A golf 3 1999 model. Yes; the mechanic took out the thermostat and that was the end of the problem.

After taking of the thermostat some mechanics might also suggest you get a bigger cooling fan. That helps too.

Wrong in the absence of a cooling system engineer... please remove the freaking thermostat until you meet one. Don't ruin your car. Thermostats are important no doubt but your engine's life is more important

Too cool engine causes sludge as well.
