Sirs, 1. How can one train his eyes to spot a clear buying opportunity in a month when there is no general bull? 2. How do you calculate/estimate fair price of a stock? the formula (discounted cash flow method) I saw is so confusing. CC: fxuser, currentprice & onegentleguy. Is it possible to have a new thread or time out for newbies/oldmen cos I think some of our questions are so offtrack that the elders in the house ignore. Or refer us to the schools or books you use. I appreciate your help |

However, this is just the beginning of the journey !! ...for though there shall be some obstacles from the class of men with the itchy fingers to sell ealier than necessary, we shall continue to move forward in the short to mid term. To those who hastened to the call of the REVELATION to Flour their Mills @ btw N29-30 and join the United Army of Complete Nollywood @ btw N15.6-15.8, my sincere advise is HOLD !! #BELIEVEE #ANDKEEPBELIEVING |

tritritri:Buy back tomorrow. No shame in the market. I sold Diamond bank at N1.50 sometime back. It started moving, I came back in at N1.97, rode to N2.50 and exited again. As regards the market, I have refused to ever stay back and wish people bad luck by wishing the price to hit the rocks. In these days of fuel scarcity, I join any healthy vehicle leaving the park. For the fact that you wrote this down, I can assure you that YOUR MARKET MIND is signaling RE-ENTER. it's better you listen now. At the point of selling, you took the best decision available at that moment. That moment is now in the past. What is the present telling you? Take a stand based on the present scenario. Best of luck. |

swilo:My dear, I use a combination of a lot of factors to determine the fair price of any coy I wish to key into. ...and after that, I wait patiently for the right time before buying !! For even an adjudged discount from the fair price of a stock could translate to a wrong trade, if u key in at the wrong time. That said, the complexities of the NSE market terrain requires u to 'always use ur sixth sense'. To be better off, u also do need to add the Psychological and Information based technique to ur knowledge of fundamental and technical analysis, especially in this clime. I'll recommend the following investment books; The Intelligent Investor- by Benjamin Graham. Security analysis- by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd. Irrational exuberance- by Robert J. Shiller. Common stocks and uncommon profits- by Phillip A. Fisher. Come into my trading room- by Alexander Elder. and The little book that still beats the market- by Joel Greenblatt. There are others, but the aforementioned 6 books above will surely help u start off on a very good footing. Goodluck to u my dear !! |

Yayira:FBNH? Fan of Analysts Opinions? Then read below... -------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Big or Go Home!!! And yes, I guess I am sticking my neck out on this one. My high conviction call today going way into 2019 is FBN Holdings. This is probably the most anticipated turnaround story in our coverage of banks. FBNH might not offer anything significant from a dividend perspective though – but patient capital for 2 years could give significant capital appreciation. This is a follow on email to an initial email below on November 13, 2017 titled **Views of a Sales Man** If you have patient capital – this mail is for you, otherwise ignore where we talked about FBN Holdings Plc Let me be clear – I am not saying the quality of earnings for FBNH is in the same class as a GTBank or Zenith Bank , but when I think about the stock from a valuation upside perspective, I strongly believe this is my Alpha play on a 2 year basis and I would happily play it PA optimistically. I could only do this by dimensioning my risk and downside potentials that exist if things do not play out the way I expect but something has got to give. FBNH NPLs are specific to them FBNH high NPLs are not systemic (meaning because they have 20% in NPLs, it is not necessarily a read across for the entire sector). Diamond Bank comes in 2nd in our coverage universe with NPLs closer to 10% (but this is also legacy issues) and Stanbic IBTC at 7.2% as at 9M (overly conservative when it comes to booking NPLs). Taking a peep at Access bank’s loan book, clients would flag the relatively low NPL number being an outlier in a rising NPL environment. Let me take your mind back to the fact that Access Bank refused to lend to the oil and gas space during the rounds of the Shell divestments because of the lofty valuation piled itself into the $2.5bn derivative trade with the Sovereign instead and zero exposure to the power sector. These, probably explain why NPL levels are an outliers however we are not speaking about Access Bank today. The loans that make up the bulk of FBNH NPLs are concentrated in 4/5 large ticket transactions. Let’s imagine a scenario where FBN Holdings can resolve 2 out of 6 large ticket NPLs – the impact of such a resolution will be material upside to their numbers. The level of provisioning you see FBNH taking is not something you see every day – we are talking NGN350bn between 2015 and 2016. For FY2017, we are expecting they close the year with NGN145billion of provisioning by our numbers. Put that into perspective, we are talking NGN8 – NGN10bn of provisioning monthly – that my friend is a lot of money where I come from, I don’t know about you. Management guides that it can get its NPL below 10% by 2019. We have taken a conservative stance that NPLs will be at 15% by 2019 and 10% by 2020. Painful cycle – YES, but we are taking a long view that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Positive sentiments about the Management team at the Bank level – First Bank of Nigeria From our conversations with local money managers, we get more positive feelers with the caliber of talents which the bank has been able to attract in recent years. Some of the names that come up in our conversations are Remi Oni, Patrick Iyamabo, Olusegun Alebiosu, Ini Ebong and Tosin Adewuyi. I felt I had made a convincing case to a client who was quick to sing to me a song by Sunshine Anderson – ‘’Heard it all before, all of your sweet talk, so I had to shut you down.’’ So I guess the onus falls on Management to prove the market wrong this time around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclosure: I don't think much of these types of opinions myself but I read them nevertheless. |

tritritri:Nuggets I have picked up this year from "Reminiscence of a stock market operator". I validate it for my self having sold Dangote Flour and May+Baker way too early last year. 1. Be hopeful when prices are rising and be fearful when they are falling. Most people have those emotions in reverse. 2. You can never catch the prices at the absolute top or bottom so just follow the market. If you have a grip of general market conditions, sell after a few consecutive days of share price drop from a high and buy after a few consecutive days of share price rise from bottom. Stop trying to catch the market at the absolute top or rock bottom. You can't do it. 3. When you discover you have sold too early like you will discover shortly in the case of flour mill, remember you have two options - Re-enter if indications are that the prices will continue to rise - Forget the trade and move on to other opportunities right before you. You may pick up the book and read. |
