Is there a website that lists all STEM programs for USA ? I've seen so many lists online but not sure of their accuracy.

TWoods:

If Twoods says anything now, the association of Nigerians-Must-Go-To-America-By-Force will come for my head. cheesy A word, or in this case, many words from the NY Times is enough for the wise.

As i have always maintained, too many are focused on short term gains - admission and an F1 visa. There is very little thought about the "what next". You won't go to school forever, you don't want to be on an F1 for life. You will need to get a job and move on to an H1B. I recall many Nigerians had to go back home in 2009/2010 because of the financial meltdown which meant a lot of financial service employers were not hiring at all. For those who found jobs, the H1B visa was 100% guaranteed because there were so few people applying compared to the limit (there was practically no lottery that period). What to expect in the next 1-2 years:

1. The OPT is going to be severely limited. More than likely the USCIS will come out with new rules to shorten the OPT period and reduce the number of folks who are eligible. Those outside of STEM programs are likely going to lose out big time.

2. The H1B isn't going anywhere. The government can make all the noise they want. However, the rules have changed. As the NYT has noted, you now have a higher bar to meet to convince the USCIS that you bring a specialized skill that no American can meet. Going to 1-building schools is a sure banker that you will find it very hard to meet that bar, at which point, i can only wish you good luck.

Not really. Because different universities have different nomenclatures for similar courses.

But, on the program websites, the school would state clearly if a course is STEM-designated by Homeland.

I need naira gents & ladies. If you are looking to pay tuition or flight, sevis or you need usd! Send me a message! Thanks
I have seen this post like three times in the past two days. my opinion goes thus. I believe there are various ways now one can send money directly to his Nigerian account regardless of your location. Why come here and be asking for naira when you can get it conveniently from wherever you are? It boils down to the saying "if it's too good to be true, it's a scam". You may be legit for all I know but the way you are advertising it is suspicious. Walsprings does the same transactions for people but you Don't see him advertising himself. It's just an opinion though and common sense. And does anyone need dollar to pay flight ticket? You can always do whatever transaction at the airport.

Remember the saying "anything that's worth doing is worth doing well ". I don't know about others but it's all part of the testimony, knowing u succeeded where others failed, knowing that God's favour singled u out above some people. In my case there were three people infront of me,a guy going for his masters in the US,a woman in her forties claiming she was going for a wedding and a family of five going for holidays. Everything checked out. They had travel experience to fill two passports, bank statements and they were really jovial with the VO,the student was grilled and even presented a bank statement. These three were denied and i wasn't. If I'm giving a testimony of God's favour without mentioning that he favored me above the people who went before me then what sort of testimony would that be?? I hope you understand. I speak for myself alone not others. BTW who's also going to ETSU for spring 2018?
Lol.... Classic Case of Hero Bias and Retrospective psychology; So you're so special that God decided to bless you first with an F-1 visa grin grin grin grin grin... Twoods come and see your protégés ooh grin grin

Dear Nairalanders, I have been a silent follower of this thread for some weeks now and this thread has been very helpful for me.
I had my Visa interview today in Lagos, I was the first person to be interviewed by a Lady (can't remember the window)
My transcript below:

VO: good morning
ME: Good morning
VO: Why are you going to the US
ME: I am going for my masters degree program in computer engineering at University of Louisianna at Lafayette.
VO: Why US, why not go to India
ME: the US is the birthplace for computer networks and is a global leader in research and development of network technologies and security protocols. Studying in the US will afford me global exposure as well as………..(She cut me short here)
VO: what is your highest academic qualification.
ME: I have a Bachelor’s degree B.Eng Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
VO: tell me about your program, study plan
ME: my program is 36 credit unit courses for 4 semesters, 9 credit per semester and I’ll be taking courses like principles of computer commnunications, data mining, telecoms systems, network integrity & security protocols (she cut me short again)
VO: What is your career plan
ME: I career goal is to be a technical consultant (apparently she heard contractor) in networking and security field.
VO: have you handled any contracts so far?
ME: Excuse me?? (I was wondering where contractor came in from)
VO: You said your career goal is to be a contractor.
ME: No, I said consultant not contractor, tehnical consultant in networking
VO: Oh okay. So who would be paying for your education
ME: I got graduate tuition fellowship from the school and my uncle will be paying my fees (she cut me short)
VO: Your I-20 doesn’t state you have any fellowships from the school, it only states your family funds
ME: Yes, that’s because I got the fellowship from the school after my I-20 was issued. I have the letter from the school showing this (about to stretch the letter when she asked the next question)
VO: When did you graduate from school and what I’ve you been doing since then,
ME: I graduated in 2012, after which I embarked on a one year mandatory NYSC program. Immediatel after this I joined Huawei technologies where I’ve been working till now as an IP/Datacommunications engineer.
VO: what do you do?
ME: I’m a network engineer, my responsibilities include network design and planning, implementation & deployment, troubleshooting any IP transport related issues.
VO: what will you be doing in the US after your program
ME: I will return to Nigeria to rejoin Huawei technologies
VO: Rejoin Huawei? Are you sure you will have a place in Hauwei?
ME: Yes I’m sure,
VO: Are you guaranteed this?
ME: Yes I already have study leave from work
VO: DO you have any proof of this? Any letter from your employers to back this up
ME: I don’t have this with me here.
VO: Types for a minute, then blue paper…………….

I intend to get a study leave letter from work before the end of this week, then refire again. Gurus in the house, Kindly scrutinize my transcript, all criticisms are welcomed. I need as much information as possible before going again.

Although it might not determine the outcome of an interview

But if you have any form of scholarship or waiver make sure its on the i20. Always work with the school to resend you the correct i20 at time of the interview

Sorry man for the denial, you just have to brace up.
You did very well in the interview but the problem I see here is the lack of correlation between your undergraduate course I.e computer science, working in a bank and going for masters in Maths and statistics.Masters in computer science or information technology would have made more sense with you working in the IT department. I wish you all the best as you refire.

The truth is not all firms will give leave of absence as some are not even happy you are leaving. My concern now is will the VO subscribe to the idea of one saying "It is customary of my firm to issue the study leave letter" once the employee submits a copy of his/her admission letter together with the approved VISA passport.

Thanks for your response. My course I feel is very much in line with my first degree and my profession. There is no computer or computer science without concepts from mathematics and statistics. Moreover, my concentration is Statistical Analytics Computing and Modelling but i-20 came as Maths and Stat.

Hello House

I am 23yrs, I graduated from a university in Ghana last year july, I started my NYSC last year october and ended this year Novermber.

I got a job with an oil servicing company immediately after my graduation, and luckly for me I got posted there too. After service, now am a permanent staff. i gained admission for masters, and my interview is on the 5th of next month

my problem now is when asked about when i graduate, which is last year, i guess they already know about the one year compulsory NYSC, do I tell them i was working and serving at the same time, cos at the office then I was a one year contract which covered my NYSC, but as a full staff.

will my little work experience pose as a threat to me...please i need advice..

Hi House, I had my interview last week and my visa was granted.
I had chosen Abuja when i was filling my form i chose but when i tried booking for appointment earliest Abuja date was 13th december so i went back and put Lagos and got Nov 22nd, i actually got earlier date in lagos but i chose 22nd to enable my sevis payment to be confirmed. At this point i already submited my form and printed my confirmation and even in the appointment i chose Abuja Dhl office as my pick up point.

So I went to Lagos on 21st and on the 22nd morning i headed to the embassy for my 7.30 appointment.

When it got to my turn to scan my passport, they couldnt read my info, eventually she saw where the posted Abuja on my passport and asked why i had Abuja and im interviewing in Lagos i explained that i couldnt get an earlier date in Abuja. she said that my form was sent to Abuja and that i should go and wait at the back till its sorted, i waited for long then i heard them call my name over the mic and i went back to her.

Eventually it got to my turn, The young looking guy in window 6 was my VO
VO: Good morning
ME: Hello, Good morning
VO: may i have your passport
(i passed him my passport)
VO: have you been to the U.S before?
Me: Yes sir
VO: Okay, let me have your I-20 and sevis fee
(i passed him the two)
VO: what are you going to the US for
me: I'm going for my masters in law
VO: Tell me about your school
ME: I'm going to the University of Arizona, its in Tucson..(i really wasnt sure how to answer this cos i was prepared to talk about my course not my school so i was glad he stopped me)
VO (interrupts me) what is your highest qualification
ME: I have an LLB in law
VO: which school and is that your highest qualification?
ME: from********I also have a BL from Lagos law school

Honestly, if you believe in God, and thinks he sits down somewhere and does Tum-bum Tum-bum analysis on who gets a visa and who gets rejected, then your height of delusion is through the roof. grin grin grin

I guess the number of denial with good response today alone justifies the testimony(transcript) of Cassy14 when she rightly stated the number of denial before hers showing her gratitude to God.

I dont know if God seats in heaven & carries out visa lotteries on who to grant visa like you jokingly or mockingly said, but am certain it takes Gods favour to secure one. Eccl 9:11 the race is not to the swift nor the battle is to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding nor yet favour to men of skills.

That you sleep & rise, got ur visa while others did not or you got a job and others were not as lucky as u were is not because you are better, but because a higher authority chose to set you apart. You may call it luck but I call it favour.

So if you have forgotten the place of God in one's life by reason of long stay in the USA, I suggest u return to Nigeria and learn or relearn what Gods favour truelly is. smiley smiley
