EVILFOREST:

My DEAR you can.
MEDICINE is not meant for the brilliant alone, rather for the HARDWORKING types.
When I was set to embark on my trip through the Medical College to study HUMAN MEDICINE/SURGERY, the first gift my dad offered me was a CHAIR.
A very nice and suitable one for that matter.
He said to me " this CHAIR will remind you that you are meant to sit down and study for a longer time than others"
As a scholar, i was an AVERAGE STUDENT, although I have been a smart and hardworking man.
I surrounded myself with intelligent chaps as well.
That became a morale booster.
Always surround yourself with MEDICAL STUDENTS that will want to graduate as soon as possible.
They always know how to source for MATERIALS.
Join CHRISTIAN GATHERINGS, for they know how to hoard materials from UNBELIEVERS.
Finally, Choose your ROOMMATES yourself.
Make sure 85 percent of them are studying Human Medicine and Surgery.
If you can do all these, that means I will attend your Graduation Party.
At graduation, I will also encourage you to enrol for the United States Licensing Medical Examination.
Could you believe that Some SENIOR PREFECTS as it where those days, were withdrawn from my medical college....??
They relied on past glories.
However, if you find my SUGGESTION too long, then know u can't study medicine because it's VOLUMINOUS.
He said it all. But what I will add, buy a book that deals with how study or how to read. Pastor Kumuyi wrote one. "Achievers are ordinary people with extraordinary dreams and plans.''

the fact that you're at home for 2 years should tell you you're not bright enough for it.

Don't just wait your parents money ( that is even if you get admission to study it sef)

Re: Can An Average Student Study Medicine And Surgery? by tuoyoojo(m): 9:02am On Nov 11, 2017
okay lemme give u my little story

I would say am an average student

I never took first position in class

after ss3, i did year three in "unibonk" ( meaning I Stayed at home for three years. the reason was simple, i wasn't studying smart

the biggest hurdle is getting into medical school

this was d secret

I got jamb syllabus and I used the syllabus to form a reading note

for example in chemistry, they could say neutralisation reaction. I would read it and write it down including the chemical reactions

after reading, when am watching TV or maybe doing the dishes and I remember I have forgotten what I read, i would leave what am doing and go n check it out. in so doing I didn't mix n easily forget stuff

for English, i took the dictionary and went u it all,any new word I didn't know I wrote it down n memorised it. bf learning more words I would ensure I could remember what I read previously

I spent about 12hours reading during week days from 8am to 2pm, slept from 2 to 4pm. watched TV n did chores till 6pm.started reading again 7pm till 12am or there about.

I revised what I did during the weekend. I rested on Sunday.no reading just chilling. I dedicated one day to courses, i was good at, and two days for the ones I struggled with

most esp I drew closer to God and asked for help while reading

when I got to medical school, it wasn't so tough because I have learnt to sit for long hours

medicine is not difficult at all, the stuff u have to read is much so u have to read it over n over again depending on ur assimilating capacity

some just reading it twice they r okay others have to go over it many times

medicine is not all about reading. know how to plan ur time. never allow ur work to pile up.Never ever.

know what time is best for u to read, is it morning or evening or late night. then utilise it effectively

attend tutorials by religious bodies whether Christains or moslems.those guys have d key

discuss with friends, teach people. they learn from it

have friends in medicine n beyond. go to parties, flex..... yes I said u must flex. learn to unwind

because in every class in medical, people brain dey knock because they think medicine is all about reading n studying n no fun

when u leave school and u see ur colleagues, u would not talk about all d big books u digested but rather the fun stuff u had

above all, bros na God finally

ask God to direct u as to where to read because mbok, u cannot cover everything thing, absolutely impossible.

Studied medicine and still practise as a physician 12 years down the line, i was just an average student in school. but you simply need consistency in your reading and avoid distractions. Try to socialize as well as it will help you to ease tension.Pray well too.

Medicine? That course is not meant for brilliant students. It is meant for serious students. In secondary school, i didnt read and i passed all my papers at distinction levels. In med school, i started having low scores till i started reading. Throughout my stay in med school i never had a resit till i became the association president. I was travelling from one medical school to another and even outside the country till i got my first and only resit in medical school. Join NCCMDS. They will help you a lot. Above all, even when you become a doctor after all the stress in the medical school, Buhari will still not allow you to treat his ear infection indirectly insulting you. Unless you run away, nigerians actually believe their doctors are not good. We are practically performing miracles with the resources we have. So if you are average and serious....you are a doctor already. Congratulations
CAUTION....UNLESS YOU ARE WELL CONNECTED AN AVERAGE STUDENT MAY NOT GAIN ADMISSION IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Do you need to be a genius to survive medical school ? No.
In medical school a few years ago, some friends of mine coined a saying "College of Medicine has no facilities for measuring intelligence, it only measures diligence"

Your best bet in medical school is to be focused, hardworking and strategic. Here are a few tips to help you out.

1. Read. Read. Read.
You must take personal responsibility for your education; in medical school, much of what you learn will not be taught.
Read for at least 6 hours daily outside test and exam periods and 10+ hours during exams. You wont die; your head wont explode. On the contrary, your knowledge will grow. When that happens and you begin to 'get' the logic of medicine, you will love yourself.

2. Make friends with other serious people in medical school they will guide you on study habits and keep you on the right path. Join a study group. It helps.

3. Make friends with non medical students. They will offer you a different view of the world and allow you keep balanced perspective and social life. The guys in engineering, law, architecture, psychology, accounting, sociology will become CEO's, HOD's and governors someday then you'll wish you had known them better. There is life after med school.

4. Attend lectures as much as you can. Attend all clinical events and postings. Clinical rounds, tutorials and practicals are more important than lectures, the knowledge you gain there will not be found in books.

5. Practice your faith in moderation or else you will become a zombie student with two burdens - school-work and religion.
While it may be true that the pass rate is slightly higher for religious medical students, they have been known to fail too; moreover it can rebound on you in other ways.

6. Keep zero or one girlfriend / boyfriend. If you have more than one love interest, it should be in the context of serial monogamy.
Philandering and heartbreak can will ruin your grades. For guys, if you are mature enough and that is a priority, begin to look for a wife while at university (400 -600level). The concentration of girls is far higher on campus than outside and it gets harder after school ( I can't speak for the ladies but they usually know how to 'arrange' themselves wink )

7. Ensure that you have a reliable source of upkeep. Be frugal with your money. You cannot excel if you are perpetually broke.

8. DO. NOT. JOIN. A. CULT. Your lecturers will in some cases make sure you fail if they get to know you are a cultist, moreover your life and career will be in danger from other lowlife cult members. You will be distracted from your primary goal. (I consider some religious groups to be similar to university secret cults. They only differ in their attitude towards violence)

Good luck.

Can an average student be admitted to study Medicine?
There is a reason why you are still at home.
It is called reality check.
Some people had dreams of being governors when they were in JS1. Then life happened...

Medicine is for average students. The reason is cos the human body has not changed. The same parts and organs is Wat has been sere since 2000yrs.
So u are not coming to invent anything new in the body.
Just to read to know d already known body.

Smart and intelligent folks study engineering or computer programming this is were u will carve a niche for itself. U can invent something new with ur brilliance.

Medicine kills ur innovative thinking.leave medicine for ladies let men come and create d future we plan it to be..
The world will respect you. Like Bill gates

medicine is for the hard working student, not for the intelligent. Granted, your IQ need to be high but passion garnished with hard work and perseverance is all you need. let me tell u a story of the best student in my class in med school; he was so good that that lecturers feared having any academic confrontation with him but you know what? he failed our final mbbs exam simply because he couldn't demonstrate how to examine for pedal edema correctly.

In Nigeria, average depends on your location. An average student in the south may be a brilliant student in the north.

I have seen people going to study medicine in the north from the south. I have seen people who go to Sudan to study medicine who ordinarily won't have been given admission to study biology education in Southern Nigeria.

Medicine is a competitive course. Apply where there are lesser competition.
are you saying universities in the north are substandard?
