Garba is derived from Arabic name Abubakar, so Garba is not a Hausa traditional name.

Is there any arabic name or word like garba? granted Abubakar people called are called garba but that doesnt make it the same thing.

Baura is a hausa weapon a kind of kind of large knife similar to Barandami or Ngario. Baura was specifically used by yan Shanci- the knife fighters ( as described by Cyprian Ekwensi in his book - “Passport of Mallam Iliya”. It means that your family were in the shanci fight trade or used Baura as a weapon in ancient wars. Baura became the title of the district head of Dange in the old Sokoto Kingdom. Baura Dange, in a similar fashion to Yandoton Tsafe or Dankaden Tudun Wanda in Kano or Makaman Bakori in Katsina.

Shekara is of course the female of shekarau - given to a post term pregnancy. A baby whose pregnancy lasted longer the the usual 9 months.

Well your sincere opinion sounds like that of an im becile. You charlatans are intent on commenting on issues you have not the slightest clue about. Can you please explain what this personal observation is? So you said probably even after all the comments before that told you he's not just because it supports the divisive bile you wanted to spew. Even if you're not an easterner you might as well be.

If you're trying to contribute to a harmless discussion try not to make comments people might perceive as harmful, Dr.

You must be a bastard for repeatedly insulting a person who expressed his opinion on an issue, even after he stated he meant no harm, bad upbringing I must say.

Re: Real Hausa Native Names And Their Meanings by AnanseK(m): 7:13pm On Feb 24, 2018
DevdanSanguine:

Lol! It does actually. Ahmadu is a pretty common name and it's neither Hausa nor Fulani. Fulanis don't adopt Hausa surnames nor do Hausas adopt Fulani surnames. The fact that he was educated at that time even suggests further that he's Fulani because they being most the ruling class were the first to get educated in the north. Anywhere you see the name dikko or barkindo etc especially a surname then that's a Fulani man.

When it comes to first names all ethnicities adopt Hausa names especially minorities who I think use Hausa names more than hausas themselves.

Ahmadu is the same as Ahmad and is variant of Muhammadu or Mohammed, other variations include Mamman, Hamma, Modu.

Erase our culture? Why does every single imbe cile on naira land keep repeating this rubbish? Our culture is still very much intact. Culture is a way of life, our culture is very much different from all other Muslims bar the aspects of Islam except similarities with other sahelians like the fulanis as well. And what do you mean middle East myth?

Mind you I hold no sentiment towards fulanis and never will, history of hausas has always been one of migration and rebirth. E g how the abagayawas were overthrown by maguzawas and so on in Kano. Various sub groups have often come into Hausa land and dominated even before the fulanis, only difference is the fulanis somewhat united the hausas states who have never been truly cointegrated.

And can you stop it with this nonsense? Dikko is a Fulani surname. Dikko is a Fulani man, stop it. Period. Why do you barmy lot keep telling us about our own people? A Hausa man tells you he's fulani, a Fulani man tells you he's Fulani, but you're neither and you know better than us yeah?

Just checked your posts to confirm you're a south easterner who apparently created his account solely to bash fulanis. If I had seen this earlier I would have definitely not bothered to write all of that. Mark me, I have completely given up on you lot.
Allah maka albarka brother, I created a thread this afternoon to address this their ignorance and hypocrisy. A people who literally worship Whiteman are the ones trying hard to tell a Hausaman he has no culture.

DanZubair:
Hausa people in parts of Niger Republic, Northern Nigeria, Sudan, Ghana and others are known with fond of representing names of prophets and prophets companions, then their particular native names as backup, making it second or third names. This traditional naming is more privalent to the ruralship or township Hausas, in exemption to their urbanised counterparts which some take as being gravely unletterd, not knowing that numbers of the names they are contemplating to be of Arabian origin are not Arabic. Names like Nuhu (Noah), Ibrahim(Abraham), Idris(Enoch), Dauda, Dawud
(David), Imran, Isah(Jesus), Samu(Samuel), Hana(Hannah), Yunusa(Jonah) e.t.c are not Arabic names and they don’t have meanings in Arabic language; The present Arabians describe the names by saying name of such prophet of God, but in Hausa, numbers have meanings, being that Hausa is one of ancient african civilisations that dwelled in the Middle East in those days, according to hausa analysts.

Hausa native names are given to new born children or people after their birth, situations surrounding their birth, their numbers in a family and peoples roles in a society after they had grown-up. In hausa culture, the names are referred to as grandparents names “Sunayen kakanni” who are always the leaders in every hausa family. Any hausa speaker can grasp meaning of the names by mention, because they have deep hausa language roots and showcased hausa way of life. The names are still being maintained by various Hausa subgroups like; Gobirawas, Tagamawas, Adarawas, Kurfayawas, Cidarawas, Arawas, Daurawas, Kanawas, Kabawas, Katsinawas, Ranawas, Hadejawas, Zazzagawas, Zamfarawas e.t.c

Those who are ambassadors of their families, villages, towns and states add its name in their names e.g Bashir Adamu Gobir, Abubakar Ibrahim Gobir, Aminu Yahayya Sokoto, Nuhu Gobir, Alhaji Adam Rano, Bashir Abubakar Katsina, Malam Kabiru Daura, e.t.c

I beg to disagree with your generation that '' Anyone with a surname dikko is definitely not a Hausa man.'' My reason, I know many people who bear names like Bako, Tani, Barau, etc which are definitely & etymologically Hausa names, yet these people have no affinity with any hausa person. Likewise the name dikko could also be found among persons who are not Fulani, eventhough it could be originally Fulani name. In fact, my paternal grand-uncle bore this name, but our origin has nothing to do with neither Fulani nor hausa. So, names can be particular, but not peculiar.

Go back and read the rest of the debate. Hausas do not adopt Fulani surnames nor do fulanis adopt Hausa surnames. As for the names you mentioned, like I said, minorities use Hausa first names more than hausas themselves. A person with a surname dikko can never be hausa. Like the chances aren't slim but zero.
