You might want to edit that your long post, this is a public forum and VO do visit here. Your concerns and worries just boil down to the fact that you did not plan well, you put the cart before the horse. With your UK degree you should have gotten one form of assistanship/funding if you had done proper research. At this point there is nothing you can really do, if you cant get a relatives soa..then you might just go ahead with using his own and hope for the best. However you really believe he will pay tuition of 10k for at least 3 semester each? Do you ever consider if you guys breakup? what of living expenses? Just like you said, putting your hopes on anyone that is not parent or immediate blood is risky. Nothing is certain in life. You need to start emailing your graduate coordinator asking specifically for funding opportunities if not now but at least in second semester, also try to connect African students in your school using linkedin to ask for likelihood of on campus jobs. Getting a Visa should be your first worry right now. Anyways consider editing that post.

I have edited the post. Yeah I honestly didnt do a lot of planning. I was very sure i was going back to the UK in September. I had the admission and all but plans didn t work.
Is there no way I can still get a form of assistantship or something? Even when I get there? Or do i have to wait till fall? I have a first class honours. As for living expenses, he said he would give me 500 dollars a Month since i would be living with his friend(who he would sort out bills with). I was thinking of staying with a friend before but she recently moved Ohio. And do I stick with uncle or guardian?

You should be asking your grad cord all these assiatanship questions, schools are different. There are cases where a student will get to school and he/she is lucky to get assistanship without waiting till next semester while there are cases where if you get to school 'a year' before your resumption date and move from one dept to the other like an Israelite you wont see the light at the end of the tunnel, infact most schools don't always have much funding in Spring semester because less students are graduating in Fall. You should see alot of Nigerians in your school that you can ask specific questions on Linkedin, start adding them to your network. But if I were you, getting a visa is what I will worry about right now and not funding

I stated earlier about the man that booked emergency interview for me, and requesting for 200k, even when he neva told me I would be payin a dime before then..people advised me to change d password and I did d same.. I was already preparing for my interview (as I would be travelling from a long distance), just logged into my profile prior the interview, to my surprise I didn't see any interview date plus I saw a different name and another country, Nigeria no more showing as country applied from. I emailed the cc and dey told me d interview was cancelled. The isssue is can I still use it by bookin another day, but I have to defer now since sch as resumed.plus what could have gone wrong with the account an cancellation..

Because they feel its cheaper, most also feel its an escape route from Nigeria. I am not against people without Bsc going to community colleges, but people with Bsc already are looking for escape route and greener pasture. Whether the grass is green on the other side or not is what they might find out the hard way

This is true. Yea, I know it's an escape route for many of them. But coming here to use it to start noise or trying to prove the degree worth anything is what's annoying. An associate degree on it's own is nothing in labor market except for ADN. It's only good for transfer for a better degree when people are broke.

Pearl93, Honestly even if you get your visa now, this advice up there is a very good one. You can still defer to source for funding and plan well interms of funds.Trust me you dont want to come to the US and be stranded because of money. You could also apply to some better schools than tamuc within this period to get funding with admision. However if your source of funds wont mess up when you get to the US, then its fine. Pardon my doubting thomas spirit, maybe if you guys were married I would have been more convinced that he is going to foot the whole bills.I know of blood brothers just like your case, the younger one got to US with the hope and agreement that the elder one will pay his bills, story started when time to pay came. The decision is yours to make.

I will add my voice to this. Just defer your admission to Fall to sort out the funding situation. At this moment, you don't have any notable source of income and you are at the mercy of your "boyfriend", whom you can't even mention at the embassy. Being stranded here without and out of status is not funny. Being a lady even makes you more vulnerable. This boyfriend is going to pay just doesn't sound right to me.

Please, defer your current admission and then search and apply to other schools towards Fall semester. Explore funding options in TAMUC and the other schools you will apply to. The US will still be there in August, you will only miss a semester which is Max of 4 months.

Hello @ all,
Got to the Newark international airport around 10pm and took their AirTran to rail station where I took a train from the train station to Newark penn Station..
Upon getting down at the penn station, I realized that I didn't pick up my hand luggage which cosists of all my documents including International passport..

Please, what's the best option for me?

I have tried contacting the NJ train station but they couldn't find it..

Thanks

Did you forget this on the AirTran? In that case, the airline is unlikely to be able to help since the bag is no longer in their possession. Contact the Newark airport to report this immediately. If you forgot it on the train to Penn station and they cannot find the bag, then you're out of luck. If all else fails, contact the police. Without those documents, you may not be able to register in school. How did this happen? shocked

I have a little problem.

You actually have a big problem.

Pearl93:

My first degree is from the UK and i was sponsored by my parents. But due to the current situation in Nigeria, they can't afford to sponsor my Masters. My boyfriend works with a FTSE 100 company in the U.S and earns about 12k dollars a month. He works offshore. He encouraged me to apply to the U.S instead of the U.K and he promised to foot all bills. So far he has kept his side of the deal by paying for GRE, DHL, application fees, sevis and all. It was also his bank statement that I used in getting my I20.

Is this $12K AFTER or BEFORE taxes? If it is after taxes then this is good. If it is before taxes then at most, he is getting around $7K after taxes (after deducting state/federal tax, 401K and benefits contributions). That is not a lot to pay for his own upkeep and then pay your fees. It looks like a lot of money to you, but considering cost of living here, it is not a whole lot.

Pearl93:

My problem now is he said I must not mention at the interview that he is my boyfriend. He said I should say guardian or uncle. Because the fastest way to get denied is to say I have a boyfriend who is an American citizen. But i don't know how feasible that lie is. I am 23 and he is 35. How can he be my guardian? He has sent his bank statements and there is a closing balance of almost 50k dollars. So it surely covers my tuition and cost of living.

He is not lying. He is right. Once you tell the VO that he is footing your bills and he is also your fiancé, you may as well kiss an F1 visa goodbye. He becomes a very strong tie to the US that you must overcome with a stronger tie to Nigeria.

Pearl93:

He said I should tell the consulate that he is my uncle and my parents sponsored him in school when things were going well. And now he is repaying back the gesture.

Do you guys think that would fly? I am really confused. I picked relative in my DS160 application. I don't want problems getting the Visa. If the VO asks why my parents are not sponsoring me this time since they paid so much for my first degree in London.

This lie won't fly. The VOs by now already know that every Nigerian has an "uncle" or "aunt" somewhere. This is one of the problems with our constant lying... it becomes hard to believe anything we say, even if it were true. You both have different surnames. When you both get married and you want to get a green card, this will come back to bite you in the back. How can you now be marrying your "uncle"? You should think beyond the now. Every lie you tell now has a consequence later... it is the law of life, not your village people.

Pearl93:

Also, do you know any way i can apply for a graduate assistant? I don't want to put all my hopes on my boyfriend . You know how these things can turn out. Right now I have nothing but him. And it scares me that if anything goes wrong, I would be stranded. He can be a bit impatient and has a bad temper. And honestly, I am not very patient myself. Even if it's an accommodation scholarship. He wants me to live with his friend who is married. Because im not studying in the same state he lives. And I honestly don't want to do that. *sigh*

This isn't Nigeria... these things require advanced planning. All graduate assistantships available would have been given to students who started in the fall, who applied as far back as last spring.

You won't. At least not until next fall... Nigeria is the only place I know where serious issues are left to "hope" and "prayer". In other countries, people set plans/work goals and work towards them.

I already informed the school and was asked if I have a copy of my passport and I said yes.. The next thing she said was ' I should show up that someone will help me with the process'

Which is contacting the police to get report from them and the school will print my I94 which will will show that I got to the states legimately...

Is it gonna work that way?

Yep. You should be ok. They can use a copy of your passport to register you. Luckily, your I94 is now electronic so that can be downloaded online using your passport number (which really is the key). Contact the police, they will issue you a police report. Keep this as you will need it when you apply for another F1 visa. The US will likely cancel your previous visa but you will remain in status as long as you remain a fulltime student. Once you are now settled, you can contact the Nigerian consulate nearest to you and obtain a new passport. You will need to reapply for an F1 visa if you leave the US, but this is not compulsory... if you stay in the US, you'll be fine.

Yes. You will need to obtain work authorization, through the OPT or H1B visa. Your school will guide you through the OPT process. Your employer will file for an H1B on your behalf.

Think about it this way... the MIS is basically a generic "everyone can get it" degree. As a foreigner, it will cost a company thousands of dollars to get you permanent work authorization in the US. Why take the risk and associated costs to keep you when they can find another US citizen with an MIS from another paper mill?

Take the time to research your field, find out what your job prospects are... who is likely to hire you, how much they are willing to pay you, what the competition is like etc. No one can do this for you.
