I'm really surprised that some folks still believed that removing car thermostat makes it work better. Pls we all have internet. Do you know that an engine running at a very low temperature(below 70 degrees) is running badly and consumes lots of fuel?? Pls whatever car you are using, check your manual or Internet and find out the best operating temperature of your engine. Most engine run best between 75-90 degrees. And this is what most Nigeria call overheating. Removing your thermostat kills your engine faster than you think and your engine consumes lots of fuel when thermostat I removed. Thermostat have nothing to do with weather or region. Every car engine has its own optimum temperature and that's what the thermostat regulates. If your car overheats and thermostat is the problem, change it, don't remove it completely. 6 Likes |

Hmmmm...... Sooo true...you can bring the horse to the water but you can't make him drink it..Op is taking time to educate us on the importance and purpose of the thermostat...but... too many of us prefer to remain ignorant. No doubt.... there are variations in cars depending on the targeted region and climate is a consideration.... but regardless of region..... hot or cold... all combustible engine cars have thermostats. You have to be a fool to believe that to date... none of the car companies have realised thermostats are not necessary in hot climes....a fool to believe the mechanic... uncertified untrained mechanic over the people who design , test and manufacture the engines. These mechanics are no different that doctors who say the appendix is useless...serves no purpose. |

Thermostats could be useful in temperate oyibo climate, but the scorching African climate may not need it.. |

adecz: 1. The temperature in 'oyibo climate mimics African climate' for three months every year 2. Engines run around 90 degrees C which is twice as hot as the hottest ambient temperature in Nigeria 3. A Thermostat's role is to ensure the temperature of the running engine is constant for optimal performance. Any less and there will be noticeable problems like described in the original post. 4. If your car is overheating, the thermostat needs replacement not removal 5. You should have paid attention in Integrated Science class 8 Likes |

Monaco2: Kai. Nigerians are unbelievably daft. So Hakeem and Wasiu know better than the German or Japanese engineer. Without a thermostat you're adding unnecessary load to your engine because your fans will always be spinning, equally wearing out the motor. And your fuel consumption adds up. It also throws a MIL on your dash. Fantastically stupid people. 5 Likes |

Even cars in Dubai have thermostat. It's a censor that regulates the flow of coolant into the engine based on the temperature. 1 Like |

I just replaced my thermostat back to my corolla 2006....guess it was removed by d former owner....I noticed high fuel consumption(cos my brother drive d same kind of car wt far less fuel consumption).... Took d car for diagnosis to know d cause of geometric fuel consumption.. D machine deceted thermostat...so I just installed d thermostat back into d car yestadey...headed back to d filling station, fill up my thank, reset d trip A odometer reading to zero to monitor distance covered...... Need I say dis ,b4 d thermostat installation, my full tank covers 240 mile or km,I can't really tell d unit...but mph is d outer calibration while kmh is d inner calibration of d speedometer.... So I want to see hw much distance it will cover after installing d thermostat while constantly keeping both eyes on d temperature gauge....so far so gud since yestadey after installing the thermostat,d temperature gauge has been at d middle.... 3 Likes |

Monaco2: Another thing nigerians are known for: Thin skins. Why anyone would bristle at internet insults is beyond me. And in a country where people believe the local fauna gobbles millions, the people believe in witchcraft, charms, pastors and prophets, transmutation, ghosts, spirits....etc. what are such people if not fantastically stupid? 2 Likes |

It may not be good to remove thermostat from an engine but when your car won't give you peace of mind because of overheating, you gotta remove the thermostat. If you haven't experienced overheating on several occasion, you won't understand. You can imagine being in a small traffic and you are getting scared that your car doesn't overheat, especially at night. the embarrassment, the time wasting, the risk at night. Men if you have to remove the thermostat for you to never experience overheating, remove it. if the engine develops another fault, fix it. So many cars are in naija running without thermostat and they are running fine. 3 Likes |

ow11: With an ambient temp of 40 deg centigrade, it takes less to no time for an engine to reach 90 deg. So for Nigeria humid and hot climate, thermostat is unnecessary and the fan needs to blow continously to maintain engine at the designed 90 degrees centigrade. The proof is that cars are running successfully even for a decade without the thermostat and without any engine problem whatsoever. |

This has become another major concern, please I need a competent electric Ford mechanic |
