent which might compel me to return but duh, i have a great life in nigeria, only one cant see free help and say no ) .. anyways, i was denied and it really pained my sponsor since she's spent over $4,500 on my tutition at MET ltd in ikeja and school and visa processing, sorry for the long epistle , dont judge me by my not so serious post, my case is just funny and i was just surprised by the VO's reason for the refusal. pls any advise as to what to do next, considering reapplying as my start date is August 21, but i feel i might get denied again. any suggestions
thanks

Hummm so someone u never met in person will just disclose their life details despite the poor reputation of 419 with nigerians out there.... just google fraud nigeria . Then an american with over 400,000 usd and 3M in assets ( how many average americans have that in the bank) . So i am not surprise at this : behold the VO said '' i am not convinced by your ability to afford your school fees''

And the person also has spent over $4,500 on you just like that.. all i can say is sorry about been delayed , maybe next time the Vo will believe

ALright.... . Time for a cuppa of tea

Bros,

Public Affairs and Public Administration are not the same.
How old are you?
Funny you brought up your dad's citizenship.
Why would you rather "immigrate" to the USA to go and study as an international student when you have HUGE benefits if you travel under the F1 or IR2

Your story is not adding up.

Keep exposing yourself

I see no reason why y'all are taking it hard on him, if one chooses to study even Fishery is it your business? Do u know d goals he has set down for himself?

Okiki,
My candid advise for you is to face your business squarely and get yourself enrolled into a part time degree program such UNILAG DLI. Stop indulging in self pity, you lost your mother and so what?. I lost mine forty years ago (in Form Two, JSS II equ.) but qualified as a Chartered Accountant ten years later, at the age of twenty-three.

If you're not careful you'll put yourself into big trouble. Are you that naive? Someone pitied you because you lost your mother, so she'll be taking up the responsibility to educate you "in the abroad". She'll expose her assets to a complete stranger and you don't see that as a bait.

See oyinbo man life dey very easy. They know you are going for "greener" pasture ( dont know if its really green like that)

All they want from you is come and show me (without misrepresenting) that 99% you will spend in class and 1 % doing paper wahala and. Side hustle

But the problem with most Nigerians is that they go to the embassy with a 50-50 (hustle and schooling) mindset and those folks are trained to keep you out when they detect the slightest of bullshit.

During visa interviews you have to be a sleek talker not a sneaky talker

That stuff didn't make sense to the VO. So, he ought to have explained clearly and then ask the VO to contact the school if he's in doubt.

Sometimes, when you are putting up defence, you have to make the listener understand that you aren't afraid or there's nothing fishy.

That is why also I normally focus on I-20 and admission letter first when talking with anyone for interview.

Take General SAT not Subject SAT for a start except if the school request for both and toefl too for some schools......... Then google full ride international students and you should get some hits . You can also check the HBCU (historical black colleges), some give full rides as well.

Most medicine are not directly straight , so you would have to do a 4 years Bsc then take the Mcat and then do another 4 years medical school . There are some direct medical program where you don't break it 4 to 4 but its fewer and more competitive

Good morning everyone...

I had my interview today at 6.30am. Nice looking lady in window 1. My passport was kept for "administrative processing" after the whole interview. I am terrible at recalling stuff. I sincerely apologize. I'll think write out a transcript later in the day.

Long story short, I was in the US under an H1b visa 9 years ago. I lost the job, then quickly applied to a school which admitted me. I then made a request for a change of status to F1 but the request was denied. After that I left the US. So I definitely had an overstay of about 4 to 5 months while my case was being reviewed. I hadn't returned to the US since then. 9 years.

The VO looked unsure when I explained it to her. I told her that I was initially under OPT but then my company filed an H1b petition and it was granted. I never got the H1b visa stamped on my passport. She then asked if I truly had an H1b, why wasn't it stamped on my passport. I told her that I didn't get the chance to travel to get it stamped. Mind you, you don't need to have your visa stamped so long as you are "in status". Plus you have to travel outside the US to have it stamped. I just never bothered since I was still in status.

She then said she would keep my passport for further review.

I'm just happy that I didn't lie or misrepresent anything. I told my story as it happened and my conscience is clear.

Lesson learned... Pay attention to your current situation as it will definitely affect your future.

Hahahahaha. Comparing me with these corrupt politicians is totally out of proportion. I am not corrupt but had done some favor for some politicians yet didn't ask for money. That is why they are still looking for me and had called me severally which I didn't pick their calls because they disrespected me for not calling me when they arrived in that state and met a top man and signed a contract worth a lot of money. A friend of mine here on Nairaland knew everything. I also couldn't sleep for over two weeks because I was heartbroken.

Second, the only think I could say I did which to me is not even bribe was when a friend of mine helped me with my passport. gave him something in return to show appreciation and tutored his friend who was refused visa before.

Not everyone in Nigeria is corrupt.

Then sponsor yourself to school and beware of free help especially when it's online. You can equally gain admission into a Nig school or take the foreign online education route and still face your business.

07/08 years I remember oo. tough time it was for a lot of people. The housing crises and recession saw so many people lose their job and status. I was only lucky to have dodged it . I hope the AP will be alright and you are given so I say .

Congrats, God bless your new journey

Thank you so much. It was indeed a tough time. Imagine being 22, out of school with a good paying job and living the American dream. All of a sudden you are told that you're fired. No solid reason given apart from "headcount realignment". It was a confusing time. I wish I had just left for Nigeria immediately to avoid any immigration-related issues but you never think of these things when you are young. It is well.

Yes, I am a Nigerian but has travelled widely so I have seen all sorts. From your account, I thank God for your achievements so far, but it will pay you better to focus on your business and go for a part time degree program in Nigeria.

There is nothing wrong starting with holiday visit to your generous friend in US, to test the water for assurance.

My visa was delayed a couple of days back.
I am applying for a PhD program.
The VO said that all PhD program in the US are fully funded or have at least a GTA.
But mine doesn't. I explained and explained to her that mine has only a tuition waiver.
Then she gave me the Blue paper. Now am at crossroads as to whether to apply or not.
My classes start in 10 days time.
Please advice...........

Bro/Sis,
The VO was damn right, All PhD I have seen or known so far are fully funded with some kind of assistantship. So your story of tuition waiver is not convincing

My Advise
Take another GRE (if u have not written any before or you have a low score) and package another application now to another school or if u wish the same school and get all the benefits involved. My2cents
