what re u saying? even at d present cost, how many nigerians can afford paying? i just cant relate how u cld come up wit such as a solution
thats just it, it's the sad truth, quality healthcare is expensive.......someone pays N2M for an operation in the U.S but a Nigerian wants to use N30K for the same operation at the same quality, it can't happen. The only solution could have been subsidy, but trust me, Nigeria does not have the money to subsidize quality healthcare.

What happened to saving a life first according to the Hippocratic oath that these Medics were trained to live by? What happened to resuscitating and stabilizing the patient first before proper treatment, and of course requesting for funds before the proper treatment. Even before demanding for funds there should have been some form of stabilization on the patient. I was involved in an accident some years back and i went to LASUTH at Ikeja , was told that there was no bed the same happened at another teaching Hospital, would you say that was because the chances of survival was slim? I took the same situation to Igbobi and before registration they worked on my injuries on the spot right there in the ambulance and today i am alive to tell the story. Truth be told, irrespective of the existing situations and conditions, this life savers have abandoned their Oath and are only thinking about money.
You are still repeating the same thing. I should save life first with what ? with my hand? is it not money we will use to buy ventilator, oxygen, drugs and co or you think everything is typhoid and malaria that you can always treat with 2k. You dont know about hospitals.....most general hospital in Nigeria are so bad that they commonly reject....1) cases with low chances of survival 2) cases that can tie up their bed for a long time. Wether you believe it or not, it is the reality. so if they assumed wether rightly or wrongly your case is either they can refer you. That doesnt mean there wont be a time they WONT TRUELY LACK SPACE. so they may not have space truely.
Moreso, you talk about SAVING LIFE FIRST. That is assuming i can save all lives. What if in the process of saving the life, the patient dies after incurring thousands in cost and the patient refuses to pay WHICH IS THE TREND IN NIGERIA.I should ask the writer of the hippocratic oath to pay me back?

Oga I disagree to agree with you with your comments above,it's like you a medical practitioner.i am only pained and ruled by my emotions seeing the picture of that baby, Atleadt you too should feel something for the baby by seeing the picture now
yes, we all feel for the baby, but when u run a hospital, and u treat 50 patients on credit as a kind hearted person, but u are only able to get back your money from 5 of them (and u had to threaten them with police and juju before they paid), and it's the end of the month, u are owing workers 4 months salary, suppliers are on ur neck for their payment, the bank is threatening to take ur house and car because u haven't been servicing d loan u took to start the hospital........what do u expect that doctor to do. He can't keep making losses.

God help you for the kind of medicine you practice. In civilized countries which Nigeria is definitely not, you are criminally liable for negligence if you turn away a medical emergency. Here people do anything they like. Its termed EMERGENCY for a reason. You are not legally or ethically required to deliver John Hopkins standard of medicine to such a case, just to do the best you can with the resources available, what is special about meningitis that she could not be admitted on compassionate grounds while the parents ran around to raise the money ? The outcome we now witness of a dead child is a better one ?
Life is cheap and meaningless to Nigerians that is why you can make such a submission

And fyi ALL EMERGENCIES must be attended to and stabilized before referral unless the knowledge or resources are unavailable.
. in civilised country most patient in nigeria will be sued for fraud after treatment. which civilised country? i trained all over the world in different field of medicine and i can boldly tell you nigerian doctors are performing miracles. Do your best and you still come back to nairaland to shout baby died for lack of oxygen? How many such threads have they opened on nairaland. Keep expecting doctors to treat you on credit when most patient are fraudulently evading payment after treatment. What do you know about stabilisation? A patient that was unconscious and convulsing that may likely need ventilator and you say they should stabilise.. With what? NOTE...nobody can hold a doctor or hospital criminally negligent for not using his money to treat patient first. In civilised country, insurance pays so you can be held liable. And if the patient dont have insurance you can call ambulance easily and refer the patient at no cost to the doctor.

Look we are not saying in all cases, we all know that some cases would require some measures like you said, but for heaven sake according to the OP, the child had an infected ear which could be stabilised before requesting for funds , most of these hospitals do not even think towards that direction and it's really so sad.

Which money, do u think it N1Billion yearly to subsidize quality healthcare.

http://www.google.com.ng/url?q=http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/briefing-book/how-much-does-federal-government-spend-health-care&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwjI14-ArsDWAhWBLFAKHXJyBRwQFggLMAA&usg=AFQjCNHtSTLJ2euiLhIVdywsdId4kQNhBg

The U.S. Spends $41 billion yearly for healthcare subsidies, how much is Nigeria's annual budget.

Can u suggest any other nigeria can improve her healthcare?

Most of my uncles and aunts on both sides of my family went to polytechnics). Not now when we have millions of students(and as regards university...there aren't enough spaces ).

you can see the logic. Nigerians are poor but they want doctors in private hospitals to provide them rich man healthcare. If you dont provide it then what happened to Hippocratic oath is the next line. In america you spend about 40k dollars ( roughly 12million) for uncomplicated cs. In nigeria, they beg you to collect 100k and they wont still pay. So, how can i provide a 12million quality of care with 100k just with hippocratic oath. Kuku kill us

The government is to blame for this for not providing enough beds and facilities in public hospitals, but how can they provide it when Nigerians pay abysmally low prices for public health services, untill the health sector is privatized and Nigerians or health insurance companies are made to pay the real cost of health services I don't see it getting better.

There is nothing wrong with the demand of N250k by the private hospital, they are businesses and have the right not to give services on credit

And you truly think all you said make sense Abi?

Let me ask you, do exist in the space called Nigeria irbyou are simply typing from another country?

Of course, it's true our health sector is in a shadow of its self but then asking for a whooping sum of 250k as initial deposit to manage pain in a kid is simply outrageous and inhumane. If it had to do with ICU what then. ...

Baseline, our government is to blame.

How many ENT specialist can you find within a 5km range?

Of course it's business and the hospital should be able to make some profit but asking for a 250k as deposit is way too much. Argue that with your keyboard.

And for the management of pain, that was in a wider/generalization of the happening events with private hospitals. So, I yes! I do understand what exactly it is I was referring to.

I read all you wrote. The thing is that health care is not free neither is it cheap. Inasmuch as we want to save lives the hospital will fold if it keeps rendering services for free in the name of saving lives.

Nope no one's supposed to render free services either, everyone goes into business for profit but, in some medical cases you could stabilize a bit to at least draw that patient back from death, then demand for your money before further treatment but most of these hospitals would not even respond at all to you. In the Op's story a bit of stabilizing would have helped that child first and probably encourage the parents to run around for funds.

would u keep quiet, there is nothing wrong with the price, do u know the quality of d treatment there were to receive and d standard of d hospital, some hospitals will charge 1k, some will charge 50k, some will even charge more than 1M, go to the one u can afford

well. An average nigerian does not pay over 300k a month for a two bedroom flat in Nigeria like an average citizen of a developed country neither did a nigerian trained doctor incurred close to or more than 40million naira debt in student loan after graduation. Different country, different cost of services.

The problem is our stupid politicians who earn millions every month but fail to develop the economy.

you are funny. That should rather make healthcare more expensive in dollar terms in nigeria. You know why? We import practically everything we use in hospital with dollars including consumables. So if i need a CT SCAN, i wont buy it with naira, i will buy it with dollars and custom will still collect duties on it. ICU equipment are all imported. The only thing we wont buy with dollars is building and salaries. so i wonder how we can provide that quality care cheaper than the dollars

Are you in the profession or aspiring to be one?
You are a disaster.
What happens to life first before money. What happens to first aid?

Your type will watch a pregnant woman die with the baby in emergency or the OR. Do you really understand that Medicine and Nursing are a calling? Ppl with empathy and sympathy? Anyone in it for money is a disaster.

It's unfortunate you are very rude and uncultured lacking the qualities of a professional in a discus (that is if you are one)

You need to groom yourself in responding to ppl

you have to choose one. GOOD AND QUALITY HEALTHCARE- EXPENSIVE.
POOR HEALTHCARE- CHEAP. While i dont blame anybody that cant afford good healthcare, Nigerians should stop blaming doctors that demand for money to provide a semblance of good care saying we should keep treating everybody on compassionate grounds. Well said!
Our government is damn too corrupt for the common man to be saved. See how much was budgeted for the state house clinic alone, more than 10 teaching hospitals.

FMOH is messed up.
We need Nigerians to stand up to this cancerous happenings. I and to think that the NGO bill will be affecting those related to health is sickening.
