Only village idiots on naira land will call this a good development. Banning rice importation will give people less choice and will increase the price of rice since local producers wont have any competition.

you wan ban rice importation when our local farmers never get enough rice to meet demand, which will only lead to one thing, making rice more expensive and unaffordable for people like me. When dis man go get sense?
see this one. Rice wey farmers they find people to buy? If u can't afford rice from farmers, farm it yourself. Our ec0n0my needs to be diversified apart fr0m agric and fuel. It must be d0ne by force cos Nigerians in general are lazy and want quick cash. We ought to ban importati0n of things we can produce here. You guys want a developed and working country yet u expect the country to keep depending on others for survival things it can produce. I won't criticize Buhari for this even if i don't like him.

Some people will still hate Buhari even after this good gesture, tell them to go into farming now, they will be forming.
Sit down there while local rice farmers are getting richer by the day though you are free to come on nairaland and blame the president for your life miseries as usual.

Jonathan reduced food importation through YOUWIN.

Why haven't the idiot called Buhari expand the program to accommodate 20,000 graduates with 2000-4000 focusing on Rice production.

#200b alone would have seen 20,000 graduates having #10m each transform the economy of Nigeria.

Why did Buhari not give thousands of graduates YOUWIN empowerment loan to help them reduce price of food through local production & processing.

If your useless Buhari had sense, he would spent 200billion naira last year to empower 20,000 graduates through YOUWIN and ensure that 2000 are rice agricultural based.

Steps to reduce importation

1) Set up silos in every local government.

2) Through YOUWIN, ensure that in every local government, rice is cultivated

3) After harvest, process and store all the rice in the silos.

4) Based on the quantity produced, increase tariff on imported rice if the quantity produced is not 120% of the demand.

5) if the quantity produced is 120% of the usual demand, ban importation completely and make rice available at every LGA for sale.

If your useless Buhari is intelligent, he will budget #200b to support 20,000 graduates through YOUWIN and ensure that 2000 are rice producers in all LGA of the federation.

The mumu called Buhari would have strengthen YOUWIN with #200b targeted at 20,000 graduates @ #10m per graduate centered on all kinds of businesses with 2000 being rice farmers scattered all over Nigeria LGAs

Afonjas claiming Akwa Ibom

Till this hour, you have never championed the establishment of Ibaka seaport as made known to your cursed brother OBJ when Tincan and Ibaka were proposed to him in 1977.

I wonder why a so called Akwa Ibom person will never champion such project

At last, I remember that Afonjas pretend to be SS in order to scuttle the establishment of Ibaka seaport.

I don't think is right to ban importation rice for now, let's have excess of it first at lower price, people will decide the one to buy. Avoid what happened last year, we learn from our mistakes.

Nonsense.. You are eating waste product in the name of local rice.
1: The cost is very high.. Imagine buying common bag of rice for 20,000 naira.
2: The quality is not there... Complete waste product.
3: If all go for the local rice, the production can never meet half of the demand.
Re: Nigeria To Ban Rice Importation This Year – Buhari by princejenks(m): 4:55pm On Jan 01, 2018
Yeah local production of rice has increased but has it risen to a point where it has crashed the price of rice significantly all over the country? I do hear its cheap in some parts of the country but I'm yet to observe same where I reside cos the diffference in price between a module of local and foreign rice is just 50 bucks, that's not very significant, besides, banning won't stop smuggling of foreign rice which still commands heavy presence in the market cos nigerians prefer variety

You seem quite confused about the facts......

Lets use petrol as an example, we produce our own fuel but the fuel we produce cannot meet local demand hence the need to import. And thats why we have it at a high price as well as contend with scarcity from time to time.

Rice is even much worse. The demand for rice is so high, as at 2001 the estimated demand for rice daily in the state of Lagos alone is 800,000 bags of rice daily (No, I didnt mean monthly, I meant daily). And that is just one state out of the 36 states of the federation.

Calculate that figure in a year and name the local brand that can meet that high demand then you will understand how stupid this idea is that Buhari is playing with.

If he goes ahead with this plan, then get ready to buy a bag of rice for #50,000. Me don already dey stockpile bags of rice in advance, this petrol scarcity don teach me sense...... undecided

I must buy Lexus ES350 this year............. angry
