Thanks bro.
The problem is I'm not eligible for that just yet.
Then stay with your job o. UK post-study work has been cancelled, else I would have suggested exploring employment opportunities in the Uk after your studies. Tho traveling abroad for a postgraduate study used to increase job prospects, it's no longer an assurance for a job. A lot of UK MSc graduates are currently roaming the street of Naija without jobs.

If you must go, save some of your scholarship funds to start a PhD immediately. A PhD will at least guarantee you a lecturing position in Naija if you can't get a job in UK. Mind you, however, that at the moment, fresh PhD graduates (even from the moon) are absorbed into Lecturer II position in Nigerian tertiary institutions with a starting net salary of 136k ! So think am well, because your current earnings is way beyond waht you'll most likely earn after a PhD (speaking from experience)

Helo Nairalanders/Chevening Alumni,

Kindly advise:

Would you recommend that I quit my current N240k-paying job for a Chevening (UK Masters Degree) Scholarship slot?
Chevening alumni in the house, please advise and share your experiences during and post-study.

Please help me reach Nairalanders.
IMO

Go for Chevening.

Perform outstandingly and port to US/Canada for PhD.
You won't regret it.

Besides, your monthly Chevening allowance should be about twice/trice your current salary. Studying and earning without pressure.

Give it a proper thought.

I have my masters (grade 69% that's about 4.9 CGPA) but no Job yet. But I have have my hand work at least 180k per month.

Please do you Msc here in Naija , maintain your current Job , and pursue your Phd out side nija .
Ensure you graduate with a good PhD grade.

All chevening scholars are required to go back to their home country and contribute to its development after their masters. There is no escaping to anywhere.
very true. A lot of people do not know this.

Hi Op,

For you to get a 240k paying job in Nigeria if not luck that means you're a genius.
And for you to get the scholarship also makes you a double genius not to talk of the fact that its chevening.

My brother, trust me as smart as you are you will get a job before you finish. Think about the international link the scholarship will get you. Its so certain that you will even get to have other Prof cert.

Your company might even be willing to get you back after your school with better pay.

But, I mean but, if you dont take the offer and something happens in future to that Job.

lipsrsealed

I have realised that in life nothing is "cast in stone

I have gotten things that were thought mpossible. Rules can be bent in special situations.

Speak to your boss about the study leave. It may just work out.

continue with ur job and do ur masters here in Nigeria. dont waste ur opportunity. there are many PhD holders walking the street oo.
Many ? that's a very huge stretch! How many do you know for instance? with the increase in the number of tertiary institutions available, it is hard to think of a PhD holder out of work — unless he/ she is not interested in lecturing.

Don't you have a plan for your life. Everything depends in who you are and your networking skills. You are here asking people to tell you what they would do so you can get confused. Your problem is not knowing what to do but you are afraid of the consequences of your action. My friend take any step in line with your plan for your life and live with the consequence either good or bad
Re: Chevening Scholarship Or A N240k Job? by Nobody: 9:30pm On Feb 15, 2018
To all those saying you should quit your 240k job for a masters, well all I can say is I've quit a job for masters before and that is something I'd never do again. It's a very risky venture. No one can tell you what to do but also always think of the bad sides to every "opportunity". There is a possibility that you may finish your masters and not get a job in the UK or even a job in Nigeria especially as jobs are difficult to get in Nigeria and in the UK you may have immigration issues etc. But all in all for me, it was a risk worth taking and I'd do it again given what I know now. If you're really passionate about getting an advanced degree, I'd say go. However, like I said already because someone knows someone who went to UK for masters and is now at a better job working in Shell on Chevron doesn't mean everyone is that favored and there are not people that finished masters in UK and are looking for 120k job or even have no job. So you just think about that as well. Life is a risk.

PS: My masters was in the U.S. Internationals do struggle to get jobs and fulfill immigration requirements even right here in the U.S. If Chevening requires you back in Nigeria after completing the masters, then I'd say that you should only go if you get a study leave. 240k in Nigeria isn't easy to come by bro.

From the advice of an alumnus, I’ll say you should go for the
Scholarship.
1.) Like someone hinted, there are several organisations recruiting African talents for jobs in Africa through the CareersAfrica platform. Bosch, African Import Export Bank, Unilever, Nestle, etc Every year in London these recruitments happen. Just be on the lookout for this particular career fair.

2) From January 11th, the UK passed a law allowing international students on a tier 4 to stay back after their masters for Atleast aleast a year during which if they find a job, they can remain. This might apply from the incoming 2018/2019 set. This changes everything from before. Definitely puts the UK at par with countries like Canada etc that have similar timelines after visa expiry. It’s even better cos the UK has numerous jobs and many more to come with Brexit taking its toll.
thanks for t hi s info....I would advise d guy to go for that prestigous scholarship. He can even save more that 240k from his stipend if he spends wisely. atleast we all know what exchange rate is like

Going through the comments I can see that a lot of people are talking based on the "fear of the unknown factor". I will advise the OP to make the decision based on his/her circumstance. Most people see studying in the west as an escape route probably as a result of some hardship in Nigeria which is why they are making the assumption that you are going to the UK for greener pasture and as a result predicting that you'll return to Nigeria to struggle.

On my part I will tell you that the UK has some of the finest institutions in the world and if your sole aim of of taking up the opportunity is to gain knowledge I will encourage you to go for it. The exposure and network you'll gain cannot be bought with money. In 2012 I proceeded to the UK to attend graduate school with the sole aim of returning to Nigeria afterwards for NYSC and begin a career. Consequently, I didn't submit a single job application while in the UK till the end of my program in December 2014. When I returned to Nigeria people found it insane that I studied in USA + UK and decided to come back to a 30k a month job as a corper but it was my choice. Two years after NYSC I'm currently working/making headway and even rejected a 348k per month net job last month. Even at my current place of work people keep asking my why I came back to Nigeria instead of staying back in USA. And I always wonder why people see Nigeria as a place not befitting to be in and on the other hand see first world countries as the promise land. I spent the first 13 days of February 2018 holidaying in Chicago and London and I still in anyway couldn't see anything special among my peers who stayed back to work in US/UK. One of them was even calling me 'big boy' lol.

A good number of educated Nigerians are more likely to do well in Nigeria than any of those first world countries.
Thanks for this bit bro.

I will advise you to prayerfully settle for the choice you want.I know of SB who did his MSC in UK (Surrey), he came out with distinction,as i am typing now he doesn't have a good paying job.the funny thing is he came back to Nigeria in 2012.for 6 years now no good job, wife, house.I even tried helping him secure lecturing job in 3 federal universities, yet no show.I just concluded the guy has a serious spiritual problem.

Leo3333,

If the M.Sc program is inline with your work experience so far, i would advise you to go for it. Besides, being a Chevening scholar has it's perks.

efesodje:
I work in the industry so I speak from experience. Please take the Chevening scholarship. Before your graduation there are campus recruitment summits where companies like Shell, Schlumberger come to pick talents. You are 85% sure of getting a good job with the UK degree. While doing my Masters I knew a chevening scholar (same school), he got a job with Statoil on graduation. Please take the chevening scholarship. Don't think twice. Congrats cool

Trust me, I wouldn't put up this thread if I was eligible at this time for a study leave.

I'll nonetheless pray while pushing for a study leave. If declined I'll most likely take the risk of quitting.
Hmmmm, okay then.
