Bros, the kind of country that cannot save an infant, who might bring the solution to all our problems, is the kind of country to saves no expense to keep a dead and useless old man alive, who has become our problem in this country.

This is one if the reasons we must lynch the politicians in this country. The resources that should have gone to relevant sectors like health, education, security etc are not getting there. Rather they corner our resources to buy #300m bullet proof cars for themselves. Nigerian senators earn between #14 m - #26m per month and we have watched them do this for many years.Whether APC or PDP they are all vampires. KANU is right. We are in a zoo.

The government is to blame for this for not providing enough beds and facilities in public hospitals, but how can they provide it when Nigerians pay abysmally low prices for public health services, untill the health sector is privatized and Nigerians or health insurance companies are made to pay the real cost of health services I don't see it getting better.

There is nothing wrong with the demand of N250k by the private hospital, they are businesses and have the right not to give services on credit
Privatise what? The PHCN u people privatise how is it now? Better or worse?

And you think the parents didnt try this before they took the baby to the hospital? Do you know how much damages have been done due to self-medication and quacks?

...quality education, security, health-care, job-creation should be the least any govt should guarantee...so much innefficiency to deal...restructure the country already let the basic issues be tackled at the local govt/ward level rather than far in abuja.
There is no where in the article to support your claim the parents administered antibiotics at home.

While the Government cannot escape its share of blame , I want to say that any child needing admission for ear infections is already in the advanced stage of the infection.

I say this for parents to take heed and learn. A reported case early enough would be a routine call to the clinic and ear drops and antibiotics administered from home. That isn't self-medication.

My sincere sympathy to the family. Meanwhile our president is currently receiving treatment in UK. I must not question God because his dealings are right. May the soul of this sinless baby haunt all those who have put us in this quagmire.

And of course everything's right with a young child dying due to lack of funds right? People like you are our biggest problem.
you are the main problem we have. It is not right for the boy to die for lack of fund neither is it right for the private hospital to use their money to treat the boy. How many patient do you think a private hospital can treat on credit with their own money when it is most likely the patient wont pay once they are well or if the boy eventually dies? so nigerians must stop blaming private hospitals for demanding for their money but rather make govt enact a law that will ensure insurance or some other people pay back money after emergency treatment. Once they tell you there is no space in LASUTH....na lie. It means the case is so critical that chances of survival is slim. Such cases are naturally expensive. If the private hospital accepts them and treat them without deposit, should the patient die, not only will you lose all the money you have spent they will even blame you for not doing enough. They will refuse to ppay forgeting the effort you made in treating a critically ill patient usually requires fund. How much credit can private hospitals accommodate in a month?

At presentation the girl was in all likelihood an emergency case. The hospital should have helped stabilize her. It does not cost N250k to drain an ear infection and provide antibiotics and fluids.
Your other submissions are on point.
so it is every emergency you can stabilise right? How? After stabilisation then what next? How do they transfer the patient? You must learn how to think beyond the story. If it is an ordinary ear infection you think LASUTH will tell them there was no bed? When they say there is no bed in general hospital in nigeria, most times it is because the case is so critical the chances of survival is slim so they just used the NO BED alibi to push them away. The baby probably developed MENINGITIS and must have been unconscious and probably convulsing by the time they were running around. In children, meningitis is a relatively common sequelae of ear infection. In such a case the baby would require critical care and in most cases, ventilator so it is not about draining ear infection. so if in the end the baby dies while stabilising in your language after the hospital has incurred thousands in cost and the parent refuses to pay and even abuse them, they should just count it as bad debt abi and repeat the cycle tommorrow? it doesnt work.

the hospital is a business whose aim is to make profit. If hospitals continue treating patients without payment, how will they buy drugs, buy fuel, pay suppliers, pay salaries or you think drugs, oxygen, and others are free. Will the hospital refuse to pay an oxygen supplier because the person on whom the oxygen was used didn't pay.......this might sound wicked and harsh but it's what has to be done.

The problem with always expecting private hospitals to receive payment after treatment is that they may never get their money back, hence the cases of hospitals detaining patients for being unable to pay up. Its sad, but lets not forget that they also operate in a country with no electricity, hence high diesel costs, no proper financing, hence bank loans at high rates or from morgaging personal property e.t.c.

Parents!!! Please when your family members have ear infections, insert a garlic clove halfway in the ear canal. It sucks up infections. Garlic is a great antibiotic!

Oh no ...poor baby..... embarassed
Buhari went for ear infection treatment in London because he value his life..... .at the expense of Nigeria.. cos he did not trust our health service and the hospital in Aso rock.

When he came back.... he could not even build a low cost public funded hospital for the citizens to say thank you.....because he did not value their lives...

Why cant they just build just one top of the range ...outstanding hospital in Nigeria ... where people from abroad can also come to receive medical care....it is not as if Nigeria does not have the money .....but they are ready to spend billions on election.

I personally have a distrust of Nigerian doctors generally. I have acquitances with horrible experiences at the top ones in Lagos - Reddington, St Nicolas e.t.c. Even Akpabio that built an ultra-modern hospital in Akwa-Ibom flew abroad for treatment just weeks after launching. Asides the equipment, you cannot trust nigerian doctors.

oga, what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong, whether it favors you or not.

After treatment how are you sure they will be able or willing to pay. Hospitals have learnt from past experience, we have all seen cases where patients flee from the hospital when recovered without payment, when patients families call thugs to beat hospital workers, there was even one here on Nairaland where LUTH demanded N800k after treatment, instead of the relatives to pay up they came to Nairaland to be ranting on why LUTH would charge such a sum. If hospitals keep getting owed, how will they buy fuel, buy drugs, buy equipment, pay suppliers, pay salaries.

they do that because they depend only on peoples taxes, but here in nigeria we made bastard money from oil oil from 1970 till today, most things here in nigeria is expected to be free, why do u think that there was free education back in the days of awolowo and nnamdi azikiwe?

1.Well, awo and azikiwe had to pay some fees.....(Azikiwe did a lot of odd jobs throughout his stay in university in the USA)

2.Free education worked when the number of kids in school was less than 10% (by 1960) and when universities had less than 90000 students (by 1979...and not everyone went to university then. Most of my uncles and aunts on both sides of my family went to polytechnics). Not now when we have millions of students(and as regards university...there aren't enough spaces ).

3.Oil was 26% of our revenue by 1970. It did not become our no 1 earner till the early 1980's.

You should show empathy is some situations, that is why I had to jump into your mention, however since hospital need to run as a going concern atleast we the humans there need to be caring,
I wouldn't lie seeing the picture of that little baby I was nearly down to tears but had to contain myself, just see the beautiful soul wasted due to parents ignorance coupled wth the greed in the system -hospital refusing to help unless you pay money,
Agreed some patients misuse the opportunity why not give this one benefit of doubt sir !!!

the hospital has been giving different people benefit of doubt and they all end up the same, the typical Nigerian does not like to repay debt. The hospital has learnt from past experience

May you be blessed.
Only in Nigeria will free health and education be a manifesto point of a politician seeking election. How realistic is this in a population of about 170m. Only primary health care and basic education can be free and functional. Fix the economy, privatise secondary and tertiary health-care and education and see them functional. NHIS is a scam as far as I'm concerned.
Truly, the baby died courtesy of a failed system. May God grant the bereaved the fortitude to bear the loss. May He bring good times for this country too. Aameen

private hospitals are already doing that daily but you wont hear about it here . In our small facility, we have a bad credit of at least 1.5million monthly despite making strong administrative moves to block too much credit so the hospital wont collapse. Take your time to go to hospitals once in a while and help pay off some patient bill. Dont leave it for doctors and hospital workers alone. And while we show empathy, we dont allow emotions to guide our actions. If i know the chances of survival of a patient is abysmally low, i will collect deposit because i am not GOD. While trying to do my best with medical science the patient can die and you wont get your money back. But if the chances of survival is high, i will still go ahead and do my best even if you may not pay but it has limit too. You also need to encourage nigerians to learn how to pay bills after services even if the patient dies....because that is why hospitals demand for deposit and it is killing all of us. But if the hospital knows for sure you will pay afterwards why wont they treat you even if you have no money?

What happened to saving a life first according to the Hippocratic oath that these Medics were trained to live by? What happened to resuscitating and stabilizing the patient first before proper treatment, and of course requesting for funds before the proper treatment. Even before demanding for funds there should have been some form of stabilization on the patient. I was involved in an accident some years back and i went to LASUTH at Ikeja , was told that there was no bed the same happened at another teaching Hospital, would you say that was because the chances of survival was slim? I took the same situation to Igbobi and before registration they worked on my injuries on the spot right there in the ambulance and today i am alive to tell the story. Truth be told, irrespective of the existing situations and conditions, this life savers have abandoned their Oath and are only thinking about money.

God help you for the kind of medicine you practice. In civilized countries which Nigeria is definitely not, you are criminally liable for negligence if you turn away a medical emergency. Here people do anything they like. Its termed EMERGENCY for a reason. You are not legally or ethically required to deliver John Hopkins standard of medicine to such a case, just to do the best you can with the resources available, what is special about meningitis that she could not be admitted on compassionate grounds while the parents ran around to raise the money ? The outcome we now witness of a dead child is a better one ?
Life is cheap and meaningless to Nigerians that is why you can make such a submission

And fyi ALL EMERGENCIES must be attended to and stabilized before referral unless the knowledge or resources are unavailable.
