If you want to be am instrumentalist go to a music school that good teachers who are real musicians.
majority of churches in nigeria promote mediocrity in music.
instrumentalist should be able to play atleast 3 musical instruments, should know his scales, sight read and play by ear.
be original not copy copy.
there is difference between music and noise.
i didn't go to a music school, no teachers, no church. I learnt how to play the piano by ear. all i did was watch video tutorials on fingering and scales, then basic chords cos those are the most important. then i did everything on my own. I'm a very fast learner. i play guitar on the keyboard, i do keydrums too. most of the piano prodigies and professionals you see didn't go to any music school. why go to a music school where they'll teach you how to and how not to do things. Don't get me wrong, there are rules but at the end of the day, fûck the rules.

it'll take you days or even hours to learn music production and YEARS to become good. you'll be making China phone ringtones as beats in your first 3 to 4 years lol. the bitter truth.
the money doesn't come Everytime, just know. be ready to face the disappointments.

Most of these instrumentalist play to impress the congregation
Afterall some of them get paid at the end of Sunday service..they no longer use their talent to serve God for free..everything na bizness these days

but pastors get paid na. For the very thing that they were told 'freely you received and freely you must give'.

thank God.....ave bin looking for a post like did
actually ah do play conga.....I feel conga normally act as back up for drums......only few encourage me......i try to learn new materials even for worship songs .my problem is ,people do see conga as a minor instrument ..even when mine had problem , it took my band coordinators months to fix it ,but when the drums had problem it took them just minutes to fix . i felt they didn't or don't or they r not really lovers of music as they claim. another thing is that they don't really have faith in me ..while outsiders see me as an upcoming star , they still see me as a learner...this life is bleeped up

If you check well, most of them that get paid are the ones still hustling and have no good job. Most of them stop after getting jobs.. Its not as if they don't know they should play for free, Some of them it's conditions. You'll hardly see a man or young guy who has a decent job and source of income ask to be paid for playing in the Church
Oh my G! May God bless ur mentality

Going 2 musical skul is nt necessay bro...the most prominent skill 4 playing instruments is by "hearing technique" once u have dat skill.."notin do u"
All u have 2 do is
-Get materials, tutorial Dvd(for litu cash..myt even b 4 free) rather than spending enormous cash in music skul.
-Download&watch videos of various professionals in ur selected instrument&carefully study hw they play,or u can even practise d way they play d basic, passing chords, grace notes, riffs, extra fills, scales, movements and their music style..maybe jazz, blues or neo soul music&so on
After learning their styles&hw they play, add creativitiy to ur own style of play, dat will make u unique(pianists especially)

-update ur song library constantly(both local& foreign songs)and carefully score them.

-&most importantly PRACTICE!!!..&it shld range 4rm couple of mins 2 few hrs everyday

-May sure u understand the musical theory of whatever you play on your instrument.(that can be learned in tutorial dvds)

-whenever u go 2 any outing&u hear a trilling performance on ur instrument..maybe played by anoda instrumentalist...u can record or memorize&go 2 rehearse it on ur instrument.

#Do all dis for just 3 month&u'll notice a massive improvement in ur style of play....
#Do dis 4 few years&u'll bcom a pro.

lastly...Don't try 2 impress pple cos u want pple 2 call u multi-intrumentalist&start learning various intruments
ur case will b..."jack of all trade, master of none"
choose just 1 intrument&put ur best into learning it&bcom a pro....##

NOTE..dis myt nt really apply 2 classical pple

Dont be cocky you learnt from somebody, the piano though the easiest instrument to learn is the most difficult to master.
Its funny that some one studies piano for 3 months ,plays in the choir for 6 months knows only how to play songs and progressions on the c and a major scale calls himself an instrumentalist and master.

lol, no i didn't, not really. i wanted to enroll in a Music school but their classes was a joke. 4 times a month, i spent 6 months practicing fingering skills and another 3 months learning to play songs on all keys. I'd have decided to use the transpose function like most church pianists do but nah. note that i practiced an average of 3 hours everyday, don't blame me, no work and was waiting for NYSC. I'll proudly say that 95% of my piano knowledge is self taught.
i believe that if i had that opportunity when i was say, 5 or 6, I'll be competing with people like Yanni and Ming Freeman now lol.
