Hello People. I got denied today by the guy in Window 6,really felt bad because I couldn't pinpoint what really went wrong because I felt I was lecturing (I really prepared and prayed well too) the guy all the minutes in his front and he kept on nodding like an agama lizard as we were both smiling.

I'm going to Tamuk for masters in Electrical and electronics engineering, been working in a power engineering firm in Lagos. I got home and read my denial under section 214(b)( Bottom line, I'm not able to show proof I'm coming back after my studies) so I suspected where the problem came.

VO- so where do you work and your responsibilities.
Me- Told him where I work and all what i wrote on my DS-160.
The next question was
VO- Are you on a study leave.
Me- Yes. The management of organization are fully aware of my desire to pursue a masters degree as it would help me to attain the post of the head of operations in my dept when i come back and I have my study leave here.
VO- oh Good. Is your study leave with pay or without pay.
Me- My study leave is without pay as my dad will be responsible for my study throughout my programme.

Few questions after that and he was typing for like a minute and I was thinking I killed it and I should get an approval.

Then he issued me a blue paper. Asked him what went wrong, he said 'I'm really sorry, I don't coach bla bla' and I left.

So please any advise? I'm reapplying for sure but I can't get a study leave with pay at my organization and how else can I change my situation to stand a chance of getting a positive outcome.

Thanks. Please I need kind and frank response.

You shot yourself in the foot. You claimed you were on study leave. But it wasn’t obvious that this was the case. Did you provide a genuine letter attesting to that? A letter that expressly states what you are going for, how long you’re expected to be away and a clear indication that your job will be available when you return. It should also state if you are going to be paid or not during your absence. This letter should be on your company letterhead and signed by a management official.

Also, if truly this is to enable you move up in your company, why are they not paying for it? It’s strange.

The problem is that when you reapply, you can’t deviate from this again. See the question in bold that the VO asked, you didn’t answer it at all or probably did not understand it.

I had my letter with me. The V.O didn't ask for it and I didn't want to be forward (Well, I hear people say here 'don't give out documents when you are not asked' ) guess that's wrong then. Plus I answered the question that my leave was without pay.

What's the way forward ?

I was interviewed by a young guy at window 9, every one before me was denied.

And my transcript goes thus:
Me:Good morning
Vo: Good morning, how are you
Me: Fine and you?
Vo: What course are you going to the us to study
Me: I am going to study and Obtain a Masters of Science degree at the Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville
Vo: Why this course
Me: I had always wanted to be a consulting analytical Chemist. There is the shortage of Chemist in Nigeria, hence the reason for fake drugs and chemicals everywhere. There is no strict measures for testing these chemicals. I said some other things I can’t remember
Vo: What does a consulting analytical chemist do
Me: An analytical chemist consults for agencies like Nafdac and SON. For example if you need to get Nafdac number for a Pure water company, the sample is sent to the consulting chemist to test and the result is sent back to them to see if it meets the standard requirements.
Vo: What are the elements you test for in water (this question threw me off balance as I wasn’t expecting it)
Me: Water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen. I’ll test if there are heavy metals or other impurities like carbon in the sample. Didn’t even remember to talk about the PH and other stuffs.
Vo: Did you apply to any other school?
Me: Yes, Michigan Technological University and University of South Florida
Vo: Did you write any test
Me: Yes I wrote Gre and Toefl
Vo: What did you score
Me: Gre 294 Toefl 97
Vo: Who is sponsoring you
Me: I’ll be sponsoring myself
Vo: Looks at me like ??
Me: I got full funding, just need some token which I can afford
Vo: Checks my i20 very well and continues typing. Are you married?
Me: Yes
Vo: Do you have Kids?
Me: Yes I have a boy and a girl. Told him their ages
Vo: You mean you have a boy and a girl and confirms their ages
Me: Yes with affirmation
Vo: Have you travelled out before
Me: No I haven’t got any reason to travel out of the country
Immediately he dropped my passport in the tray honestly I didn’t hear anything again my heart leaped. He passed the white paper and said somethings .........
I went out and started crying cos it could have just been God.
No document was asked. My most dreaded question was not asked.
Meanwhile i had my Bsc Chemistry 11 years ago.
I have been working in the financial industry. No work experience in chemistry. But I just wanted to go back to school to pursue my dream.

You are welcome. Applying for What? You can apply for Visa within 90days of your school start date. Your main concern now is how to apply to schools and get admission. You need to be more explicit on exactly what you need help with. If you plan to resume in Fall 2018, your grace period to apply to school is fast elapsing. Have you applied to schools? Have your gotten Admission(s)? Lets start from here

Visa approved this morning by the white lady @ window 3.

This is how my transcript went.

VO: good morning and how are you?

Me: good morning, am fine thank you.

VO: Why do you want to go to the usa?

Me: for my master degree in Agricultural science with specialization in agribusiness economics @ tamuc.

VO: Why this university?

Me: I chose TAMUC firstly, because I wanted a university that will give me maximum exposure to the application of advance technology in agriculture, as well as a faculty member whose research interest is in line with my current work experience.

I found the research work of Proff A, who currently carries out research on the application of statistical method on economic data and the use of linear programing model and quantitative technique for forecasting and decision marking using simulation.

I reached out to him and hopefully, I will be working with him come January.

Also, during the period of application, I was in contact with some of the alumni of the university and also with the director school of agricultural science, Dr M, where I got to know that TAMUC offers a Corporative and an Experiential Educational programme, which integrate classroom experience into real life world; connecting student with expert and professional in their field of study. This I believe will give me the hands on experience required to be more competitive as an Agronomist when I return home.

VO: what is Agricultural business economics.

Me: Agribusiness economics is a combination of two programmes. Agricultural economics and agricultural business. Agricultural economics is an applied field of economics that is primarily concerned with the application of economic principle for the optimization of production and distribution of food and fibre while Agribusiness is the business of agriculture. Said somths that I can't remember again.

VO: how did apply to this university.

Me: Applied through the university website, sent my transcript, wrote the GRE, got a waiver for the TOEFL.

VO: What's you GRE score

Me: 297

VO: how many universities did you apply to.

Me: 3, named them.

VO: what's your highest degree?

Me: B. Agriculture

Vo: what specialization?

Me: Agricultural extension and economics.

VO: what university and what year did you graduate?

Me: landmark university, July 17 2015.

VO: what have you been doing after graduation?

Me: I immediately joined my dad's Agribusiness company before going for my NYSC after which I returned back.

VO: what would this degree do for you?

Me: it will equip me with managerial competence, research and analytical skills as well as good business ethics to assume the position of an agricultural economist in my dads company.

VO: what does your dad company do?

Me: its an agribusiness company involve in production processing and distribution of agricultural product; we also provide independent technical service to our client.

VO: how many staff does your dad have?

Me: 25 full staff, and many more contract staff esp. during production. We also have other farms we partner with.

VO: what is you position and responsibilities?

Me: I work as an agricultural data analyst, and I work in a team whose responsibilities are to create competitive advantage as well as maximize profit for the company. We research and analyse the various aspect that influence the agricultural industry, taking cognizant of govt policies and how dey affect our business. ( At this point I knew I sparked somth in her which lead to the next bloody question)

VO: Explain what you mean by govt policy and give example to buttress your point?

Me: No vex, at this point I begin sweat under my 1$million suit. But by Gods grace, I was able to tell her somth about the land tenure system in Nigeria and how during my research I found out that most farmers cultivate less than 2 ha each year because the process of getting land from govt is so cumbersome.

Then my head recollected that I did a project for someone on ATA (Agriculture Transformation Agenda) during Jonathan administration. Knowing that the New minister of agriculture who studied French has scattered what Dr Adeshino did during his time as minister of Agriculture. I started to download everything I knew.

VO: Do you have any relatives in the US of A?

Me: No

VO: Whose your sponsor?

Me: Dad and my elder brother.

VO: what does you bro do?

Me: Real Estate financing and he deals on cars.

Types for about 30s, then I head congra.....and I became deaf at this point. I sha noticed she brought out a white paper, cycled somth and passed it to me. Pls, can anybody tell me what she said.

Honestly, it can only be God. I prayed, fasted and also worked hard. Gods name be praised alone.

Hello. I am also going to Texas A and M commerce. Congratulations on getting the Visa. We should hook up

Hi everyone,

Please i am a silent follower and I have learnt a lot with the fam., but wants to know if 3.7/5.0 Msc GPA can help me secure PhD admission in U.S.
Hoping to write GRE and Toefl later.

Your GPA is not competitive enough but It is going to secure you a PhD admission. To enter a top tier school with this GPA, you need to work on other areas of your profile like scoring very high in the TOEFL and GRE (165/170 Q & V). In addition, try and publish in a peer review journal. Try and publish your BSc and MSc thesis in a peer review journal. Those are the other ways to improve your profile and get admitted into top tier schools.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend to my initial inquiry. I have been placed on AP since Dec 22 and my start date is Jan 8. Is there anything I can do on my part to salvage this situation? It's been the longest week of my life. I'm already spent psychologically.
The research assistanship came in after my I-20 was issued and my guess is the VO wasn't convinced it was genuine. It's the holidays season and school won't resume until January 2 and I feel until then, the VO won't be able to clear her doubt.
What do you advise I do? I'm in a race against time.
I really look forward to your insight on this and I would really appreciate your advice on the right step to take to salvage this. It's all I have ever wanted; to learn, become an expert and hone my skill on the best platform available which NCAT university is offering me.

Unfortunately, other than wait, there is nothing, absolutely nothing you can do once your application is in AP. You just have to hope for the best.

Sorry bro. This is the reason the embassy encourages everyone to apply well in advance of intended travel.
