Justanodadude: Selling that car without telling the buyer the minor crash on the history is fraud. When you disclose the history to buyers and they still willing to buy, then no issue. For the VIN check, i dont have idea. Ask ipfreely, cosplay, computerglobal 7 Likes 1 Share |

dingbang:Wrong thread for this Sir. Go through the section and you'll come across threads by various parties offering various vehicles in various conditions. Just do your due diligence, never assume dealers or sellers would be honest and upfront with you about vehicles, which would make you alert to the tricks and mind games the dealers play, and you'll be alright. 5 Likes |

Explorers: There are a number of ways to obtain information about 'tokunbo' vehicles put up for sale in this section and on this forum, including some quite unconventional ways. It would be a really long read to attempt to explain all of these individually. The most important and the most useful is a VIN report. There are various types of VIN reports as well, the most reliable is a CARFAX report. It contains almost every imaginable detail about a vehicle history. The other types, including autocheck, provide a basic background for the vehicle, while other categories also delve into recalls and other general information. If you come across a vehicle you're interested In on this forum, the very first thing you should do is check the advert for telltale signs or red flags. These may sometimes just be accidental omissions, but very often are deliberately left out. Incomplete photos of the vehicle. Seller includes photos of the engine bay OR the rear OR the front, etc, and leaves out other important areas. Example: https://www.nairaland.com/4374861/toks-2012-highlander-fullest-option https://www.nairaland.com/4370580/toks-honda-pilot-2004-2.5m Will break this post down into several parts. 4 Likes 3 Shares |

Sellers may also post one photo and leave a number to be contacted via whatsapp. This just makes no sense. What legit seller would prefer the more stressful route to display their merchandise? Let's be logical, wouldn't any genuine businessperson choose the easiest route to let clients see their products, would you open a shop in a market, then leave it empty with just a phone number on the door and ask clients to call You? 11 Likes |

There are a number of other POTENTIAL red flags, but perhaps the most blatant, raging-bull matador red flag of them all is the deliberate absence of VIN on a 'tokunbo' vehicle advert. Close to 100% of these dubious and very dishonest sellers in the autos section would never display a VIN, and most of them, even when reminded, would respond very negatively and aggressively. Examples. https://www.nairaland.com/4353427/2010-toyota-corolla-toks-2.7 https://www.nairaland.com/4353188/2011-camry-sale-tokubo I could literally go on and on with the examples, I encourage you to go through my posts and those of other concerned individuals here e.g. cosplay, obekediamondfuto and the rest. 7 Likes |

When you come across a vehicle you're interested In and you ask the seller for the VIN, note his(OR her) reaction. If any seller declines to provide the VIN at all, please do yourself a favour and move on. If the seller insists on your physical presence at the vehicle location to get the VIN, and it's a convenient time and a safe location for You, then visit. As soon as you see the vehicle, locate the vin, do a brief inspection, then run a vin search. You can contact computerglobal via 08060365068, he provides any of the categories of reports depending on your budget and details you have in mind. For a complete and thorough vehicle history, request a Carfax report. 6 Likes 1 Share

You should proceed with any vehicle only after you're satisfied with the carfax findings. Inasmuch as tokunbo vehicles are supposedly in good condition, if you're not auto savvy and have little experience you should go with someone you rely on and who has some experience to spot the signs. RUST, the telling scent of moisture from the air vents of a flooded vehicle OR over the top air freshers to mask scents, lack of symmetry in body lines, mismatched headlamps, the list is endless. 11 Likes 1 Share |

Truth is that these dealers have perfected the art of bad deals, packaging and delivering defective goods in lieu of clean vehicles, and sometimes despite best efforts, they may pull one over on you. But with DUE DILIGENCE, those odds diminish. OR you could go another route and have one of the SEEMING trustworthy pre-order agents here handle your business, depending on your impression after researching their pedigree. In that case, you get to choose the vehicles you want so you know their entire history from start till they're in your possession. This may be more expensive, but certainly worth it for the discerning individual. 3 Likes |

Explorers: I want to commend everyone who has contributed positively on this thread. A stitch in time saves nine, however if you expect this on the front page, you are on a long thing. The Auto section is plagued with all kinds of maladies and it did not start today or this year. Half truths, false documentation, fraudulent adverts, fake customs documents, and shifty characters abound. I stopped posting here when it became a process of banging your head on a brick wall and I wouldn't have known of this thread if a poster hadn't tagged my moniker. The government has banned the importation of vehicles through the land borders and the customs have closed down all vehicle seats at the borders yet on this section we still find dealers advertising vehicles from Coutonu through Idi Iroko and Seme borders boldly. These vehicles can NEVER have genuine documents, yet people patronize these dealers probably out of ignorance or probably due to trying to cut corners. I hope you guys can keep this up. All fraudsters on this section should be named and shamed. Cc ifyalways. 28 Likes 4 Shares |

Ipfreely: Just checked and saw a whooping 360,000 miles deducted from the mileage account of this Highlander leaving a paltry balance of 13,000 miles claiming the car is almost brand new! I am for full disclosure. But the buyer should not stop at that. Personally I will still conduct due diligence to save myself from an impending disaster. Another case to consider is the situation where 2 or 3 'dealers' or agents are advertising the same car or are they an unholy trinity? 14 Likes |
