In France engineering is taught in Frence English
In China engineering is taught in Chinese not English
In Spain engineering is taught in Spanish not English
In Hungary engineering is taught in Hungarian not English
In Italy engineering is taught in Italian not English
In Germany engineering is taught in German not English

Given these examples, why can't engineering in taught in Yoruba on YORUBALAND?

Those countries are mostly ethnically homogeneous, and have their languages as the national language. Nigeria is a multi-ethnic unitary state with an official language which happens to be a colonial one.
In any case, that isn't even the important thing. No one has stopped you developing a Yoruba curriculum. If they were teaching Engineering in Yoruba in LASU, no one who doesn't speak or write Yoruba would bother applying. That's a different thing from going to study a professional course with English as the language of instruction, then having to waste your time with irrelevant courses that adds nothing to your profession. It is understandable in basic education (primary and secondary), but not educating a bunch of adults that came to the university to train themselves as professionals.

Tetiary institutions in Lagos

This is vague. Does the law mean all tetiary institutions in Lagos which includes Yabatech and UNILAG and other private institutions or Lagos state owned ones only?

Can this law be held in federal secondary schools like Kings and Queens college?

You may wish to read the news item again. The answer to your question is clearly stated there.

u really don't get it rite, is it the student that would go to school from 8 to 6 no time to rest when they come back from school that are doing 16 courses and u expect them to pass all of them that would be happy with this development. Did u think of the childrens mental health before undergoing such. Maybe u don't know they said they it already in effect, but there are students who really don't like all this language course that are already done with tertiary education, when they become leaders maybe then u would understand that all form of culture are long dead..

Do u know , Louis Vuitton, givenchy, zanoti, tom ford, that is what is on their mind not all those old school dressing, modernization has taken over and it is here to stay. This rubbish wont last long.
you are not making any sense.
It says yoruba is now mandotary for "admission" in to Lagos schools.

It means you need to pass Yoruba in your waec or what ever exam you wanna do to get into Lagos school, just like you need English to get into the federal schools in Nigeria.

If you are not complaining about needing french to get admitted in France, why are you crying about needing Yoruba to get into Yoruba schools?

English is federal language, the law didn't affect federal schools. Go to federal school and leave Yoruba school for Yorubas if you cannot cope with our language.

I think this law is not well thought out. What of foreign students? What of children of soldiers or police etc that are transferred to Lagos State and will be denied admission because of yoruba language.

If Lagos wants to be a mega world class city, one of the crucial things to do is to simplify communication among its residents and not foreclose options.

This is a minus to Lagos who usually is a pacesetter.

None. What is your point exactly? Everyone in your list has a government that is elected to make laws that they feel is best for their people.

You do that in basic education, from primary to secondary level at the formative years of citizens. Not in universities for adults. Our education system is unfocused and meandering enough as it is where a 3-year Engineering program in the UK and other European countries takes 5 solid years minimum in Nigeria due to a host of irrelevant 1st and 2nd year courses. Now such a student also has to concern himself doing language courses in GS. How is that relevant to his tertiary education?

this go beyond education my guy, we are too fast to compare our disorganised governmental system to a stable government of other countries

goto East, even in the bank the igbos ain't ashamed to speak Igbo language but Yoruba here, in a corporate organization, you will hardly know the employee are yorubas

how do we restore our language value if not through schools? the governor unanimously with the lawmakers had passed the law and there is ntn anyone can do to reverse that, so this debate has no meaning to me

I knew this was going to happen one day. Because no matter how educated a Yoruba person is they find it very difficult to speak English or pronounce another tribe's name. I won't be surprised very soon primary school teachers will be teaching all subjects with Yoruba and when they eventually travel to another place for youth service You See them finding it very difficult to communicate with good English. I'm Oduduwa is disappointed with this law where ever he is grin
I can see how delude you are. English is a foreign language and It's killing our local lang6and culture and a law has been pass to awake the dead language but you are here saying rubbish about a an educated Yoruba man can speak or pronounce good English have you ever ask yourself why did AMERICA have their own version of English instead of British that colonized them.
It's high time we promote ourselves and our own things in our own way.if you are in any European country you will be forced to go to school to learn their local dialect before you can be consider in any things.
The first step of restructuring should be language colonization. Every region should use their local officials language to communicate in their region and I believe with this we are ready for separation or restructure.

Is Lagos and by extension, YORUBALAND, not ethnically homogeneous enough for you? By enacting this law, Is the Lagos state government doing anything illegal under the Nigerian constitution?

All candidates seeking admission into all tertiary institutions in Lagos State must henceforth possess credit in Yoruba Language, the state Yoruba Language Preservation and Preservation Law has said.

The law, which became effective last Thursday, would now make compulsory for all primary and secondary schools – private or public – in the state to include teaching of Yoruba Language as a core subject at all levels.

The state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, had formally signed a bill into law “to provide for the preservation and promotion of the use of Yoruba Language and for connected purposes,” thereby making it the first state to enact law seeking to preserve and promote its indigenous language.

He signed the law alongside the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Olawale Oluwo, his Information and Strategy counterpart, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan and the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade, among others.

He equally signed six other bills into laws: the Amended Land Use Charge bill, School of Nursing bill, Cooperative College bill, Cancer Research Institute bill, Amended Customary Court bill and the State Electric Power Reform Law on the same day.

However, the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion law provides that all the laws in the state “will be translated into Yoruba Language. Moreso, all state-owned tertiary institutions are to incorporate the use of Yoruba Language in the General Studies (GNS) courses.

“The use of Yoruba language shall be an acceptable means of communication between individuals, establishment, corporate entities and government in the state if so desired by the concerned. It shall not be an offence for a person to speak Yoruba language by the state government,” the law reads in part.

Specifically, the law stated that any school in Lagos State that “fails to comply with the provisions of Section 2 commits an offence and is liable on first violation to issuance of warning and on subsequent violation be closed down and also pay a fine of N500,000.”

After the governor approved the legislation, Bamigbetan explained the socio-cultural value of the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law, 2018, which according to him, is the first of its kind in Nigeria.

With the new law, Bamigbetan said Yoruba language “has become mandatory for all candidates seeking admission into our tertiary institutions. Yoruba will now become a major requirement to engage in normal business communication in Lagos State.

“This is a clear and conscious commitment to the position which Lagos State prides Yoruba language as the cultural vehicle for us to be able to articulate our position and it also shows that Lagos has further recognised the importance of language as a vehicle for development.”

He said anyone seeking admission into the Lagos State University, Lagos State Polytechnic, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos State School of Nursing and Lagos State College of Health Technology, among others must have credit in Yoruba language.

What part of the constitution supports this Ambode law on compulsory Yoruba language?

Lawyers must move into action to quash this piece of ethnic bigotry.

Lagos is a cosmopolitan City not Yoruba City.

This bill is targeted at the Igbos.

Which other ethnic groups go to school in large numbers in Lagos more than the Igbos?

Igbos make una shine una eyes.

When Igbos generate taxes used by the state government to build thise schools...they didn't ask that you must be able to speak Yoruba.

I wonder why other states in SW have not come up with the same legislation.

How many Yorubas attend schools in other regions, if other regions had to create the same laws?

How will you implement this program?
Does that means an Ibo boy from Anambra State or Hausa boy from Kano State can not apply to higher institution that belongs to Lagos State?
Of course he can. All he needs to do is to pass Yoruba as a subject, during NECO or SSCE exams, and to do that, he must learn to speak the language. It is a bit like going to study in Germany or Russia. You would have to take a year or so, to master the language of instruction. cheesy

It is not foolishness. You can still study in 34 other States of the federation if you do not like Lagos State's laws.

What a backward and retrogressive law.
If you want to 'preserve the Yoruba language', why not restrict this only to Yoruba people? Why is this not optional?

This is hostile to others, and disregards the fact that we have a national language in English to eliminate issues such as this. Essentially, this law makes it legal to go to a meeting in the Civil service and have the entire meeting conducted in yoruba language, to the exclusion of any present non-yoruba speaker.

Heck, you can even no use this law to hold lectures in LASU in 100% Yoruba.

Imagine if every tribe copies this and you then need to have a credit in Igbo language to even apply to Imsu angry

Disgraceful that there are some people here supporting this shite.

If you don't like it, its none of our business. The law can also be applied to other regions as non indigenes must possess a pass mark in their indigenous language to gain admission.

You support this but you would not support disintegration so you could be like Germany and Russia? This is why Europeans are wiser than crazy Africans...All Germans speak german...Doing this will mean that the children will be put under pressure to study another language while they are in their presumed country?

Trash. Trash. Misplaced priority. I studied Yoruba language in junior school and always beat Yoruba students in my class. Today I can't speak the language because I am not interested. This law will achieve nothing. If a child has no interest he/she will not learn the language despite studying it in school.
